Default Futaba 14MZ discussion.

Ok, even though I may be chastized by some for doing this, here is a thread for discussion about the 14MZ.
Please give experiences with this radio. This thread will be heavily watched and moderated if needed. IF there is a problem I agree it should be discussed, if however there is ANY bashing, speculation, slander or otherwise it will be editted and or closed immediately. As a jet pilot I know we are always looking for the most channels possible so I think this radio very much pertains to Jet activity. I would like to hear from real life experiences, NOT "this happened to my buddy" BS. If it happened to your buddy have them come post about it. If you have had a problem and Futaba gave a solution or did a repair tell us, if you have documents (bills) showing repairs done or otherwise it would be wise to post those.
This is a sensitive subject right now so lets be careful about it. There will be no hesitation to close this if it gets out of hand. I know there are people who are flying this radio and receiver without an issue so I would like to see them post as well.
Thank you for your co-operation.

I'vebeen using the 14 Mz for the last six months now with over 75 flights on my Kincat using 12 channels. Also several flights on a Tam F18, about 100 flights on a Boomerang, a dozen helipcopter flights on T-rexx and I'm sure there were a few others I can't remember right now. All the flights were fine, except pilot errors here and there. It took a little while to get use to switching channels, but I seem to have that procedure down now. This is great when there are three or four other guys on your channel and your wife only gave you a two hour window to go fly in.

Mixing channels and seting up planes on the 14 Mz has been easy and without any surprises. I have not used the picture or mp3 player portion of the radio yet and probably never will. Its a transmitter and if I wanted to listen to music I have an Ipod for that. So far the only problem I have had with it is every once in a while when I turn on the unit, I get an error message and have to shut it down and restart it. Also the shut down and restart sequence takes a long time. I would hate to have to shut it down and turn it back on during a flight due to lockout or needing to reset the radio for what ever reason. I wish the battery was larger so that I could fly all day long. I usually take two battery packs with me when I go out for a full day of flying. Oh, one of my battery chargers fails to charge the pack any more, thankfully I have a spare charger.

Other then what I have said already, I have been very happy with the radio so far.

So far so good . I do really like the audio reminders when I make a switch selection . The manual isn't great and some of the programming isn't as user friendly as my 9c .

One thing I've run into just recently is setting up tailerons on my SU 27 . If I use the taileron mix it's fine but I can't use CH 5 for anything else because it still has to be assigned to an ailereon . I'm effectively wasting a channel . If I use the flying wing set-up ( like I should be able to ) I can't adjust the elevator throws independently ! It would be great if Futaba listened to it's users !

Hi All
I have been using the 14MZ since April '05. So far have logged over 200 flights in 11 airframes. Have even used the new Rx in my turbine model and not experienced any hint of a problem whatsoever. Have managed to set up all the airframes quickly and without difficulty. Overall extremely pleased and IMHO it is worth the money just for peace of mind that it is so rock solid. Don't be swayed with the 'guff' you might read about issues with this radio. If there were a problem I think I might have experienced it by now.

Cheers

I have had mine for about two months flying it in 2 jets have about 50 flights not a single problem. The only thing I found out is that when you use the transmitter with a pcm 9 channel receiver you need to move the servos from their original channel to the new layout of the 14mz where ailerons are no longer on channels 1 and 6 they have to be moved to channel 5 and 6 if not failsafe will not work properly.

To the above people listing they've had no problems,
Are you using the standard receiver wire length, or the shortened length (assuming you're using the new 14 ch receivers?

I'm about to setup my F-15 on my new 14mz, and with you guys having so many flights under your belts I'd be curious to hear which length you've had your successes with.

Thanks,
Lance

Lance,

I've used mine with the 14ch Rx set at the standard length with over 150 flights on various planes and no problems (all turbines). Also the Tam F 18 was setup with a whip antenna with no problems, but she has only had a dozen flights at best so far. The baby Boomerang was setup with a Deans antenna with about a 100 flights or so with no problems also. Last, used a Deans antenna on a turbine jetcopter by a friend of mine with about 20 or so flights with no problems also. I hope this helps.

Where did I say that? I said I wanted open discussion about this radio and if there is an issue lets hear about it. Stay within the rules and all will be fine, Bashing, Slander, Speculation will not be tolerated, is that so unfair? I put this post up to have the discussion that obviously needs to happen regarding this radio. Personally it makes no difference to me if people love or hate this radio, discuss it however you want but stay within the rules, plain and simple.

By the way, according to your profile, you're from Canada, so am I, the USA is that big country just south of us

I have had no problem with my 14MZ yet. Mind you I have not flown with it but have been switching planes to it. It is by far the easiest radio I have ever used. I ran out of channels on the 9 channel receiver for the A321 and as such switched to the 14 channel Rx. Really works great. Need to fly now I guess no more excuses.

Hi Guys

I have to tell U I have used it for either 6 or 8 months now.
The Radio itself is a very nice machine there have been several software updates to make what Sung spoke about no longer occur.

The 5014 receiver as far as speed make u feel like ur flying with a delay using any other receiver. This effect is most noticeable when U switch receiver's.

My biggest complaint has to do with Noise the receiver seems to be extremely sensitive.

Presently I am outfitting a new Gas project and I will not use the 5014 due to the Noise issue.

I feel extremely confident using the 5014 in any 2 stoke or 4 stroke Glow Fuel Motor.

Doesn't your gasser fall into the "2 stroke or 4 stroke" category ? I'm not trying to be facetious here, I'm just trying to understand what the deliniating factor really is for your decision as to where you feel comfortable using the RX. Vibration related noise with the larger engine ? Ignition noise ?

Cheers,
Gordon

Really glad to see that a fully dedicated thread has been started on the 14mz!! This is just what the new 14MZ owners needed

I recently bought one myself and have been working with the radio quite a bit & getting myself familar with it.I can't wait to make the full switch over from my 9C .However I will be using it strictly with 9 channel 149's for awhile until I fully test the 501DPS for a few months in a prop plane.

I am making the shift over to the 14MZ in my KingCat in the next couple weeks and my SM F-5 and new SM F-18F will also be on the 14MZ as well.Altho again all on 149 rcvrs for awhile until i feel 100% secure with the 501DPS after many many flights in a prop plane.

Myself and a few others I know, wont use the receiver with a gas plane because there is usually more noise generated with the ignition, etc.... and thats why most arent confident enough to risk a gas plane. I have the receiver with the antenna already trimmed at the factory, but will await some kind of solution, or an explanation far beyond what has already been given before I will trust the receiver in a gasser. I dont doubt the receiver is great, but I cant tell how much"noise" my plane will generate, and wont risk the plane.
The receiver is very sensitive to noise........and I believe thats its only fault right now.........

I just recently bought my 14MZ. Does anyone know when the software was updated for it? I have had it for about one month and have not used the 5014 receiver yet. Does the newer ones already have the receiver wire shortened? How long should it be? Are you using RF filters with this receiver?

Some are using RF filters without incedent. The updates are on the 14MZ site, but until they put you in the system, you cant access the site. You will be registered when they receive the included paper that came with the radio, or sometime thereafter.
Go to Futabas home page, and go to the 14MZ, and it has a link to the 14MZ site.
