Default possible newby looking for guidance

hello everyone,
I am looking into getting a rtf or used turbine jet that can be flown from short grass.
I am not looking for a real awesome performer, but something that I wont outgrow right away.

My questions are.
1. is there any reputable places where I could look to get one rtf used?
2. what turbine and airframe brand and models should I be looking for? I dont want to stir anything up here, I am just looking for a low maintenance starter model that isnt to advanced. (hope this makes sense)

best bet would be a Boomerang intro ARF ... flies like a 60 sized trainer. Check out the classifieds here on RCU, one or 2 seem to pop up every once in a while for sale ..

Boomerang Intro with a JetCat P60. Low cost and loads of fun. No need for high cost digital servos either! You can't break it flying it.

Look into new stuff. Much "snake oil" for sale if you're not careful. Should be able to get it for less than $4,000USD with all new stuff providing you have a TX and PCM RX.

if you can, i'd skip a P60, and go for a p70 ... it will serve you better if you chose to use it in a different plane down the line .. also, consider a Jet Central Bee instead of the P60. More thrust, cooler temps, and a lot lower fuel consumption meaning longer flights ..

First get just the plane (Boomerang Intro.) and take your time getting every thing else.

1. Boomerang $734 shipped
2. Jr. servos 125 oz. $32.00 each
3. Dubro 50 oz. tank $14.00
4. Bvm UAT tank $60.00
5. Fuel tubing $12.00
6. Expert wiring $30.00
7. Sullivan fuel tank 16 oz $5.00
8. Bvm Heat paint $10.00
9. Robart 510/521 Tower hobby air up/spring down retract's $139.00 wire struts.
10. Get a use turbine with less hours(PST 600r, FTE 500 or P60) Some just pop up on Rcuniverse for around $1,300. You will have to shop around for deals but first get the plane and then you'r in the game.
11. One more thing, you don't have to get brakes for right now if you'r using grass field.
12. PCM RX $100.00
13. Keep your eye on www.nitrplanes.com Bobcat for $169.00 (new shipment) and you can convert it over to a turbine, some of the guy's and my self have them.
14. Go to the car section of you'r hobby store and get the antenna set up for $3.50 (look at photo's) so you want have to cut you'r antenna.

awesome G-rookie

thanks,
after all the planes and helicopters i am ready for something new.

now i guess i need to educate myself on turbines a bit more. IE: whats good, what to stay away from, what to look for, and lastly how to run and maintain them.

Dead wrong on point #11. AMA REQUIRES brake(s) on all turbine powered aircraft...grass strips or not. Time to bone up on the rules?

The baby Boomerang (real name Boomerang Intro) is a superb choice.

Check out the threads for the best turbine - opinions vary! I have a P60 on mine and for a beginner it is a super combination but a P70 or P80 will work.

Be warned......it will not cost you $4000 .........it will cost a hell of a lot more because you will buy more jets!!

I got the boomerang 18 months ago, I'm finishing a Eurosport and am about to order a CARF Flash ---mucho dinero (OH and I crashed my first boomer - no fault of the plane --- I foolishly listened to bad advice).

There are some good threads on the boomerang, suggest you read them!

one other question,

how much space is needed for a mild powered turbine?

how large of a flyinf field?

Roughly 350 acres (0.5 miles) square. Look for a field in your area with a decent sized runway, grass or paved, with some other jet modelers would be ideal.

350 acres? that much? even for something like a dreamworks a-10x??

I have two fields that are local. one is 30-35 acres and the other is 10-90 acres.

I mean is i dont run it full blast all the time do i still need somewhere in the nieghborhood of 350 acres.

wow, i may be in trouble.

And what is beyond those 30-90 acres, houses, trees or more open field?

Let see, 100 acres is about 0.15 miles or 792 feet wide measured in one direction. There are club fields that have 800ft runways specifically made this long for jet flyers. An A-10X is a small plane, grant it, but you's still want at least a 500 ft paved runway to feel comfortable landing instead of trying to make the perfect landing every time on a short one. Grass is a different story.

I have a Rookie II and I need every bit of the 600 ft runway for landing and roll-out without screwing up the wingtips during braking.

you dont really need retracts... having them just cleans the plane up in the air .. mostly visually, and is a slight decrease on drag ...

yes

1: throttle
2: ailerons
3: elevator
4: rudder
5: flaps
6: nose wheel steering ( you can also save a channel by saving a y or a reversed Y off of the rudder channel)
7: brakes

Larry,
Stop down sometime. http://www.flyingpilgrims.com/

Our site is about 40 acres with a 380 ft. paved runway. Beyond that is farmland which we fly over. There are about a dozen members who frequently fly turbines there. There are times, depending on the plane, when it would be nice to have another 100 - 200 feet of runway but it's
not a problem for a turbine trainer type plane like the Baby Boomerang.

There are 4 Baby Boomerangs in the club that get regularly flown there. Other turbine powered planes that have regularly flown there are full sized Boomerang, Boomerang XL, KingKat, Enforcer, Cyclone, Bandit, Yellow F-15, SM Gripen, Rookie, and Kangaroo.

joe, i would love to stop by when there is a jet or two flying.

I would just need to know when someone would be there.

If anyone on here has somewhat of a schedule of flying at pilgrim and reads this, please post a date and time.

I am real close to ordering a boomerang.

Larry,
Normally any Saturday or Sunday when the weather is nice would work. This time of year it's hard to predict. I'll be out of town this weekend so I won't be there. Perhaps you could check back with me later next week.

Joe
