Default Nitro engine with ducted fan in a car.

Hi
I am designing and working on a home-made Rc car. It will be very streamlined and aerodynamic car. A car like the land speed record cars:

I am making this machine cause i want to make a really fast rc car , at the same time , has the feel of a jet-car.
The car will be like 1 meter long , and the chassis will wight like , 1 - 2 kilos (depends on what material i use)
The car was meant to be powered by a big brushless motor with a ducted fan but i found out that if i really want some power i needed to buy the hacker motors but this will be very expensive.
so i though , maybe i could use a ducted fan installed on a Nitro engine. i checked on Ebay and they are not that bad i price , but the problem is that i really dont know how big motor i need to pull this car to a good speed.

I found this , how do you think it would perform ? i wonder how many hp i need to push the car.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...DME:L:RTQ:US:1

i would really appreciate some help from people who knows these motors.
if someone could link me to some strong enough motors it would be great!
and , if someone has an engine with/without a ducted fan i can use , send me a pm[8D]
best regards
Jan

Have you seen the Ducted fan Batmobile this guy made?

You may want to step up to a .46 size engine and a turbax fan unit. You can get them from Jet Hangar Hobbies. That should really make a car of that size go fast.
Or, you could always find a good used turbine, maybe a ram 500 or similar. That would be really cool. I've seen a few 500's go for about $1000 recently.

thanx for the link SJN that car is very similar to the one im making. cool to see other project like this.
hmm that car uses a 0.25 motor , looks like it pushes a little hard in the corners but builds up speed pretty good , hard to tell how much it weights.

i am trying to find the engine i will use , used. im looking much at ebay and i have a problem , i actually don't know what these nitro ducted fan engines is named.
i searched on ebay Randy M. , for the OS Max .46 and its lots of the motor there , but as good as i know , all these motors are not made for ducted fans but props too ?
take a look yourself ---> http://search.ebay.com/search/search...e=search&fgtp=
(what a long link[:'(] )

i try to search every thing between : glow , fan , ducted , but not much luck. is it something i do wrong ? is it called something else or is it just a few glow ducted fan engines at ebay right now ?

I don't know if you noticed, but the Batmobile has the Engine powering the rear wheels directly through a belt and pulley(the spinner), so it is not being propelled only by the fan, if it actually is....

thats the problem cause i want to search on ebay for used motors , but i don't find anything cause i think i write wrong when i try to find the engines

Thanx for the offer Ruizmilton!
but i am looking for a more powerful motor , .40 and up cause this car will be quite big.

if others have bigger motors to sell , just let me know

what is the max weight a .45 dk engine can lift a airplane or jet ? and what speed do you guys get before it lifts of the ground?

if you mess with 48 size even on the cheap its gona cost more than a EDF I think. I know unitedhobbies.com has some alright EDF's and motors for fairly cheap. not the greatest stuff but plenty fine for this kind of messing around. anything around 3 inch is gonna put out as much as a 25 type fan too except with more efflux.

im afraid those motors at the site is too small. the car be quite heavy so i need bigger motors. im still looking for used brushless motors on ebay .
i look most for hacker motors like c50 , plettenberg motors and lehner motors , the more big ones.
do i get a great price on a brushless ducted fan system , i`ll buy it

by the way , do you guys know what material the chassis on the Batmobile is ? has he soldered it together ?

The frame is just k&S brass tubing soldered together. Not the lightest but it works.

look at the quantum motors on there, they are B-50 sized and in the 1000kv range will run a turbax even, if you stick one in the 4 inch fans it will run on less cells. To save you some hunting you wont need to get a C-50 motor, B-50 is same thing without fins and thats what you need to fit it in all the fans that are out there. And lehner are not ideal big fan motors due to just 2 poles, they dont have as much torque as the 4 pole and up motors that are now available. They were great motors when nothing else could take the voltage but now theres much beter for 1/4 the price. Pending on the size of car your shooting for, another cheap combo is the byron fan with a Hacker A-50 14S 10 pole outrunner, does about 2800 watts with just 69 amps and will give you about 12 pounds of thrust but it is a 6 inch fan.

wow thanx for the info Barry!
2800w ! , thats interesting that should be a blast.
can you give me some more info on this system ? this is what im looking for if its not too expensive
what could the total cost be with ducted fan , motor and esc ?
and what type of aircraft uses this setup ?
i actually need to know how much circa the plane or jets weight who uses this setup , then i can find out if this motor is alright for the project.
is this the motor ? : http://cgi.ebay.com/Hacker-A50-10S-n...QQcmdZViewItem

also , im not going to start making the chassis before i have found the motor and fan i`ll use , so i only have ideas how i can make it now , but i liked the way the chassis on the batmobile was , but it`s not light ? do you guys have other ideas of light weight tubing i can use for soldering ?

im so glad you guys help me!
without you , this project would have been far behind
thank you!

janmaxx,
The bat mobile is almost 3' long and the frame weighs 3/4 of a pound, so it is not that bad, plus brass is easy to solder and work with.
Or you could make the frame out of carbon fiber.

its just a byron fan, find it cheap on ebay, a Hacker A-50S 10 pole Heli Motor, and Electric Jet Factory.com sells the mount for the motor into it.

can i ask what tires i should use for minimal resistance here ?
either rc car on-road type of tires or the tires and rims you guys have on the jet`s. what should be the best ? im most looking for rc tires , but im looking for thin tires right`? not wide ones..
let me know

also , the front will be a 2 tire front steering , same as the rc cars. do you agree that i need a slow steering servo cause , if its too fast it will be hard to control the car in high speeds unless its going straight forward.

slow servos either mechnicly adjust or program in TX for wheels somthin like this could work

http://www.jettengineering.com/

Go to : "Mufflers & Accessories" then scroll down till you see "Racing Wheels "

These should be awsome... very thin

if you were me guys and had 350 bucks max to buy a ducted fan system , would you go nitro or electric then ?

i just saw a oz.91 motor with fan and pipe went for 300 dollars here. that motor would be fairly strong enough for this project.

im just looking for what YOU would do
thanks
