Think you might be struggling with this one, not a lot on the net. Maybe if you write to Mr Mugabe enclosing about 10 million $Z he might be prepared to help. Sorry , make that Swiss Francs, a million $Z is now worth about £1.50!

Hi Mark
Scale Aircraft Modelling did a pretty good 3-part series on all the Hawks with lots of development and operational detail, and just about every colour scheme put on a Hawk.
Vol 23 no 6, Aug 2001 had first generation Hawks in RAF service.
Vol 23 No 9, Nov 2001 had first generation export Hawks - 50 and 60 series which is what your colour scheme is.
Vol 24 No 2, Apr 2002 had second and third generation Hawks - Hawk 100 and 200 series.
Eric's link is great - thanks Eric!
Which kit are you building Mark?
Does anyone know of any intermediate size Hawk kits around, say 1/6th scale, ie about 5ft wingspan 6ft long? I have a Fox-Composites kit on order, but would like a bigger model eventually.

Gordon,
Well, after 8 months, my Skygate Hawk is arriving on Tuesday. I have ummed and erred for ages as to which scheme to do. Seeing as my wife surprised me by paying for it for me for Xmas I feel indebted to do it in the Red Arrows scheme as she requested (
) but I am really getting an urge to go 'military' for two reasons. Firstly, is that almost every Hawk I see nowadays is in the Red Arrows scheme and, secondly, the guy I have lined up to paint it is absolutely awesome at weathering/washing and grubbying up an airframe. I think this look will also emphasise the amazing moulding details on the kit as the rivets/screws etc will stand out more when dirtied up.
I also want to fit the underbody cannon so if anyone knows where I can get cross sections of that then that would be great. Also, if anyone out there enjoys making moulds etc and fancies producing me one then please let me know
Rgds,
Mark

Geoff, surely that price is wrong!!!?? That's pretty much the price of the HUGE and unrivalled build quality of the Skygate Hawk!! Think Graupner must be added a nice little margin as isn't that model built by Skygate too??

Geoff, that's my point - I don't think it does. If Skygate build them both why is the smaller model the same price as the BIG model??
Anyway, not gonna get too hung up on that. It will sell coz it's a nice model

Mark

Hi Mark
The cannon fairing x-sections are on the drawings below, along with the wing pylon locations, rocket launchers and tanks.
If the plastic kit is anything to go by your Hawk will look fab in the Indonesian scheme and I'm sure that your wife will agree when she sees it.
As an added bonus for you
here's a pic of me after one of the many back-seat rides I had in Hawks when I was ground engineer officer at Chivenor back in 1993/94.
So you can understand why I'm a big fan of the Hawk. It'll be very satisfying to get one back in the air at Chivenor, which is where we still fly our models.
Hey Geoff. At 1/5.5, that's the same scale as the old John Carpenter Hawk which Pim Smith flies, so it probably is just the size I want.
Cheers

Hi Mark
The pubs are just magazines that I bought over many years. Scale Aircraft Modelling magazine, ISSN 0956-1420, is still available, but the old "Planes" magazine which contained Alf Granger's Hawk drawing is no longer with us. The 3-views were in Vol 1 No 1 of Planes, published in 1980 (this mag moved house with me 7 times from 1980 onwards during my RAF postings - no more thank goodness). Planes has no ISSN number. A pic of the front cover is below in case you manage to trace it - the Aviation Bookshop in Tonbridge Wells might have a copy. http://www.aviation-bookshop.com/ I've never seen these 3-views elsewhere.
I don't buy many books/mags now so might be able to save up enough for a big Hawk
Dave Gladwin mentioned a Hawk book and its ISBN published by Dalton Fine Books in an earlier thread about his big Hawk, which appears to have lots of good info. I forget the full title.
Cheers

Simply called "Red Arrows". Very good but I now have another which has more excellent photos of the aircraft : Called "Reds" by John Rands and published by AirLife. ISBN 1-84037-121-8.
The Grainger drawings you refer to are very good but have at least two fundamental mistakes, anyone spotted them ?
Of course for scale modelling there is an excellent CD available from Traplet featuring ther Reds aircraft which the team has supplemented for me with a photo CD of the new markings on XX306 which is now Scott Morley's (exec officer and Red 4) .
My second hawk is XX237, was Dicky Patounas' machine when he was leader.
My Hawks are in the final stage of preparation with the clear coats going over the markings, then gearing up.
Now, a highly succesful British Aircraft in widespread service and markings, with the RAF and RN , how could any Brit. even contemplate a foreigh air force colour scheme ????
Must say, Gordon, you look every inch the part in your zoot suit and turning trousers , halcyon days, what are you doing now in beautiful Devon ?
Best regards,
David.

Thanks again guys!!!
I know, I know but I want to go with a scheme that I like and that everyone else isn't doing. I don't like mostly black or grey models, every other Hawk is in the Reds colours so that kind of limits my choices
Rgds,
Mark
