Hey Mike,

Just had a look, 700g each thats servos, retracts and controls installed but no struts or spar and i have yet to plumb the retracts but i guess thats only going to be a few grams extra.

Where did you source your spar?

I Hysoled a carbon tube inside the original aluminium one, works fine, will have to weigh my wings again I have forgot what they weigh.

Im stuck on the canopy, ive cut it out but cant decide how to make it quick release. Was thinking of making a 2mm ply base then putting strip around it so there is a good area to adhere to the canopy but thats as far as ive got so far. Any suggestions?

This is what I made up for the Falcon, used 2mm carbon sheet no problems yet though I do have a new canopy from the states from Noray much better.

Search back through this thread and you'll find several different ways to attach your canopy. Here's how I did mine (post #644).

This worked out well on both my Falcon 120's. Most of the local Falcon 120 guys have copied it.

Before i cut mine i was tempted to make a composite one but got too many other projects so it will have to wait.

The canopy in the picture is from my first Falcon. The base is 3/32" balsa, attached with epoxy. For my second Falcon I bought a Noray canopy and made the base out of 1/32" plywood and attached it with Goop. Both worked out fine but I prefer the plywood base because it is stronger.

I had to solder an extension onto the hatch latch to make it work.

Has anyone found out what brand of covering is used for the orange falcon 120. I have a set of black wings i would like to recover then with orange covering that matches the orange falcon 120.

Well my wing weighs in at 1,200g that is some difference, I did a lot of reinforcing on mine as I am using a stupidly overpowered turbine of 20lb, strut, wheel and brake weight 155g so that is a difference of 345g extra on reinforcement, sounds a lot.

Hi Mike, yes its amazing how the weight piles on when doing any kind of mod. Your engine has the extra ommf that mine hasnt, 20 lbs compared to around 14 on mine, but I bet my engine weighs more than yours. Just goes to show what a good plane it really is.

I am just about to change motor for an EvoJet 90, the instaled weight is 3.1lbs that is not a miss type it is 3.1lb instaled, should be interesting.

Here are some pic's of some progress finally!!! Finally scored some retracts for it. I am trying to get a group buy for some of the digitech legs that are on sale but no cigar so far.

Made up the engine mounting bracket out of some 2024-T3 aluminium that was donated by an A330 So good quality plastic

I might cut down the excess bolt length hanging below the fuse to make it look a little better. I have also replaced the nylon wing bolts with some aluminium ones,

I have a decent sized order i have to put through airpower to get the last bits and pieces i need for the L/G, and i just need to buy the Hs-225MG's for the rudders. I am trying to make up my mind as to what R/X to use. Originally i thought of using an AR9100, but after reading the thread which in effect stated that there are no voltage regs built into the unit and i can't use the Li-po's i have bought, i am starting to think twice. My mate has been running the AR9100 with hi-tech servos all round and on li-po's with no problems so far (because we didn't realise there wasn't a built in reg[X(]),but i'm not prepared to take the risk. It might actually be cheaper to go down the path of a smart-fly power system sports plus.

Also, does anyone know where i can get a ready made servo cover? I need one for the single elevator servo and I could make my own, but if they are cheap enough...

The other pic's i ahve posted are of my flaps. As you can see i can get heaps of throw from them, and i didn't swap them over. I just re-hinged them with the pivot point flush with the lower wing surface. I covered them in red monokote cos i thought it looked better, and i had to cover up a little oops i made[]

Good advise on the battery, A123's are the way to go.

One question, how have you supported the motor mount? most have cracked the fus at the joint if additional support has not been incorporated, the standard balsa block is inadequate for the turbine weight if you operate on a bumpy field or your landings are not greased in every time and who's are?

Ripmax and CSL both make standard servo cover's, they both have servo mounts on them which you would have to cut off to allow HS225's to fit, also I would fit a digital metal geared servo on a primary surface with only one servo operating it.

Flaps are a different proposition on a jet, from 0deg up to 45deg they work as flaps and increase lift without the drag becoming too noticable, from 45deg up to about 60deg the lift is still produced but so is turbulance and hence the drag increases, if you wish to use the flaps to slow the airframe a significant amount to offset the residue thrust from the turbine then you have to get them beyond the 60deg mark as so act as airbrakes and not lift generators, the closer you can get to 90deg the better the airbrake effect, now lifting the ailerons (Reflex) gives washout to the wing and helps prevent tip stalling this will all require down elevator to compensate and the rate of decent which has increased has to be controlled with thrust down to the threshold and the round out as normal with elevator.

I thought only the heavier turbines had suffered from the cracking according to the thread?? I've only got a little Wren 54 mk 2.5 on there. I spoke with a guy who had one of these and he said those little black tubes no one seems to know what they are for are really important. If you look at the wing root rib it has a hole at the trailing edge for the tube to go into. you have to drill a corresponding hole in the engine mount, but this serve to use the wing root rib as a load bearing/spreading member. I might replace them with the same sized carbon tube. should have them installed soon and tell you what i think of them once installed.

Flaps throws and effedct are the same jet or otherwise, but i do remember someone writing on the thread the heaps of flap wasn't needed... maybe tim777 ?? anyway i have around the 80 degrees mark at my disposal if i need it.

I'm also toying with the idea of making my own plugs for the wheel well linings, as the ones included are not that deep, or wide for that matter.

As has been posted before, I would not want the weight of a turbine small or large sitting on a cantilever with no support except for the fus skin, neither would I want the weight of a turbine on a bouncy landing supported by the TE of the wing, but then thats your choise.

Flap effects are not the same on a jet due to the residue thrust and no prop drag to help, without introducing some kind of drag to the airframe it will just keep on flying on the tick over thrust, on a conventional airframe you have the motor at tick over and the prop turning at a speed that is lower than the forward pitch speed of the prop, therefore you have a built in airbrake the dia of the prop, you do not have this on a turbine, hence the need for drag and power to land at a pre-determined point and not just float on until it touches down, take a look on most of the vidio's you see on here, most will take off way to one side and land way to the other side, to be properly under control the touch down should be approximatly at the same point as the commencement of the take off run, watch any full size for pointers.

Eventually it will crack. I had a Wren SS (which weighs the same as a Wren 54) on my first one. After 35 flights I finally bounced a landing and cracked the fuse. It's easier to put the reinforcement in now instead of fixing it later.
