RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
Well i made up an adjustable length nose gear mechanism. The idea was to lengthen the nose leg to increase wing angle of attack for an easier take off and reduce it again for landing to hold the nose down on the rough grass. Tried it out yesterday and worked well, take off was lighter on the elevator and on landing the nose stuck to the ground. It operates from a double acting pheumatic cylinder and when pressurized up, the mechanism goes over center to take all load off it, and when down ithe mechanism stops on itself again taking the load off.
I did find that the last time i flew, my hydrulic damper i made and fitted inside the leg, had in fact leaked, which was why there was a nose gear bounce in my last video. I repaired the unit and changed the oil to a lighter oil and it performed brilliantly yesterday. I think this helped a great deal as well.
With the leg in shortened mode, the mechanism still allows full use of the suspension. I did find that due to the geometry, the front of the apex links almost touch the ground when the suspension is fully bottomed out, so i restricted its movement for the test flight slightly to prevent it digging in. Will need a slight rethink
Wind was full on 90 degrees and really rough, a credit to plane yet again.
Nose gear light was great in the not so bright sky, but smoke system was not impressive, i think due to the strong winds disipating it really quickly.

Internet just crashed so lost the upload to youtube to see the landing, will post later, cheers Tim

I have the smaller Bob Cat with fixed gear at a location I like and it takes 12 oz. of weight on the stabilizer to rotate. I measured a friend’s 120 and it takes over 50 oz. on the stabilizer to rotate. 50 oz. seems like too much and I think the mains should be closer to the CG.

On the nose gear length, this may not be relavent, but the B-58 used an oleo nose strut of course. It also had a lever that hit a stop on retraction and bled the strut pressure off to 150 psi, down from about 500 if I remember right. It made for landing on a soft strut instead of a solid one when the weight was much lower. Wonder if someone will come up with a simple deal like that for models? Bob

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
couple of questions I was wondering if you all might help ??
first, I found kerosene fairly cheap to buy at Oil dist, but they offer regular kerosene and odorless its a few cents more has anyone used it???
second, Im building the nitromodels Falcon 120 and the main gear legs are 8 in long and the nose is 6 in. Robart Robo strutts are barely 6.8in, what struts are you recomending for the mains??or can you modify the wing and use the shorter Robart struts and make all three 6 in long??
third, Im useing a JJ1400 turbine the mounts supply'd in the kit are hardwood blocks, are wood sqreews to fasten the engine ok or bolts through the block and fuse? andif your not gonna use the wood, who's mount works best?
and last Im told that brakes are needed so which brakes do you all recomend?
Thanks Guys TOPGUN

Hi Guys and thanks for the compliments...
I'd like to thank Ravivos for the excellent pictures.
There was no inspiration other than the severe lack of runway at my local field. I must admit that being able to cool-off between flights is a very big plus. 35 degrees C + 90% humidity is hot! But returning the plane is both fun and a good exercise
When I started the conversion I thought about leaving an option for the landing gear. I've since removed and taped over all the bays. This one is a keeper as a float plane.
Sorry but I'm not the kit producing person. I'd be happy to share the design and lessons learned with anyone who wishes to.

No doubt Erez did an exellent work on his water falcon, it was absolutely exilirating to see this falcon take off over the "kineret" lake.
erez, thank you for your compliments but the credit is all yours...
Raviv.
