Hi guys,

Does anyone know of a source for these very small halon extinguishers? I mean the little ones like the size of a small can of hirspray or somehting?

I think they may be for aviation or boating but I do not know where to buy them

TIA

Hi Matt,

Kevin Whitlow had one at Florida Jets. He told me he bought it at a local Dallas, TX hobby shop but that they where not made anymore.

Sure is a practical size.

I am trying to locate them also. Will keep you posted if i find a source.

That could be a good alternative. however, the one Kevin had was small enough to fit in a shirt pocket.

The price tag on Kevins read $8.95

Perfect in case of a wet start, but quite useless in a forrest fire

Yeah those little ones from Sporty's are nice, I have found them as cheap as 65 bucks at other places, they are made by H3R.

I was talking about the very tiny ones, usually square that are very cheap, I did not see kevin's but that is what it sounds like. They would be like a one time use almost and are like 10-15 bucks

in 1999 i bought two small halon fire extinguishers from amt netherlands (www.amtjets.nl).
last year in sept, due to a hot start, i had the opportunity to test these extinguishers.

i can only warn everybody to use these ones: halon seems to be very aggressive to all metals. everything was oxydating and rusty. the steel wires of the aileron and flap hinges (bandit) caused them to seeze. everything inside the turbine looked like after a nuclear attack (although had been repaired).
the damage of the fire was equal to the damage of the extinguisher.
i think CO2 extinguisher is the better way.

I think that John is correct. I purchased a reconditioned CO2 extinguisher recently and I told the fellow at the 3S Fire Extinguisher Company that either halon or CO2 would be fine and his comment was that the Halon is no longer available.
After some of the comments above it sounds like that is a good thing for us if they damage your aircraft. Gary

GARY, YOUR CORRECT ON THE HALON STATEMENT, MY GUY WHO REFILLS OUR SHOP EXT SAID A REPLACEMENT CALLED HALLOTRON(?) IS ON THE WAY. APPARENTLY HALON ISN'T MEETING THE EPA'S GUIDELINES THESE DAYS. WILL BE INTERESTING WHAT THE AIRFORCE AND GUARD BASES DO? I SAY IF YOU HAVE A HALON ONE BE STINGY WITH IT OR GET CO2. SCOTT

As I understand it, Halon is an ozone-depleting gas.

Hence the reason it's no longer readily available.

Here are some small halon extingushers...but they are a little more expensive than what you were looking for. They are 10" tall and 3" in diameter. They are refillable though......

They are no longer making Halon but it is still available. I just got a Halon extinguisher refilled and it cost around $120

David,

You can buy a 5lb C02 ext filled up for less than a refill on your Halon?? My refills on the 5lb C02 are $12 at the local shop.

Matt and John,
I finally decided to quit lurking and sign up on this forum since you guys are talking about me . The halon extinguisher that I have came from a local hobby shop called Wild Bills hobbies about 3 years ago. At the time he had 4 or 5 of them and since they were very dusty I assumed that they had been on his shelf for a really long time (maybe more than 5 years). I have used it for a wet start one time with no ill effects to my engine, but since it is very small and not refillable I prefer to use my 5lb CO2 most of the time. As I understand it Halon is illegal for most applications since the fumes it gives off will kill you if used in confined spaces, I also assume that because of this the little extingiushers are not manufactured any longer, but I may be wrong. I might be able to run home at lunch and get the manufacturer's name and address if you like.
