BVM Brakes

I have a set of BVM Brakes. I here to apply a small amount of grease to the o-rings that do the braking. I only have a standard valve, and I also have restrictors in the airline. I have not tested them yet, but the restrictors seem to apply air fast enough not to panic. Any input would help. They are on a CS Models X-terminator that weighs around 12-12.5 pounds.

Larry,
Which valve do you have? If it is the BVM Dual Rate valve, you don't need the restrictors in the lines, as one position only applies low pressure for gentle braking, and the other applies high pressure for "panic" stops. The instructions specify a small coating of vaseline on the o-rings ("quad" rings actually).
They should work fine, but the "Smooth Stop" valve is a major improvement.

Larry,
I have a set of BVM brakes on a BVM Aggressor 2 and have had a lot of fun with them. The biggest thing I do is, Keep lots of grease on them, I don't use vasiline I got a tube of Snake oil greese and I really lube everything up. I was flatspotting the tires since it would lock up without grease.
I use the standard valve off or on. They will not lock now I start out with about 110 psi in my system and i use it 3 or 4 times on the taxi out. Then take off retract the gear. fly 6-7 minutes. throw the gear down land or T&G then use the brakes to stop. then taxi in use the brakes 2-3 times on the taxi in. They will not lock and they drag the plane to a stop quite quickly.
I really don't think you need the other stuff unless maybe you have a turbine.

Larry,
The BVM "Smooth Stop" brake valve is a very worthwhile investment. They list for $74.95.

They only utilize 1-2 PSI from the storage tank per application. They are very easy to set-up, and are a welcome addition to any jet. They require a micro servo such as a JR351 to operate them.
I use one air tank in my BobCat for both the retracts and brakes. I pump the tank to 110-120 PSI, and routinely have around 60-70 psi left after flight. The "Smooth Stop" requires 40 psi minimum to function, so pressurize your tank just before taxi to have the maximum amount of air available.
I use a mixer to hook the brakes to down elevator, and use Aux 3 as well for brakes. I activate the brake/down elevator mixer with the gear down switch. The brake servo does not operate when the gear is up.
The best set-up, is a seperate tank for the brake system. You can do this if the space is available. The extra air tank only weighs about an ounce.
I don't think that there is such a thing as brakes that are too good. Most overrun accidents are caused by the lack of reliable brakes.
An expensive airplane can be turned into worthless junk when you try to cut corners on important accessories.

You also have the choice of one of the new electronic brake valves. They are well worth the money and fuction flawlessly. I think you can pick one up from jet cat for about 69.00 which is cheaper than the smootstop and it does not require a servo. Also it does not need to have the little O Rings inside changed or lubed.

Thanks,

I got my F-16 electronic break from Nicolas G.
See http://www.spiderjets.be
I like the BVM "Smooth Stop" better because it does not use as much air as the electronic break.
