RE: TBM Shock Jet
30 flights and 13 gallons so far since last Sat. Flies great. P-80 powered though, 6 1/2 min. flights. take off flaps on a grass field is about a 30 ft. roll. I set up a crow and it is about a 20 ft. roll landing.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Got it all done, put the p-70 in it, not to much mod required, removed the bulkhead the starter goes through and was able to install the fod screen in there as well.
mounted a 16 oz smoke tank and test ran it in the yard, great smoke hopefully get to test fly it real soon. the burn rate of the p-70 at the rpm to make 13 pound of thrust as the 60 would do should give me 8 minutes on the 50 oz tank alone, but will add the extra 16 anyway. all up weight of the fuse with everything in it is 11 pounds with uat full and 12 oz's of smoke oil.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
mine is done and ready for maiden, looks to be built pretty well. there are a number of them flying and I think they will be just fine. the wing design has been changed from the original. aluminum spar replaces the carbon spar it had.

Larry, why did you set up the crow? is there any instability with full flaps, or just more drag? I have about 75 degrees of flaps and it looks like it will stop in its tracks in flight with all that area. Kevin

RE: TBM Shock Jet
i am upgrading the turbine from the p60 to either a used p70 or new rabbit and turn it down a little.......
From what i heard the super bee definitely has more punch then the p60.....

larry, veritech thanks for your input i guess you can break anything if ya try hard. Any one up at 4700 ft flying a shok or machjet i hope that wyomings elavation does not efect the plane or engine to much. Im also 5 hours from the nearest waver holder guess we will go with out for a while. just cant wait to get this bird going!

RE: TBM Shock Jet
just flew the shockjet yesterday at a local field...pretty short runway.... since i changed the wheels to bvm wheels that thing moves after touch down.... short runway ran out quickly ...plus wet runway so nose wheel didnt do much braking at all...
then i realized...i have bvm wheels.... all i need is the brake asemblies and good to go... so getting some bvm brakes on the main gear of the shockjet....
then i can stop anywhere.......

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Mine has flown at 4800-4900 ft altitude (Not to sure the exact elevation of our field) and I have to agree with limeybob... It is a little faster in the air but if you use the flaps, it almost comes to a standstill for landing. I tested my full flaps at altitude and was surprised to find out that it took about half throttle to get it to gain anything in the way of speed above a crawl. (The landing in my video on an earlier page was at about half flaps (Take-off setting) and it slowed down pretty well there)

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Can anyone suggest a starting point for aileron and elevator throw? How much down mix is needed with half and full flaps?

RE: TBM Shock Jet
I used on aileron all I could get expo 40%. The flaps I first flew with all I could get, a little to much. I took out about a 3/8 of an inch. The flaps were almost 90 degrees for the initial flight. It doesn't take much down elevator to correct for flap deployment maybe an 1/8 inch or less and probably less.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
I have one coming this week to replace my dead Baby Boomerang. I have the 83oz. JetTech Kevlar tank from the Baby Boomer I'd like to put in it. Does anyone know if it will fit?
Thanks,

RE: TBM Shock Jet
I got 3 flights on mine Sunday. Haven't figured out how to slow it down for landings, but it flies very well. Plenty of power with the super bee engine but as a turbine novice the spool up time seems to take forever. Missed approaches make my hair even grayer. Seems like I have time to recite the Lords Prayer and cross myself a couple of times while waiting for the power to come up! I haven't tried it with flaps yet so maybe that is the trick to slowing it down. That will be on my list for the next flight.
Just wondering if any of you have had any trouble other than the tires coming off that I need to watch for.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
D.W. The spool up time should be no longer than 3 seconds. If it is more than this call me and we will figure out how to go about setting the ECU for quicker spool up. And like Shok says Use the flaps. You will find with full flaps you will need at least 1/2 throttle just to keep the plane in the air. I have landed and come to a complete stop in under 10 feet with this plane. The tires are OK you just need to glue them to the rims. I will say they don't like bounce landings but they do hold up well.
