Default What I worked on this weekend!

Buck asked me if I could make some brake hubs with side mounted air connection. DONE!

While I was at it, I decided to make some wheels and brakes for myself. I had some spare BVM tires that measure 2.8 inches. They are several years old, and I don't know if BV even sells them anymore, at least when I looked them up, there were none that size on the site. So I decided to make rims and brakes for it.

Also made some rims for the Kingcat.

Joe Mcbride test flew some rims for me a few days ago, apparently of the tires blew off the rim. I did some testing here (see picture) with the intairco tire, it blows off the rim at about 6,000 RPM. With BVM tires, they held for more than 12,000 RPM. I did a spreadsheet on diameter vs rpm and you would have to touch down at 100 MPH for the bv tire to blow off the rim I made.

I will test fly soon and get my own solid data. Joe, if you read this, sorry that didn't work. We decided over the weekend to make our rims only for BV replacement tires as his tires have a deeper "flange" inside with more meat to grab onto with the spikes we machined. The intairco are simply too soft to do this with. The good news is, the rims we made are at least at this time for the kingcat and the Flash. IE, your existing kingcat brakes will work, your existing intairco brakes will work, but the new tires are gonna have to be the bv tires. 3.5 inch for the kingcat and 3.25 inch for the flash.

Anyway, pictures tell the story of my learning curve as well.

Would you please quit posting stuff like this ?

My jealousy factor is heading into uncharted territory as I watch how much time you have to play, and how much fun you're having. []

Lucky for me, I seem to have a built-in mechanism for lowering my blood pressure when you get me worked up like this... http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/...sbloodpressure

Hey Gordon, the booze you sent was absolutely over the top! Send me an email with anything you want, I will make it for you! I have the code done on a lot of stuff, so it is just a matter of chocking up material and hitting the go button.

I definitely owe you something for the EXTREME generosity. I was sick the weekend it came in and I sat there and sipped on it "MEDICINALLY" for days. At one point I was sure I was a Scott!

You sure are getting fancy with that equipment...beats a quarter. Smokin' Joe needs some spinners though

Now you need to start working on a way to recycle all those shavings and leftover stock into new stock.

Glad you liked the goodies Sean. I may take you up on your offer when I next need something ... but most of all I'd just love to be able to do stuff like that myself.

Sadly, even the little mill / lathe that I do have (previously owned by the Grateful Dead !!) gets very little usage. If I ever get to retire (looking a bit less likely now that my 401k lost about 40% of its value [X(] while I was away on vacation) I'd love to get back into machining stuff and learning to do it by CNC this time.

Sean,

You would be the "Ultimate Fast Learner" then I guess. I'm with Gordon. You're making all of us sick with this cool stuff. I'm not the jealous type, but come on...You're too much! [8D]

i wonder if half the teeth on that hub might be a better way. you are chewing into a lot of the tire material with that many teeth and i am thinking leaving a bit more tire material may let it hold together better.

Hey Pat, my "RPM device" hooks up to a Dremel and I use a standard tach for RPM, I will try with half the teeth and see if it makes any difference on the intairco tire for giggles, but having spent about 60 hours working on this over the last few days, all I can say is the BV tire itself is simply better suited for a two piece rim than the intairco tire.

If anyone is going to want some of these wheels, I think it would be better to take the wheels and put a BV tire on it. I have ordered this morning a bunch of different sizes of the BV tire to run some testing.

There were reports that changing tires on the Lightning was a big pain and couldn't really be done at home. With this design you will be able to put a BV Mig 15 tire on the rim in 10 minutes or less with no straining of any kind, simply tighten down the screws.

Plus with the lathe and mill, I should be able to make a better looking rim than what is out there for the lightning

Thanks for the input! It was a thread about 3 months ago that I asked what the ultimate rim would be, and this is what we came up with from RCU community suggestions.

sean,
whats the changes in being able to make an "overhaul" kit for the comp-arf eurosport gear? the mains in mine are on the last leg and it'd be nice to over-haul them (since they still work great) instead of replacing them.
