One of the novelties of Neurenberg Toy Fair (taking place this week) is the A123 battery packs.
They are taken now in the Graupner product line in Europe.

Andy has also developed a nice switch that you can charge the 2cell 123 pack thru. Also i echo what Woketman said, electrodynamics is on top of this 123 batt stuff and has everything you will need. I bought the cellpro4 from him and its perfect for charging these packs. I balance the cells at home before going to the field which takes a little longer. At the field i just charge to 100% and don`t balance, its so much faster that way. These batts are the best thing since 2.4 came in the hobby...ha !!!

Why balancing A123s ??
It is not necessary at all, we were getting used to it since we were using Lipos, but A123s are not sensitive at all to voltage differences between the cells.
I have been reading pages and pages of official reports and forum comments on the internet and I could only conclude there's no need for balancing.
I am using Orbit Pocketlader (V2.24, now with LiFP charging program) in case I am happy with max 4A (= most of the times !) ; I also have a Dapter+Ultra Duo Plus 30 if I want to have max 8A (!).
Some people were even reporting to charge their 2300s with 10A without any problem or sign of cell fatigue.
To avoid the "I told you so !" comments, I balance my A123 packs every 5-10 cycles nevertheless with an independent pocket balancer (MKS 3 Lipo Balancer) :
http://www.skyhobbies.com.sg/Lipo_Balancers.htm
This balancer is cheap, very practical, and has more features as well, such as battery tester and discharger (for long storage of Lipos for example).
I cannot imagine the DeWalt packs of 36V or automobile packs being charged balanced. Correct me if I am wrong.

Nicolas,
Actually, these batteries are balance charged in DeWalt packs AND hybrid vehicle applications. I know this because I have bought and disassembled both. It is not as crucial to balance charge after an initial charge, but I will tell you from first hand experience that about 5% of the cells, factory fresh, wind up with a voltage of about 1.5volts, when made inseries with other cells as in DeWalt packs and hybrid applications. I don't know why this occurs, but it happens. An initial balance charge corrects this problem and it never seems to pop back up.
If you do not balance charge your packs, at least initially, you MAY be missing out on some capacity of your battery. The fewer cells you have, the more reduced your capacity may be. After an initial balance charge, it is not as crucial and any loss of capacity will be less than 50-100 Mah.

Chad is right-the Dewalt packs do have an integrated balancer in them. I have taken apart 3 DeWalt packs now and found only one cell that was not within 1/100 volt of the rest. They usually come out from 3.0 to 3.2 The last pack I did all ten cells were exactly 3.29. The one cell that was out was 2.0. It takes a bit more time but I individually charge each cell twice before I make a pack-probably not necessary but cant hurt. I use JR leads for the balance leads for flight packs. I have two chargers and like them both. The TME Extrema and the Bantam e-station 6. TheBantam charges/discharges all types of batteries and is also 12 volt OR 120 volt powered.
The hardest part I have found so far is finding good shrinkwrap in the proper size

Run them through the EQ!
2 - 2S1P packs are going to be plenty for the majority of applications. With their super fast recharge rates, why carry the extra weight.

Backup?
I am new to jets but in my 40% Extra I run two packs on the receiver.
So I can charge through the charge lead that plugs into the EQ10.
Speaking of which, on the EQ10 do I need to plug leads 1 and 10 into the battery ports on a JR 1221 receiver?
Thanks

Banker,
You will not be able to "balance" charge through the charge leads. Get your batteries with JR balancing leads on them. This allows you to use a standard servo extension as a balancing lead. if you are going to to use a cellpro, just use a cellpro to JR converter cable (available at my site and other places I'm sure) and charge the batteries directly.
You can charge the batteries through the EQ10 if you do NOT want to balance charge.
And yes, plug 1 and 10 in to the receiver. If you are going to use more than the 10 channels and need to run some channels of the receiver directly, make sure they are not running a servo (eg throttle, electronic valve).

Banker,
Unfortunately, as with most chargers, I believe the CellPro Multi 4 is a positive shift charger (I know for sure the older 4S was and have no reason to believe they changed it).
I would charge direct to the battery if being a positive shift charger is a problem.
