Yep, that´s the Swedish Airforce, the AJ 37 Viggen only needed about 300-400m for takeoff and landing depending on armament and fuel. Landing on roads was what the Viggen was designed for. Wartime bases located around the countryside consisted of 3-4 landingstrips in different places some km´s apart. The system was called Base 90 systems and we had a lot of theese wartime bases spread from north to south in Sweden.
The bases was defended by antiaircraft companys and ground defence companys, whith rangers and dogs for sniffing up saboteurs.
Our roads has a lot of the emergency landingstrips that was seen in the movie.
But now the Viggen is replaced by the Saab JAS 39 Gripen, and the wartime bases is abbandoned.
The threat from Russia is not very high at the moment, but who nows in the future?

Awesome planes, it was cool to see them flying, but I think that was possibly the dumbest airplane movie I have ever seen.
It's lke they tried to come up with stupid things to put in, as if it's more impressive to hover a helicopter right over where they plan to set down the plane, park cars in the way, etc. Plus, what's up with all those sci-fi sounds. they always manage to ruin the movie for people who know and work around aircraft. lol

Here's a good video showing the short runway capabilities of the Viggen. I remember this one, I was present: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJo7a...eature=related

The was a Swedish guy called Ohlsen that used to make them in different sizes. Jim Fox here in the UK made a small one of these as a 90 size DF kit back in the 80's. They were very popular and I had a couple. Great flying plane. I heard some one had taken over the Ohsen kit range. Anyone know?
You would just have to do the reverse thrust[8D]
I saw one of these demonstrated in the late 80's. It was there as a farewell to the English Electric Lightning, and it was almost as impressive. But a Lightning could not taxi backwards.
