Pete,

If it ends up looking 1/10th as good as your Lightning, you will have a real winner.

Pete

Joe Lewis here.

Here are a few pics of my rebuild. Last time you saw her was at Florida jets after the midair. We have had some wet weather her in Ohio for the last 2 weeks so I pulled her out and she is moving along just fine. I stripped the fusaforist. Then the fuse was c'aed together and reinforced with 6 oz fiberglass cloth. New formers where cut from the plans and installed. Some lite bondo and alot of sanding and she is just about ready for primer.

I am going to build a new wing because the left wing panel was broke in half and the right has cracks throughout it. I could repair them but would not feel comfortable flying it. A friend of mine here is going to help me make up a root and tip template to send to a guy in Texas that will CNC hot wire a new foam core. I hope to have her ready for next season.

Pete,

I used a product called Citra Strip. It is avalable at Home Depot You put it on and 30 minutes later you can use a squegee to scrap of the paint. I did find that with red paint you have to put it on kinda of heavy. You might have to go over a few spots twice. After you whipe it down you can sand it with 100 grit sand paper.

I use a Palm sander for the big work then go back over the whole thing by hand with 100 grit Because some of the piant that is left over gums up and sticks to the surface. After that I primer with 2 coats of Laquer primer then wet sand with 200 grit and do Spot putty work. At this point I only work the Spot putty aeras and primer those aeras. Once all the Spot putty work is done, A final coat of primer and wet sand with 400 grit then 600 grit. This gives me a nice smooth surface for the paint.

Pete tell me you didn't crash that pretty Bandit ARF just so you could make this thread! Now thats dedication! Nice job too. But with those long Canadian winters shouldn't you have done the repair then? (Nice green grass in the backround)

Looks like the rebuilt fuse will be 24oz heavier, plus paint.
If I do it again, I will use 4oz carbon cloth, instead of 6oz.

More work done on the bandit this week, got to spray the first coat of primer on today, most of the primer will be sanded off. The first coat of primer reveals all the flaws that you could not see, so spot filler is added and most of the primer comes off.

I used a product called Citra Strip. It is avalable at Home Depot You put it on and 30 minutes later you can use a squegee to scrap of the paint.

I use Citra Strip also. Great stuff, isn't as caustic as some paint strippers, and doesn't damage the fiberglass etc. Works really well, and takes all the hard work out of stripping paint down. Very messy job though. It has quite a strong smell, so use in a well ventillated area and wear a respirator mask. A little goes a long way, but sometimes on stubborn/darker paints, you need to hit it 2 or 3 times, but do biggie, as you just paint it on with a paint brush and leave for 30 mins or longer (the longer the better).
