The dynamax wont fit inside and would have even bigger ducting problems.
Hey Kris. This guy just needs to be ignored. He's the kind of guy that walks into a thread and doesn't contribute anything useful. This guy is anti-BVM andjust likes to stir up trouble. Lookat his post history. A real leach who doesn't havethe nads tofigure out how to make a conversion sucessful. He's not really worth the time to respond to.

Kirk,

Just for kicks try the spike BV sells for the Sabre arf. By the way the f-16 looks great.
Hey Pablo. Good to hear from you. I do intend to put the spike in the intake. Iadded the intake spikeon my Starfire last year and it made a difference.

I've been comparing videos of the Skymater 1/8th scale F-16 with a P-70 to my video from the weekend and on the straight and levelI am getting the same performance with the EVF but I have more verticle than what I've seen so far.

A little off topic but what did you settle on (powertrain wise) for your Starfire? I want to do the same for mine. Its really light and I think perfect for edf.

Can you give me the complete list of items needed for the conversion?

Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,

I ended up using the BVMEVF 5612 fan. I also used the BVM inlet adapter. Its a fiberglass adapter designed to fit the BVM fan in the ducting from the glow fan days. BVM no longer sells the EVF 5612 fan, it has been replacedwith the new EVF-2 fan. The EVF-2 is a few ounces lighter, produces 1/2 pound more thrust, and runs at a lower amp draw.

A list of things needed for the conversion:
- BVMEVF-2 fan (includes motor and controller) it's a true plug-and-play setup.
- BVMInlet adapter
- Batteries Thunder Power 12 cell45C 6400 mAh batteries
- Mylar to make an exhaust tube

Everything else was stock from the kit, including the glow fan ducting. Mine weighed 15 pounds ready to fly with batteries.

If I can help in any other way, please feel free to contact me.

has anyone tried to use a SS turbine pipe for a thrust tube?

Not to my knowledge but I don't see why it wouldn't work if it met a couple of conditions. First, the front openingwould have to have an open large enough for the fan to slideinto and still get anair tight seal at the back of the fan. Second, the opening at the end would have to be the correct size for the fan. In the case of the EVF, the front openeing that mates with the fan would need to be 4.6 inches (if I am correctly remembeing the diameter of the EVF) and the rear opening would need to be 3.5 inches. Most use mylar because it is very light and fairly easy to get the shape needed.

We use a rolled mylar sheet for the thrust tube.

I am assuming that BVM sells the mylar correct?

BVM does sell precutmylar exhaust tubes for their jets. You could get the one for the electra. You'd have to cut off some of the length and overlap it in such a way that the rear of the opening is 3.5 inches.

Or, you could get a roll of mylar from Taps Plastic and make your own. http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=255

BVM custom cut one for Gunrad when he installed the EVF in his Byron F-16, so they could probably custom one for any jet if you give them the dimentions.

Thanks Mark. That's good to know. Are you planning to attend Jets Over Whidbey this year? It would be great to have another electron consumer at the event.

This conversion was a proof of concept and I am happy with the level of performance of the BVM EVF in a 22 pound airframe after fixing just one of the three intake ducting issues.  This airframe is 5 years old, has had three different power plants (P-70, TJ100, EVF 5612), and has had move damage repaired twice.  The turbine intake ducting was replaced with the ducting for the TJ100, which has also been replaced with 120mm intake ducting and the airplane has been repainted.  Because all of this has added weight and the newest version of the airframe is lighter out of the box than the version I have (when it came out of the box), I have decided to purchase a new airframe.  When the new airframe arrives, I'll continue on where I left off.

Hi Mark - Yes, I will most likely do the same scheme on the new one.

Cool. Whidbey is a great place to fly. Jets Over Whidbey is a great event to attend. It is truely a pilot's event with no vendors or sponsors. The wife doesn't mind if I go off to events across the country, but in this case I'm already in the Pacific Northwest. I returned for another contract.
