Butch Sickles also built the Hustler following the demise of a smaller version which was powered by 4/.46 sized ducted fans. The earlier one was the product of Butch and Lynn McCaully and was at least 8-10 years old when it died a spectacular death a week before the Southwest Fan Fly a few years ago. At the time it hadn't been flown for several years and Lynn wanted to test it before taking it to the SWFF, and it succombed to a faulty receiver switch.
The version you saw in the picture has not flown, to my knowlege. The last I heard, it was waiting on someone to donate 4 turbines. Think TJT might be interested?

I have just had a word with Mr Kranz who was not able to give me any more detail on the U2 other than that it is absolutely true to scale, all glass and the dimensions as given earlier, He cannot speak any English and does not have any brochures etc.
He is not going to the Expo in Stuttgart either (too busy). It must be a good product if he does not have to advertise, has no internet site and is not going to the expo, good models seem to sell themselves. I will put a note in the German forum and see what happens.

Johnny, re-Hustler x4 turbines.... Not to sure about TJT donating engines : )
The Hustler may be more easy on the wallet if consideration is given to a twin turbine set-up! with the two outer nacelles as dummies?
Although 4xMW54's would be pretty special...

I saw in RCJI a year or so ago someone in the UK was acting as a go between. He would drive to Werner's place and bring them to the UK for shipping. I think it was the issue with the A-7 kit review. Anyone remember who?

I would be very interested in getting my hands on a fuse. I had a Knights of the Air kit and wasn't very impressed with the quality of the kit. After many hours of fixing the kit I was able to fly it with some success.
There is an American company that is getting ready to produce a kit at http://www.jensenjetmodels.com/id28.htm They don't have an introduction date yet.
Please keep us posted on progress of getting a fuse.

Sorry for the delayed reply! I've actually been trying to work this week.
The airplane I flew for the movie had a 14' span and was JetCat P-120 powered. The airplane flew Awesome right until they blew it up!!!
The owner of the molds is local and may have interst in selling them if enough of you guys are interested. The molds are fuse only with conventional wings and stabs. No scale provisions for landing gear were made, so it will take some work.
I'd love to see Matt covered in resin!!

Hi guys, I'm new to RCU but here's a picture of the U2 built from the Butch Sickels kit. Despite it being too heavy at 30 lbs it flies pretty well, David Hudson even lets me fly it!

Do a search for DCU for Dave.
It really is a nice flying model and I hope to put a turbine in it eventually. It has flaps, retracts (the pogos drop off on retraction), and fuse mounted speed brakes (what was I thinking?)

I have one of the few "kits" that Butch made waiting to be built. It'll be on the board as soon as my F-18 flies. I have a RAM 750 waiting to go in. I will be designing formers, etc in the mean time.

One thing I'm currently pondering is retracts for a bird this size. I plan on building mine around the 25 lb mark. Since it has a single main gear that would handle the landing load, that retract would have to be as strong as one on a 50 lb plane - except that this thing should be landing a heck of a lot slower than most. Suggestions?
Also, there's another user here that's Building a big U-2. Jack ( Vortex00 ) is building a old-school U-2C type model. He just sent me this pic.

I'd use a sail plane retract. The are desiged for CL mounting and some of the better ones have shocks built in. Good luck building your Duce. I saw one of Butch's fly on DF and it was a show stopper. Ram 750 would be too much. An 500 would be more than enough --residual thrust would be less as well.
One caution, the real U-2 is very cross-wind limited (15 kts). The model I saw hit a runway light and was damaged trying to land in cross winds.

Sailplane retracts aren't good for this plane. I have a 4m sailpane with a retract. It weighs 10 lbs. Even the bigger ones aren't designed for planes much over 20 lbs. Just as important, it wouldn't look even near scale. I need an oleo strut with a dual wheel bogey. I'm just wondering which retract units are up to the job. Hopefully the guys who have already flown one of these will speak up.
As for the RAM - it's bought, paid for, & going in. 17 lbs thrust on a 25 lb airplane isn't rediculous - it'll allow for scale climbouts. Plus if there's too much idle thrust, I'll just dead stick it.

We used spring air retract for the main. Paul made the tail wheel.The ram will be perfect for the U-2 . You will love the way it fly's. Just a reminder, The plane will not fly until the tail wheel comes off the ground. It lands great because of ground affect.Call if you need other info. Butch

I think the RAM 750 will work out just fine, though you may very well have to shut it down to land. And Mike is right the model doesn't do well in strong crosswinds after all its a taildragger with a fairly small rudder and centerline gear. Even with those limitations it looks great in the air.
