I just picked up a old Kyosho f-86. I know it had lots of problems but i am one that likes a challenge. Any way i have an engine that will spin the fan easily, my question is how did all you old guys measure the rpm of the engine/fan setup. I was thinking of painting one blade white but not sure if will get and accurate reading.
Also does anyone know the rpm limit of the fan in that kit. i will be installing a OS TZ turbo engine that will really spin it up.

Hi airraptor
I painted just the spinner cone on my Dynamax fan unit and stuck a tach in the intake opening. It works great. I eventually put a sensor on the plane itself and had a cable plug into my tach.

PS. Not all DF pilots are old. I'm 24, but have flown them for the past 6 years. LOL.

I had one of those and it is hanging up in a garage now. I loved this plane , it helped me to get ready for my bigger planes.
I had 219 flights on mine before the pull chord broke and then I moved on to my BVM Bandit.
This plane to fly well, needs a big hole cut in the bottom of the wing just in front of the fan unit , this is a must because all of the other holes still will not let enough smooth air to reach the blades.
I had a .18 engine running on 40% nitro, this setup I topped out a 62 milles per hour. I also install a plastic thrust tube to help guide the air out the back of the plane. I install light weight wheels and spead them apart to lower the back end to help with the takeoff. On takeoff, go for air speed first not altitude before you make a turn, after she gets going then let her rip.
Good luck

t33 what 18 did you run on it? will the fan handle 30,000 plus rpm? what was the stock motors rpm on the fan? i am thinking of putting retracks in it and doing a intake to the fan and exit aswell. not really looking for speed at all but the cool ness of a small DF

I have done 12 of these F-86s with both glow ducting kits and stream lined fuel tanks behind the motor, and electric. For glow I used the Trinity Picco (TP125, P15) and the Fantom FR .18 (Fan0124), I cut down the aluminum heads and added a head cowling.
I'm not sure what they have now in that size motor. I will look for some photos and post later.

I am going to run an OS.18 tz rear exhaust with pull start. I will have my engine guy work on it some to get some more out of it. i thinking about doing a intake duct for it too.
Also is there any starting wands still available that i can use for this. i would really like to get rid of the pull start. i am doing everything i can on the engine too. like cutting down needle valve and carb going to make a fiberglass cowl to go around carb and base of engine. going to run a plastic thrust tube and work on sizing to get most out of it.

Ok i ran the fan today with the OS 18. stock header that came with kit no pipe got 24,400 rpm, added pipe (stock) got 25,500-25,600.
then open exhaust no header or pipe and got 26,117 rpm. So it looks like the stock header is really holding it back as we thought. i will clean the header up tonight to see if can get more out of it. i will also order a regular header for LA 15s and try some car ones. i think with some work should get 26,500-27,000 out of it. If still need more then can always jump up to a stronger 18.
