I really do think you guys are on to something here. There should be an area on RCU where scammers can be listed, as a "heads-up" for everyone.

Fudge that is sad! I only once sent money through pay-pal on ebay for a set of darts and did not get the darts! They did everything they could to get my money back and couldnt. But we are talking less then fifty bucks here, But it does stay with you when you Ebay, I really slowed down on buying there after that! But your kind of lost is what we do not want here on RCU! I know that was ebay and they have thier own demons but here we want to stop this kind of thing all together. Allot of the guys that flew with Shirley had no idea he was such a scumbag now they know. I am sure if they deal with him there will be some stop signs in place making sure they get item or money in hand before deal is done if they even deal with him at all! I sure know I would not deal with him ever! That is theft what he did, Tell me would you feel any comfort if he was at an event that you were in the pit next to yours? I would be a nervous wreck knowing what he had done! I think his wrong doing here on RCU is over but Shirley has sisters out there that we now have to stop as he was!

RE: Does anyone know David swantz

I am glad to see you got your money back, but isn't this like the cop letting a bank robber off just because he gave the money back.
NOT GOING TO HAPPEN...We are talking grand larceny here.

hairy46 01-07-2011 11:49 AM

RE: Does anyone know David swantz

I to think Shirley should be reported to the police and his probation officer! I do not think he even got a slap on the wrist yet, He is out nothing in money because the money was not his in the first place! The only thing he has lost is his respect from others and he does not seem like the type that could care less about that!

Fudge 01-07-2011 11:55 AM

RE: Does anyone know David swantz

Well I agree to, I wish we as a site can try to stop these kind of people before it happens, IDK how, but it would be nice, and scumbags should pay for their crimes, not just returning the stolen property, because that's not any kind of punishment.

We still have a known issue to work on here. Joe C.'s problem goes back a few years, and most states have a 5 or 6 year Statute of Limitations for collecting debts. But this pilot doesn't have any limiting statutes. It doesn't really matter to me how long it has been. As far as I'm concerned, a scam is a SCAM and never goes away.

Luckyy offered to share additional info with Joe C. to help him either get his stuff, receive equivalent $$$$'s, or to alert the authorities.

C'mon Joe - let us know where you are with this! Have you contacted Luckyy yet? We need to keep the prop spinning (I know, bad pun... but it was a Cessna) and keep continuous pressure on this con man until he makes it right with Joe.

We need an accurate list of items posted here. Dave needs a memory jog as to what he owes you. He's probably got so many swindles swirling around in his head he can't remember the details any more! Give him a break with a list of items and dollar value.

I have bought 3 things on RCU from individuals not stores, a brand new Saito 100, it came in the box still wrapped. An used JR receiver, the guy insured at his cost and e mailed me one month later to ask me if I was satisfied, and an used Funtana S, I went for local pick up and h shaved $50 of the advertisied price which was already good.
Needless to say I am very happy with the market here, I think most of us are decent honest people trying to swap things and enjoy our hobby.
But whenever there is a group of 10 people or more there always going to be bad apples. We and RCU just have to be cautious and try to keep this site as clean as we can

Well I gotta say you are right, I've done over 80 deals on here, and most of them good, but you don't hear about the good deals, but all the scams, get most of the publicity, which in turn give the market place a bad name!

I have said on here all my dealings have been great, The shipping folks not so good! I have made countless friends that we keep intouch by phone. RCU has been a great place for me. And that should be said so that new folks comming on here for the first time know that it is 99% great people on here, But that said they also need to know that there are a few scammers on here and be aware and if scammed let RCU know right away! We are I reckon watching one anothers back, Luckyy I am glad has his money back, How would you eat 5200.00 and be able to sleep at night? Who knows if Shirley had been allowed to keep this scam going he may have scammed the wrong person and his scamming days would have ended much diffrent! For some 5 grand is everything! He in some ways is lucky that he was stopped before that happend, Should he spend time for it and what he has done? I say heck YES!

Joe, thanks for the itemized list. Now, can you place a dollar figure on all of the items you shipped to Dave? In other words, how much will it take in $$'s to make this right? You may be willing after this length of time to accept less than your total investment to let him off the hook, OR NOT! It's your call...

In all fairness, Dave needs to be provided with a dollar figure (or the return of everything + $1500 + prepaid shipping) you'll accept to make this right with you. Understand, I'm not advocating any sort of a break here. I'm just thinking the man may have forgotten the details after this length of time!

Luckyy, how 'bout changing the title of this thread per my suggestion on Pg. 10?? I think you or the moderator are the only two who can do that!

As another local to the scammer, Can anyone PM me with what clubs this guy is a member of? I surely don't want to be on the flightline by him. Failure to defend himself and sending out a $5200 MO is as good of admission of guilty as I need!! If he is a member of my club I will make sure the club officers see this post and petition for his removal unless he makes right by ALL the people he scammed AND makes a goodwill move (AMA or club donation, etc) or similar. Honestly I think a petition to AMA to have his membership revoked would be a good idea to keep him away from us in person and affiliation..... anyway as he can always show up as a guest and be within reach of my stuff if he has a AMA card...I'll sign. You think someone like this has the guts to call the fire dept and take blame if he flies a turbine into a schoolbus or do you think he'd sneak away?? I don't want to be grouped with people like him by association. Anyone know if the DVP is a RCU member or his username? Anyone else willing to sign a petition to keep this guy away from our hobby? Feel free to PM me if your response might get this post banned...It needs to stay up!!!! Todd

RE: Does anyone know David swantz

NO IT DOES NOT... read another post above.. I don't know how that guy got beat out of a payment and the merchandise, but I know that I have been beat out of the money that was owed to me. PAYPAL does not help you out when there are problems... they really just let you settle it between yourselves... I do not use Paypal unless it is with an established business and I NEVER sell to some outside the continental US (CONUS) never ever. No APO etc. It is hard to prove delivery unless you demand a signature... most delivery services allow you to do that. It may cost more.

Paypal is not an escrow service and they do not protect you.

ORIGINAL: lopflyers

Oh wow, that is why paypal is good, it kinds of protect everybody in the transaction. Kind off because cons can scam you anyways if they persist enough.
I was almost scam at ebay selling an i phone. When I went to the post office the postman told me not to send anything to Nigeria, they steal from everybody.
RCU should be more vigilant of this so they can make this web site safer

I would say App $3500. I would take whatever he can give back, the cash and engine would be nice to have back.

Yes I have talked with Bill, I plan on calling him again, and no Dave S has never called me back on any message I left either by phone or email.

No you are right, I would not trust him at the same event! A person that will do what he has done is not to be trusted, Scamming you out of your money is just another way of saying stealing from you! I was at a dart tournament one time and saw a guy grab the girlfriends dartcase off the table. I told him to put it back and he said that he thought it was his! I showed him her name on it, An hour later I saw this guy with a case in his hand and that it was a small metal case hers was a big red case, I asked him if that was his case and he said yes, I said its sure looks like the one that you tried to take an hour ago, Then he realize who I was! I told everyone to watch their stuff around him and what he tried to do! He left, Scumbag!

Good to read that there was a happy ending to all this, provided there wasn't any check fraud either. I've been pretty lucky on the scam front, only happened to me once when I bought a CD burner many years ago that turned out to be a standard CD-ROM drive. eBay wasn't much help, but I was able to recover my money and then some in a roundabout fashion by selling the drive rails the scammer left on the drive, as they were worth a lot at the time, I think $50 a pair.

A friend of mine lost something like $10,000 to a scammer over a car sale. They never did catch the guy either.

Glad to see things have worked out for luckyy & hopefully for JoeC as well. As lopflyers said

Needless to say I am very happy with the market here, I think most of us are decent honest people trying to swap things and enjoy our hobby.
Unfortunately I think because we all share a common interest we think all people in the hobby are as honest as we are.

I had some old plans years ago, probably 30 or so of small models so I made a post with an email address & posted the plans off at the same time as flyers sent me cash in envelopes (the small amounts weren't worth cheques or money orders) & I'm happy to say I recieved all the cash & everyone recieved & was happy with their plans. I didn't recieve one payment ($40) & when I let the buyer know after a month he just sent another $40 cash, no questions asked. Eventually his $40 made it back to him, It never made it out of the US, a USPS blunder.

A little trust goes a long way but I'm sorry to say there will always be that 1% who betrays that trust.

But, the odds of 99 to 1 look pretty good to me. :D - John.

There are less than 1% of the population that are murderers...Should we just let them go free and not worry about it? Its been said 10%of the population commits 75% of the crime.. A lock will keep honest people out...The idea of punishment will keep out half of the remainder, The others unfortunately will do what they can to us as long as we allow. Todd

Boomerang1 01-07-2011 05:40 PM

RE: Does anyone know David swantz

Todd, not saying let the 1% off scott free, hang em high!

I tend to take people on face value until proven otherwise and 99% of them are good people, fortunately. - John.

Thats mostly false. I use paypal for most of my online dealings and pay through my credit card. Since 2001 I've run across a few less than honest sellers on _bay and after waiting the required amount of time, it was a simple phone call to the cc company and I was credited the full amount. How discover and paypal works that out is not my problem.

I would NEVER use my bank account to pay for ANYTHING online. Not enough recourse if a deal falls through.

see you didn't make your claim thought paypal though, I did, and got screwed over my them (well actually the buyer made a claim through his credit card company and I got screwed by paypal)
So the credit card companies help, not paypal.

RE: Does anyone know David swantz

EXACTOMUNDO! Paypal almost forces you to link a bank account to your paypal service... when I disconnected that and only used a credit card... they hounded me for a while... I have not lost any money to a paypal scam for a while.

Open your eyes.... 3 good references is easy to fake and not enough for me to buy from them.... also 10,000 good references and a couple of bad ones does not prevent my order from a company.

The ball bounces up and down... I prefer to pay with a Postal Money order because that is postal fraud and they will go after that...

Most of all, I really don't make large purchases from individuals. If I do, it is a public meeting space. I have read about some problems with that too! People being robbed of the cash or merchandise. They are calling it "robbery by appointment"
