Another great day with the Vampire, fast becoming a favourite. I added a JR 420T gyro to the rudders and in gusty/windy conditions today the Vampire is much more solid. Plenty of nice comments today and the Vampire was voted 2nd by the judges at our UK Top Gun event today. Landings in 20mph+ winds are no problem using full flap.
Although the P-120 is way too much power for normal flying, to fly at a scale speed the thrust is needed to drive the Vampire on the climbing manoeuvres. Dw |

Dave,
Those are some nice shots off your Vampire, sun looks good on those wings. I am also setting up a gyro on my Vampire, haven't flown it yet since install, any recommendation on the starting point for the gain? Jim |
RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
Jim
Yes, the guys did a good job-again! It's a manual gain gyro, set by a pot. I mounted it on the flat nose wheel steering servo plate. I have it set so that with the model on its wheels I swing the nose left and right around 6" and the rudders move around 1/4" each way. This was a guess and worked out fine. Regards Dave |

Another great day with the Vampire, very light cross wind today at Chalgrove made quite a change from my last session at Merryfield where it blew a gale!
Bring on CJ Dw |

i received the second vampire one month ago..
many improvements than previous one and finally the paint is "true" aluminium....;);) |
RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
Hi Dave,
Have been following this thread closely, I am building a Vampire at the moment. Did you tie the gyro into your nose wheel steering as well as the rudders, or was it not necessary? Cheers |
RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
Warwick
No, I didn't link it to the nose steering and it tracks really straight as it is. In calmer conditions it did not really need the rudder gyro, but any wind or rough air and it shock its booty ;) Dave |

RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
I took some video od Dave's VAmpire on Sunday and once I have discovered how to get it off the DV tape and onto the web I will post. Anyone got a good method as my laptop does not have firewire ports.

RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
All,
Had to dig out my old laptop with a Firewire port so quality is not that good but here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgWtq5oR9Qo Trevor Skedge. |
RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
Trevy, good job as usual with the camera. Flight was the first of the day and I had forgotten how little power is required for near scale flying...and how to land with fuel onboard! For me the flight was too fast at the beginning, and that was probably mid stick on the throttle on all the horizontal passes. The Vampire is such a clean design and Sunday was flat calm, so there was little to slow it down. The loop I opened the airbrakes fully at the top (ninty degrees) and shut the throttle completely and you can see how much energy it still carries on the down line! Only time the throttle was fully open was on the long climbs and the beginning of the loop. The fuel tanks allow 12 minutes+ flown like this, so still quite a lot of fuel left to get it under 10 mins for the video.
Really like the model though. Dw |

RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
Greetings Gentlemen
I observed Jim Hiller flying his Vampire at the WJM and was very impressed. A few questions please. How much does the aircraft weigh dry? Can it get under the 13.5 kg limit for WJM competition. How scale is the aircraft ( profile / surface detailing ) ? TIA Dean W. |
RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
Dean
At this time I think you would struggle, but DJ are working on the weight and the latest kits I have had are lighter than mine, also new Turbines like the 100RX and others will help reduce ballast. I have a friend building one for the 100RX, will weigh it when it's finished. Outline looks really good from the books I have looked at. It's on my list of possibles for Switzerland Dave |

ORIGINAL: Helijet Greetings Gentlemen I observed Jim Hiller flying his Vampire at the WJM and was very impressed. A few questions please. How much does the aircraft weigh dry? Can it get under the 13.5 kg limit for WJM competition. How scale is the aircraft ( profile / surface detailing ) ? TIA Dean W. The weight built properly should be no more than 28 lbs., that works. I have the original four dimension line drawings that Derjet used to build the plug the and the molds, the kit is correct to the A/C and the line drawings. I also aquired a detailed instrument panel with lighted instruments, nav lights, elivator bob weigths, sliding canopy and scale pilot. I have all the above for sale. Chuck |
RE: DerJet DH Vampire build thread-
Thank you David and Chuck for all the great info. I am really taken by this bird but it needs to get below that 13.5 kg limit. There is a full size mark 3 just a 3 hour drive away so documentation should not be too difficult. I will research this subject a bit more!
Cheers Dean W. |
