RE: Comp ARF Flash update

I have the wren pipe and it works great. I substituted a smaller pointed clunk (glow clunk) for the large diameter one that CARF supplied and that has eliminated any UAT "going dry" problems in my flash!

Hi

did you keep the crf bellmouth with the Wren pipe as at first glance it will set the start of the pipe too far from the end of the turbine?

Regards

David

I'll take a picture on my install and post it here later today

Here are the pics as promised.. the SS is a great engine...the black ring at the front of the turbine cover is a motorcycle innertube section, holds it all in just fine

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

I forgot, I did trim some SS off of the end if the tailpipe using a scissors once I got it all installed

Thanks for that geh3

The main difference being that I wont have the bypass now, but your pipe seems to work well when mounted in the carbon funnel by the look of your installation.

Curing the tank moulding in the oven at pesent and will fit it all together come the end of the week

Thanks again

David

Ok using this engine and the Wren pipe enabeled my Flash to come out light and I can do some neat low speed aerobatics and still have quite good verticals, a good combination

Here are some PICS of my FLAP mods... allows super slow landings on grass fields. NOTHING protrudes up on the upper wing surface so I get more lift and drag than with the originals!

Hi
thats a flap mod !

Mine have the top part which normally protrude above the wing cemented into the wing and the remainder is as original.

Did you cut the bottom half of the wing away? What did you hinge it to ?

Looks effective thats for sure.

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

Well after numerous pins breaking in my LG units the hingeline on one of my original flaps failed due to being struck by the departing Lg strut. I concluded that this would be difficult to repair and I was not happy with the performance of the original flaps anyway as they seemed to kill lift and not provide enough drag. SO I cut both of them away ( gasp ) and cut the top 1/2 off cleanly and fabricated two 1/4" aircraft ply ribs. One rib is glued to the wing root and the other to the rear wing spar to form an area for attaching the top piece and also to provide a hinge mount . I then attached the tops in exactly the same position as they were originally with BVM epoxy. If you look at my wing from the top it looks original except for the epoxy in the former gap lines!. Then I fabricated the flaps from aircraft ply 3/32 I think. I installed a 1/8 CF rod across the space on the bottom to act as a hinge with both ends buried in the previouely installed 1/4" ribs. Then I glued the front edge of the new flaps to this rod again with bvm epoxy. The rest was just a matter of relocating the servo output arm like the aileron ones and installing linkage. These work like a dream... providing plenty of drag and lift depending in the angle of deflection. Now I can slow WAY down and float to a landing without breaking pins etc...

Hi Gh3s
I finished the job this weekend and here are some not very good photos of he finished article. I also fitted ( from a good friend or two's advice) a white clunk as used in the Sim jet range..This clunk picks up every last drop like a Hoover apparently and now sits nicely in the bottom of the fuel sump. If the tank joint is leak free then I have solved my problems I think.

Interesting see how the next flight goes.

Bye and thank you

David

looks good

should provide some longer flight time as well!!!

The stab "hold down" blocks are made of balsa and most likely the wing hold down blocks are the same way. Should I be worried about this?

David,

I have 55 flights on mine which includes some very violent snaps both upright and inverted and I haven't had an issue.

Geoff.

Over 100 flights. 60+ with a Merlin and 40+ with a Titan (both turned up all the way). No problems with wing or stab hold downs, no problems with original flaps, no problems with original main and wing tanks (8-9 minute flight times),no extra vents (Comp ARF pipe/no bypass). The ONLY mod is 8mm heat treated pins in the mains (they do not break even with an occasional landing at +3'AGL). No need to re-engineer a great airplane unless you have extra time on your hands. I pre-flight, charge, top off fuel, smoke oil, air, propane and fly. Remove the wing every 20 or so flights to check things out then do it again. 3 or 4 other Flash pilots I fly with do the same thing.

Also, just changed from R2000 to a AR9000 Spektum this week and after 4 flights I'm liking it alot. I tested the system in some other aircraft first after a bad experiance with 2.4 a few months back. The AR9000 with the 10X module is solid as a rock!

This plane is built tough and FAST. No problems on mine.

Hammer...you talking about me...yeah...we been flying 'em hard and lovin 'em.

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

I've heard some guys talk about uncontrolable pitch-up (almost non-recoverable) when the flaps are deployed. What's up with that? Other guys say no problem... Is it CG, speed, or what?

NICLAS 09-12-2007 05:09 AM

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

If you have the CG to far back then the plane can suddenly drop the nose when the speed is getting in between slow and slower. With the flaps fully lowered.I´ll have mine on the front part of the recomended. And with that CG it´s safe.,

No issues with mine after 50 plus flghts with P80 ,inc snaps etc (thanks geoff! great fun):D
no issues with heat damage to stab, forget the full flap unless you have short field problems the thick wing it slows down well anyway, all round great model ,i am getting another ,worth fitting jet a1 retracts then you don,t even need to replace the pins!

HAMMERDOWN

What you can say about TITAN + Flash....is a great combo??
And the top speedy?

I am thinking in this one or a P120 in a Bandit ARF....

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

Are you flying from grass or a nice paved surface? the &%*&%*%original pins break easily on grass fields
jeta1 training links are a definite improvement. The only reason I changed my flap design was because one of the molded in hinges on my original flaps failed due to the hit that flap took when the strut parted company with the main LG mechanics so I had to do something! With the split flaps that I have, the plane lands much slower though. If I ever had to get another flash, I would use trailing links and leave the flaps alone... I only have access to grass fields and some of them are not that smooth.

Does any one in here know which are would fit the Os .40 La and what is the easiest and low priced arf ever to build because this will be my first arf that im building?

Thanks!

pm me if you want.
