RE: Comp ARF Flash update

I have built 3 Flashs now and used the Behotec gear in one and Jet 1A in the others. I had to grind a little out between the mounting rails even for the Behotec gear so I guess they are not "Drop In" either. Other than making the opening for the trailing link struts a little bigger, the Jet 1A fit as easy as the Behotec. I opened the mounting rails up enough to make the wheels fit into the wheel openings with NO grinding there. Doing that also lessens the amount of the strut opening. It MIGHT be 1/8" at the most!

I highly recommend the Jet1A gear for anything that flies off grass! (Can I say that?) No matter how much work it is to install them it will be worth it in the long run!

That's right Rob - did it at Ewe Farm. I was guessing you have flown yours out of there? If you haven't, there is loads of space.

Mart1 - I used take off and landing flap all as manual spec, all worked great!

Chris

There are several Flash models flying with the P80, Trevor Skedge gets 10-11 minutes with the wing tank.

For Grass use I have AT legs fitted as shown earlier in the post, these use the stock gear and wheels etc. Only the main legs are changed for trailing link.

I have around 30 grass flights and 50 hard surface flights with these fitted.

Thanks Dave. I will plumb the wing tank in and use it I think.

Are there any modifications that need making to the wells etc or are these 'drop in' replacements?

Chris

Has anyone tried using BVM Bandit struts and retracts in the Flash?

Can anyone give me some tips on fitting the inlet joiner?

At first it would not fit over the inlets but now, after shaving a bit off the outside of the inlets, it is ok.

However, when I put the upper bypass and inlet joiner in it doesn't quite line up. To get it near I have to move the joiner down at the bypass end and this causes the top front to be very close to coming off the top of the inlet. Also, it looks like I will have to cut quite a lot off of the back of the joiner (about 1 inch). Is this normal?

I had mine on and made the mistake of not trial fitting the wing on before it cured. It was about 1/2" too tight. I had to cut a large section out of it and fabricate a new curve for it to work. After all that, I ended up taking out the bypass anyway. Living in Phoenix is too hot to fully bypass comfortably. You are not alone, but these things are never going to be perfect. See if you really need to use a bypass. Mine flew great without and a P80.

Enjoy!

You can contact Andy Kane at Comp ARF for first rate service. I ordered an all white one from him yesterday. The wing tanks are on backorder however.

I've ordered thru Andy before. He's pretty good. I was hoping to catch someone with a used flash and turbine for sale and to see if anyone made retracts for the flash other than comp arf in case I went with a new one...

I've read through this entire thread and there's not much info about using different brands of retracts. I've got a set of Bandit retracts and struts that I'm gonna try to make work.

I considered this too Joel, but the stock system with the recommended gear is really clean. Done according to plans with the strut "tubs", the wing is nearly completely sealed from the airflow.

If you start cutting holes in the wing you run the risk of the high speed airflow (200mph) pressurizing the wing and/or peeling back the skin. That was the main reason I went with the stock gear in spite of the fact that I had other options in the shop.

The stock gear has worked out well too.

Chris

Sorry, busy moving the business across town and don't get much RCU time!

You have to trim the wing as shown in my photos.
I've not had or expecting any issues with the opening needed, it's all on the LE side of the wheel well/leg opening.
While I'm here our contact number changes from the 1st August to 01923 270405...thanks to BT![>:]

Not a bad price to customize the paint scheme...Did you buy through Darcy? I guess he is way out of town for a while..?

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

Darcy took care of me. He is still working for Comp Arf and answers his email.

I finally maidened my Flash yesterday. I put 2 flights on it. The first flight was 5 minutes, I only used the wing tank and 1" of the main tank. The second flight was 7 minutes and I used about 1/3 of the main tank. I don't think 10 minute flights will be out of the question. My P-120SE ran perfect. The only change that I have to make to the model is to up the expo on the ailerons, I like the roll rate but it was a little sensitive around neutral.

Nice Tony! I definitely want to see this fly. It's been crazy since closing on the house. But I want to get back to flying soon. Congrats on the successful maiden. I can't wait to see it in the air.

Hi
Our Hawk Turbine company Jets.
Performance, more than enough...
We only have the 2,1 liter fuel cell in the fuselage, timer on 8 flying minutes and almost half of fuel left after landing...
