Rudder hinged tonight.
Decided to do the nose former and leg next so I can see which side I need to put the rudder servo. I am running out of channels on my 9CAP  Paul |
RE: Fox Composites Hawk kit
No pics tonight, spent the time sorting out servo directions with the Y lead for Rudder and nose leg installation. Should have the unit in tomorrow so more pics then [8D] Paul |

Tonight was spent making up the nose leg mount and servo cradle.
The former is supplied but the other bits of wood work i have made. Just need to get the support fitted for the arm now and i shall fit the nose leg assy into the plane. I have used 101 HD Springair 100 deg nose unit so the former will be angled backwards. ;) |

Started on the elevator setup. Pics show marking for the cutout in the fin base. The cut out. The elevator actuation system with bearings. Elevator servo with metal arm installed in the mount (supplied) Had 1st problem tonight, had to reduce the length of the elevator drive arm on the silver mount by 5mm to stop clashing. I have reported this back to Fox Composites. More posts tomorrow.;) |
RE: Fox Composites Hawk kit
is there anybody out there?
|
RE: Fox Composites Hawk kit
yep, we're just all sat here awe-struck ( and jealous!):D
Just curious why Trevor decided against the MW44 installation? |

Good i was beginning to think I was on my own [X(] Trev had an original 44 with 7lbs of thrust, it would have flown OK but when he tried to test fly it was off grass. The grass was soaking wet, mud everywhere. To put it in Trevs words 'the plane weighed more at the end of the take off attempt cause of the mud all over it.!' So it was not truly a fair trial but Trev being Trev...in went the P60, because he wanted to be able to fly in any conditions anywhere [:-] I think it is fair to say that with a standard early 44 this is a tarmac or very good grass strip model. This may change as Jim continues to work on bringing down the weight. (it is not that heavey now) I expect a weight of around 11lbs or maybe lighter  With the 44 Gold (mine is one of the latest ones and gives over 11lbs;)) the model should have a great performance, with a similar power to weight as with the P60. I hope that when Trev and I meet next I will have this baby finished and we can compare performance. |

J.F.
Paul is correct in all that he says and I am sure the performance would be fine off tarmac with the 7lb MW77 but I wanted it to fly from my Grass strip aswell so in went the P60. Pauls is going to be great with his latest motor and the upside to me fitting the P60 means we know it is good for both motors. "I hope that when Trev and I meet next I will have this baby finished and we can compare performance." Fighting talk, game on [8D] Trevor Skedge. |

Ok 7 hours today...[X(]
Post 1 (pic 1) Elevator servo fitted and tested with linkage (pic 2) Had to file some 5 mm off the bottom edge of the elevator pivot unit. On full up it touched the bypass duct (test fitted) Fox Comp have been informed. Minor problem really. (pic3) Test fitting of Tail plane halves with fin off to check for clear movement. (pic4) A small section of the underside of the fin needs to be cut away to clear elevator pushrod. (pic5) shows cut away. |

(pic1) Rudder servo fitted, this is upside down due to my lack of channels and directions etc. Cable tied back to avoid elevator mechanism. (pic2) Shows extension lead connections, I secure these with fishing line. (pic3) shows fin fitted and bolted in place. The bolt is a cap head and is secured from inside the fuselage. In the event of a problem with links or servos the fin can be removed in the future. (pic4) is a longer shot showing the rear end almost complete. I have not glued the tail plane halves yet as i find they get in the way during the next stages so i will glue them later. The elevator unit feels really solid and slop free. I am using Non Balanced tail plane halves out of choice; I do not believe that it is necessary with this mechanism. If i am right them Fox Comp will not have to balance them in the future. This will be a great weight saving and being so far back will help to prevent need for nose weight. [sm=wink_smile.gif] More tomorrow. Paul |

Not much today chaps.
Had to go flying today:eek: Test flew a friends Eurofighter (very nice). Also a bit knackered.[sm=sleeping.gif] Anyway did a sort out and prepared for tomorrow night. Pic shows bypass air tube supplied with the kit and the Wren tailpipe (excellent). The tailpipe is slightly over length and I will cut down. So with a bit of luck it will be engine and tailpipe in tomorrow.:D Bye for now. Paul |

Hi all
Not quite as much done tonight, got home had food, fell asleep  But did get a bit done. Pic 1and 2 shows the epoxy tube supplied fitted, this is for the servo leads. Ali. Tape wrapped around exposed areas. Pic 3 shows the Wren pipe I had was 104mm over length, I did not know the proper length so ordered a 'long one'. Pic4 shows bypass duct trial fitted Pic 5 Shows Wren pipe in bypass for trial fit. Tomorrow I will fit all of this permanently and maybe the turbine! :D |
RE: Fox Composites Hawk kit
Silly question, but what is the requirement for the large epoxy tube (assuming its just a bypass)? Do you think this will add any benefits?
Doesn't appear to be much "open space" for airflow through the fuz (i.e like the savexL39 and f16) do you envisage any probs? Keep the pics coming, i like these online manuals! J |
RE: Fox Composites Hawk kit
Paul,
In light of the comment from J.F. re the by-pass air, I will take a pic later of my pipe install which allows more air past. The epoxey turbine mounts that are ready fitted to the fuselage are a nice touch and I found them accurate for both the MW44 and P60. Regards Trevor Skedge. |
RE: Fox Composites Hawk kit
In the L39 by keeping the fuselage free of formers etc. the fus acted as a sort of bypass.
In the Hawk we have a lot of formers and other items that will be in the bypass flow causing drag. This tube acts as a forced bypass; suction is created at the rear, which draws air through the gap. This gives forced cooling of the tailpipe. Paul |

Ok tonight’s efforts. Post 1
Almost got the engine in but that will be tomorrow now.[8D] Pic 1 and 2 shows the tailpipe in place with the 10mm gap set. Pic 3 shows 4 holes made in the back of the tailpipe to accommodate spacers. Pic4 shows 4 10mm spacers and short screws. The spacers are hollow and filled with epoxy. They are then slid into position and the screw placed through the tube hole and into the epoxy. See pic 5, which shows it in position while epoxy sets. The spacers are not screwed to the inner tailpipe so the pipe can move with expansion. The tape is removed afterwards. |

Pic 1 shows the Wren 44 Gold and the alignment spacer I have made. Pic 2 shows the spacer and dims. Pic 3 shows how the spacer 'plugs' into the tailpipe, self-aligning. Pic 4 shows the glue I am using for the engine mount plates. Great stuff from Colchester models. Seems to glue anything to anything! ;) Pic 5 1st engine plate fitted with fuel cell in place to get a good position. Pic 6 both plates in place with both tanks. The tanks can be removed afterwards. Well it is moving on now and I may (only may) have it ready to fly this weekend, but we shall see  See you tomorrow Paul |

RE: Fox Composites Hawk kit
Hi all
Can anyone help please. I have an L 1011 Tristar kit by Pat Mcurry in the states but the phenolic tubes and main spar are missing. I understand that Pat is no longer trading and would appreciate if anyone can tell me the sizes and possible source for these items. Kind regards Rob Bloor |
