Hello Kelly.

The Stingray is very fast, but you need to fly a low approach i order to slow it down. The landing speed of the model also depends on the idle thrust of your turbine. That can be individual as well. It was a bit windy this past weekend in DK, so i guess that helped too. When the speed brake was deployed, I needed to add some up-elevator to compensate.

Good luck with your Stingray.

Well, how are you Stingray builders getting along. Has any one flown their models?

I have 20 flights on mine now. Doing some repairs on it, because I slowed the model to much down for landing. It stalled and went in to the grass field short of the runway. Nose broke off. No big deal. Will be out again next weekend.

Stig, What was your final dry weight? Mine will fly this weekend at Madras. I have been slacking on the thread because I have been very busy lately getting this ready. Here is a pic just out of the paint booth, I have not taken any since it has been finished.

WOW Chris.

You Stingray looks really great. You have done a great paintjob.

The dry weight of my Stingray is 12 pounds.

Stig, Nice to hear that your speed brake didn't roll you. Since earlier in the thread, it seemed like the experience of one person reporting a roll affect meant that they all would roll, I hope your experience neutralizes that. Very nice looking bird, Sir.

Hey Shaun.

No problem with the speedbrake. Actually I have to ad some power on my SimJet 1200 to keep the plane in the air with the speedbrake deployed, so I would not recommend doing any extra speedbrakes. It is just perfect the way it is.

One just has to keep in mind, that the plane is fairly small but it has a faily high wingloading, so keep up that speed. You don't want to slow the model down too much and stall it. That's what happened to me on a day with no winds.

Hi Stig,

Would you mind posting a photo of the hardware inside your fuselage? I'm working out the placement of my ECU, batteries, etc tonight and I'd like to see how you installed everything. Funny, it seemed like there was lots of room in my fuse a couple hours ago...

Its good to hear you didn't need a 2nd speedbrake. I've been delaying any radical changes until a few more opinions were made public... Being a modified delta wing, we should be able to raise the nose a few degrees and induce a healthy ammount of additional drag.

Thx,
Kelly

Sorry Kelly.

At the moment I don't have any good pics of my installation. I have both the receiver bat and the ECU bat close to the fuel tanks. ECU and reciever are placed on top of the cockpit plate, and the fuel pump/valve are on the bottom side. At first I had the reciever bat in the nose of the model, but that made it slightly noseheavy.

Good luck

Chris...

Hey Chris, I heard your stingray flew over the weekend, just spoke with Dean about it. Glad to hear things went well.

Word has it a few jet guys are meeting in Whidbey soon. Hope to meet you if you can make it.

~2 weeks and counting on mine. :D She's all in primer now and the hardware's all laid out in the fuse!

Later, back to wet sanding...
Kelly W

PS, Thanks for the pics Sonnich.

Hey Kelly, everything went pretty good. I do have some work to do on her, she ran out of elevator on landing and popped the canopy rails loose and I ground down the left wing tip on saturday and then there are a few control throws I have to set up better. This bird is fast!, we were flying around with the gear down, speedbrake deployed fully(without rolling of course) and power about 40% and she was scooting along quite well. Thsi plane definately needs good hard wheels, I had the robarts with foam inserts and they were terrible, so I took the glennis wheels/brakes of the F-15 and problem was solved. A special thanks to Dean Wichmann for the safe return of my plane and all of the support through out the project he is a great guy to work with! Unfortunately I think Madras was the only event that I will attend this year due to other meets interfering with my other vacation plans but we will see how things go. I will try to get the rest of the pics updated on the thread soon, it is just painting pictures but I want to finish it.

My stingray isnt nearly as ready as you guys.

Ive molunted the engine and the retracts and am currently working on the fuel tanks.

i was wondering, how have you guys secured your tanks, have you glued them in, and with what. It would be nice to have the option to remove them in the future, but i cant see how i could securely mount them.

i had thought of using hot melt glue, to allow me to remove them, but even a hot summer day in scotland ( or england) might be enough to melt it. So i m not thinking of that as a serious possibility.

Oh, i seem to have a problem fittin my yellow conformal tanks in and not having the piping interfere with the steering servo. Did any of you have a similar problem??

Stratotanker and I both used the Jet Tech Kevlar fuel tanks. They are mounted at the front by gluing a flange to the tank that mates to the underside of the speed brake servo tray. At the rear you need to glue in a custom made former between the gear mounting structures. After that, another flange is glued to the rear face of the tank with a matching bulkhead on the cross member you glued in the fuse. The whole setup it described on the Jet tech site. (http://www.angelfire.com/wi/jettech/page4.html)

If you decided to go with a composite tank, use Hysol 9462 or Aeropoxy bonding cement after lightly scuffing the tank. I'm not sure what to recommend if yellow's tanks are plastic... Perhaps you could post a picture of your tanks?

Piping the jet tech's is pretty easy. So long as the brass tubes are oriented to the outer side of the tank on both sides, the only modification you'd need to do to the steering servo mount is a clearance cut for the cap. Nothing too serious.

Hope this helps. :)

Hello Birdseed.

Sorry to say, I just glued mine inn with silicon paste. But I only use a 1 litre tank under the speedbrake, and a ½ litre coca cola bottle as a hopper tank. This all works very well for me. I now have 25 flights on my Stingray, with no flameouts at all. My SimJet 1200 only uses up 0,8 litre in a 6 min flight.

Thanks for the help guys. Ill look into gluing some mounts on, but if not i might just go with the silicon gel and hope, ( really hope) i never have to remove them.

I have to admit i never really considered the weight of the fuel on the bottom of the fuselage, especially when pulling g.

I dont yet have a digital camera, and unfortuneatly as ive just changed careers and am moving house, i wont have one for a while, so no photos yet!!

OK, here are the pics of the finished product. I have some work to do on it after the first flight. First off the ailerons are too touchy so I am going to tame those down a bit, it needs new wheels, Robarts are not for this plane and I have to do some CG work. I want to find out exactely what the plane is doing as the fuel burns off, it is balanced 1/8th forward of the CG so I want to know how far it shifts with a full header and main tanks. I will post the results if anyone is interested. I got kind of lazy and did not post the painting and wetsanding phases, sorry! A HUGE thank you is in order for Doug Hunt for his painting ability and sacraficing his weekend to help me get this thing done in time for Madras. Can't wait to get her in the air again!!!

Where did you put your antena? Didi you use a whip? i'm planning to put mine in front with a little hole in the nose to let the antena be out of the fuse 2-3inchs

I ran my stock antenna down the right side of the fuse in a nyrod and out into the wing. I got 4 tenths of a mile over a hill and around buildings with the plane on the ground with no interference.
