I like your building style!

Question, on the nose gear door, did you notice if the door ended up with a compund curve (curved in 2 axis)?

Also how much ffuel do the kevlar tanks hold?

Thanks

Matt, thanks for the compliments! and yes the door has two bends in it, nothing that a heat gun did not take care of though. It would have been easier if yellow would have left the openings for the modeler to cut out but instead I had to make up a large sheet of poly ply to build the door, not to mention it is a bit cheaper than buying the stuff. It took some heat on the fuse and the door before I had a good fit and when I had it close I heated the entire door and then taped it into position and allowed it to cool, great results. Jet Techs web site says that the tanks hold 83 oz. but someone posted it being closer to around the 70-75 oz mark, it is somewhere in this thread I think, either way I think that it will be enough, I am still going to add a 4 oz header tank too, decided that 2 oz was too small.

I think the stock tanks I got are 72 ounces, I will try those first to save some money. I need the cash as I got stuck by Tam buying one of these bad boys!!

A Super Bandit is just not going to be right without one of these!!

I worked on the fuel tanks today, I fired up the lathe and made the clunks, fittings for the filter clunk and a fuel line plug for filling. I also made all of the wood blocks up to mount the tanks as per Bob Prices suggestions that are posted on Jet Techs web site.

Making the fitting for the filter clunk that will go in the header.

Both tanks hooked up in series for leak check. When the tanks are full of fuel there is no air, when the tanks are drained I get almost all the fuel out, maybe 1 1/2- 2 oz remains between the two tanks so I can live with that. Tomorrow is header construction and tank mounting!

Chris, the last time I made a new pleated paper clunk I had yet to buy my lathe and so I did the goofy soldered brass tube arrangement. I now have a lathe and have been itching to do it your way. I will also put a bit of a flange on it where it interfaces to the filter cap.

Like this ?

I'm the guy who measured the tanks. I got 73 oz. Still more than enough.

Wow, I did not even think of that! I also cleaned up the filter side of the fitting by putting a radius on the inside for better flow, I installed all 3/16 brass in the tanks also to keep the resistance down in the lines and keep the tanks from swelling during fueling. I am learning to machine by trial and error, still very much a rookie!, I still need to get a grinder to fine tune my cutting tools, I can spend all day on the lathe, it is addicting, just like everything else in this hobby. Nice work 747DRVR. The tanks have been on leak check for 8 hrs so I guess it is good enough for me. A question for you guys though, I thought I heard that tygon expands a bit after being subjected to kero so I kept the clunks a bit short, how much growth can I expect from the tubing? Thanks.

I have not had any issues with Tygon, at least where it is not subject to constant UV exposure.

Woketman,

Psychic, hmm.... I've been wondering what else I could do since my airline went under bankruptcy protection recently ? Not a good time to be 747drvr or an Extra 330 driver for that matter. Had a flameout on my new DP Extra and got fooled by the apparent size of the model and flew it into a line of trees ! I've never flown a large gasser until now and I got sucked in. Got off fairly lucky ! Should have stayed in building today !

Strato tanker,

You're doing really nice work !

Thanks for the compliments Marc, sorry to hear about the gasser. Is your Stingray still on back burner status?, I am hoping to see some others built soon, it feels like I am the only one right now, or are you guys waiting to learn from my mistakes???LOL! I have about got the colors worked out, I will post some pics of it later when I finish up with what I want on the bottom.

Yah, I'm letting you blaze the trail ! The Stingray is only on the backburner for a little while so I can finish off a few other projects ( and repairs :( ) . I can still burn kero and ruin my hearing with my Super Reaper so I don't feel in a rush. Here's a Stingray I saw at Toledo at the Yellow booth. I'd love to see what you have planned for yours.

Hello Stingray builders.

Hello Chris.

You are not alone in this. I think you are doing a great job posting your pics and comments here, so just keep up the good work. We can all learn for you.

I have just finished glassing the wooden parts of my Stingray. I expect to have mine up and flying in two weeks. I only have this one pic right now.

I know i said early on that id be contributing as i started my stingray about 3 days after stratotanker but ive been a bit busy with my 737 type conversion to allow me to build the thing.
Oh yeah and im sitting here with a digital camera lacking batterys poised to get some photos online.

Anyway, i came to fitting my gear last night. The main wheels just fit into the holes. Thats fine, i can live with that.
Then as i lined the nosewheel up at the right length to let it sit slightly nose up, i went to operate the retracts. The leg length is too long to fit into the pre cut nosewheel hole. ( by about 2-4 cms)
Ive looked at the nosewheel former and its in the correct place. I could not have it any further forward as the nose leg is only1-2 cm from the front of the nosewheel cut out on the fuselage.

Strato, would you mind doing us a huge favour, could you measure from the bottom of the fuselage to the ground at the nose or the main wheels, or let me know your main wheel diameter to give me a feel for what im aiming for.
( And ill try and get those photos online asap)

Birdseed, I too had the problem with the tires hitting on the nose. My plane has 2 1/4 mains and a 2'' nose ans is sitting pos 4 degrees on the wheels. The mains are cut to the instructions dimensions but the nose I will have to measure for you and get back to you. By the time I had the nose gear the length I wanted it, I had to grind more of the fuse and did not like the size of the hole so that is where the door came in. I got the tanks mounted and header built last night so now it is down to gear installation and finishing!, I should start glassing this week.

Thanks chris,
i just measured my wheels- the mains are 2- 5/8 and the nose is 2. I believe my legs are actually shorter than the instructions as i had to center the axle exactly in the centre of the wheel hole as the wheels just fit in the recess. But assuming yours is exactly centered, mt main legs are only what- 2-5/8-2-2/8 and /2 = 3/16 potentially higher.
I guess i cant really ask the shop owner to change my wheels now and if you had to enlarge it anyway, then id still have to do that. Regardless as the main leg is 2-4 cms too long anyway then i couldnt lose that with smalle wheels.

Thinking aloud but i think my dremels about to get brought out. Slightly irritating to have to do it, id have thought yellow would have put the right size nose wheel recess in. Much more likely im missing the point somewhere!! :D

I would rather that Yellow not cut out the holes to begin with but we really do not have much say in do we! You could always put a door on the nose or two doors and split them down the middle if you are not happy with the big hole left for the gear to fit??? How are things going otherwise? One note on the tanks guys, I think that they are great but in my opinion they need to be a little shorter in height(1/8'') When they are mounted solid the bottom of the fuse is pushed out a bit, I can take up about 1/16'' if I grind down the recess for the top speedbrake. The brake corneres have to be sanded down for it to close all the way since it hits the tanks. I don't think that there would be that much of a loss in capacity if they were just a tad smaller. What do you guys think?, anyone else had this problem?

Chris

Wow.

C'mon, you guys, give her a break! A very nice looking, easy to build turbine plane, with preinstalled spar receptacles and all, for $395, and you're irritated about the nose wheel cutout? It's just like the pre-cut cut-out on the A-4 and F-18 single. It's general. If your wheel doesn't fit through, just cut it some more!

Kinda reminds me of the guy who PM'd me to say that he'd consider the new F-15 IF, I repeat, IF--I 'threw in' the tailpipe.....

:-)

Happy Easter!!!!
