if you dont want to race.. go MAD FORCE it happens to be perfect for what you want.
It also avoids all the "my savage is better than your maxx" etc, but you can say, my MAD FORCE will whip you both, as you drive off (pulling wheelie of corse) in a nice plume of blue smoke!!
from experience it happens to be teh best experience ever!!
also it happens to be indesructable, again from experience.. [:@], any more info PM me

IMO 8scale is the ONLY way to go...
if you new to r/c... go with the 8scale savage, MGT, LST, or any of the other dozen or so 8scale kits out. This is what I like.

Just get what you think looks cool. Thats what I do.

I owned a T-Maxx for a year and I wish I had bought a Savage for bashing.
I now own a Hot Bodies Lightning Stadium and bash with that and I Love it!

I dont see how a savage is a 1/8 scale...ppl at my lhs compared my MGT to a savage and the MGT is bigger then it. The savage is like the same size as a T-Maxx which is proabable why they can share bodies.
Just get what you think looks cool. Thats what I do.

Hi ICrashThings, the Savage is marketed and sold as an 8scale kit... it is just sold with a undersized small body as are a few other 8scale kits I think to make it more appealing to the guys that want to use the smaller t maxx type size bodys.

Here is some info for you about "scale"

If youre looking for a bash truck that will just go over anything, I say a MGT or TMaxx would be good... I have not really driven a savage so I cant speak for the durability and quality of them, but looking them over and seeing my friends bash the living crap out of them, theyre a good truck as well. Just look at your LHS and see what the have plannty of parts for because if you bash, youre going to break something! Also, the lightning stadium is a good truck if you dont plan on doing alot of rockcrawling type things.. its fast enough (if not fast enough just get a diff clutch bell), easy to maintain, parts arent really readily available (not much will break on the RR if you dont go too crazy with it) but there isnt much to break, already is a RTR (just need a 7.2 stick pack, c cell batt fer the glow ignitor and fuel and youre running. But of course, I'm slightly biased because I own both the pro and RR, and the RR has had over 15 feet of air under it multiple times and not so much as a whimper from it other than the steering servo (you'll break the stock steering servo in a RTR anyway) But of course... I'm slightly biased...

I personally like the maxx only because i own one. My buddy just got the savage 4.6, its bad ass, and the savage is better built out of the box. BUT the Tmaxx is so popular you can get parts anywhere and more available upgrades made for maxx than any other nitro. My maxx will out race and out bash his savage, but that was many many upgrades later.
p.s. Everybody please keep ****ting on maxx, just means more hopup steals on ebay as people sell to upgrade.

My vote goes for Savage since you're wanting to bash. You might also want to look at a Revo. They're not "Race Only" machines. [8D]
As for what you need to look out for here's a little list....
1. Engine. They can be damaged in less than one tank of gas. # of tanks ran through it means very little. It all depends on how it was run, tuned, & maintained.
2. Electronics. Everything might be there but does it work well at a distance?
3. Scammers. They're everywhere. Even in the RCU marketplace unfortunately.
4. Complete. Don't buy a truck that is "mostly there". If it's not completely assembled you don't want it. Its real easy for a few parts to add up to enough money for you to get ripped off.
I always say this when it comes to R/Cs.... Buy new or save until you can. That way you know what the R/C has been through & you have a warranty. It may seem like a good idea to spend a little less at first but the price of a piston & sleeve can eat up the money you saved real quick. Not to mention possibly needing a pullstart, a few screws that seem to have disappeared, a new spur gear because the one on it is chewed, new body because the one that came with it is in rough shape, new tires because these are worn, new rims because these are heavily glued to the tires, etc... etc... etc...
