Default Serious stalling problem, please help

Hi,

I am a noob to RC trucks, so sorry in advance if some stupidity is present here.

Basically, I got a kyosho inferno ST US sports yesterday and took it for the brake in process today. I have read tons of manuals, watched the traxxas dvd and so forth.

The problem that I am having is that I cannot break in because of constant stalling. It doesn't matter if I let it idle, attempt to use little throttle, tweak the throttle offset setting, it always stalls. If I let it idle, it stops approx after 30-60 seconds. If I push the throttle (as gently as I can, not even a quarter way) it stalls. The only way it starts to go if I increase the throttle level (on the remote) to 20% higher, than 0. And even like that it stalls after a short period of time.

Now, I know about richning and leaning and I have set the high speed needle to 3 360 turns (as in the manual for the GXR28 engine). There are tons of blue smoke coming from the exhaust, but it doesn't help (even at idle the smoke comes out).

The carbuerator setting is set to the level, where the engine doesn't stall if I max out on the brakes (it slows the rpm, but doesn't stall). I I hit full throttle (when engine is off, of course), the carb opens fully (there is a huge opening, is that correct?).
The idle RPM is set to some point, where I can actually start the engine without tweaking the throttle level on the remote.

I think I am doing something wrong, because the engine starts always with 1-2 cranks (provided I prime it), all electronics works, but it doesn't drive.

I am very frustrated right now, I have spent 5 hours trying to figure something out, but managed to burn only about 100cc of fuel (not even a full tank), can anyone help, please?

If carb is set at factory settings then start turning in the HSN about 1/16 at a time. Pick the truck off the ground once started and keep blippng the throttle till you can give it full throttle and it does not die. SOunds rich and it wont stay running because its not heating up to operating temperatures. If you have the truck off the ground it will help take the load off the motor and once you get good throttle you can put it down and drive it. Alot of cars will stall at first till warmed up.

hmm, but I haven't broken it in yet. It wouldn't be good for the engine if I floor it. The manual for the truck actuallly says, that messing with the needles when weels are off the ground will most likely damage the engine.

It seems to me, that it's either too rich or too lean. It is stalling because it either get's not enought air or fuel. I don't think, that I should be revving up the engine on the first tank. I think maximum should be only 25%. I have heard, that some let it drive with the idle set higher and break in like this. Don't know if it is wise though.

I dont really mean to go full throttle for long periods. I mean just blip the throttle till you get good throttle response. If the motor is cool and it loads up it will never take off untill it gets cleared out. Lean the hsn and see what happens.

ok, I will try applying throttle when wheels are off the ground. I hope it helps. When today I tried giving it any amount of throttle it stalled almost instantly.

Sounds like its loading up and its cold. Lean it out a little and it should get you going. You should also have a temp guage to make sure you are up over 200 durring break in and it does not over heat.

hmm, I am just curious, when the manual says recommended 3 turns from closed. Does it mean turning it 360 degrees or 180? If you are saying it's being flooded, I might have over-turned it.

Should it also be more difficult to start once it's leaned? I mean it starts awfuly easy.

Your low speed needle is what determines how hard or easy it starts. If it starts easy you should be good with the low speed needle. And yes 1 full turn is 380. A half turn is 180. Adjustments should be very small 1/16 turn.

ok, I see. Basically I will then need to try and tighten the high speed needle until it stops stalling (getting flooded).

Just one more thing. Kyosho doesn't use terms like low/high speed needle, so here is what I assume now, please correct me if I am wrong, as I might end up tweaking something different:

Needle valve: Adjusts the amount of fuel inflow into the mixture (high speed needle?)
Idle adjustment screw: Adjusts the carbuerator opening while idling (low speed needle?)
Idle mixture screw: Adjusts volume of air and fuel in mixture (don't really know what this is, but the engine is increasing rpm when I turn it clock-wise).

Anyway, I have tried running today and I seem to be getting it. The only problem now is that it cannot idle. Only for maybe 20-30 seconds and then stalls. But for this I will tweak the needle, my guess is the engine is being flooded. My guess is I am still running extremely rich, as if I turn the model I get this brown liquid leaking from the exhaust.

One more question: is it normal, that when the engine heats up it starts running faster even at the same throttle level, or does it mean I screwed up with the break in? Basically when it's cold I increase throttle trim by 25% and it starts and doesn't go anywhere, however, after a minute or two it runs very fast at this trim level and I have to decrease it. Is this normal?

Try increasing your idle, if burnt up fuel is comming out of the pipe then your running rich, but dont lean it out too much because your just breaking it in correct?, thats usual because the engine warms up and idles higher.

Hi, well, I see brown liquid coming out from the pipe when I turn the model on the side. So I guess it is rich.

hmm, I can try increasing the idle even higher, but it already tried to drive away even at this setting. I have to grab the remote and pull the brakes every time as soon as it starts.

Do you think the problem is with the HSN? I am just thinking: if it stall on lower RPM (usually, when I break and the RPM is decreased), maybe it's the LSN, that's set too rich. What do you think?

try increasing your idle and lowering the throttle trim, if its still stalling then try leaning it slightly but not too much, it doesnt sound like its the lowspeed needle.
