Just got home and starting to recuperate from a fantastic weekend! Chip and the Bear Mountain Flyers along with everyone who helped really put on something special this weekend. AMA/FAI pattern along with "Old School Masters" and the UMX Gee Bee racing really made for a full plate of fun. Special guests like Joe Bridi made it even more special. If you're a fan of pattern flying of any type you really missed out if you didn't make it to this meet.
I just want to thank all involved for holding this event and let's hope it's just a start of a long tradition. Thanks!!!

Hey Guys,
Sorry it took me so long to post the results and pictures of this weekend's event. Unlike Tony who is at home recuperating, I just returned from Urgent Care to get my finger drained and after an X-Ray, lo and behold, a broken finger. I too would like to thank Chip, Leon, the Bear Valley Mountain Flyers Club for putting on such a great event. Special Thanks to Mike & Jean, and Randy for scoring once again. A thank you to the out-of-town pilots, especially John Gayer, for driving 11 hours from New Mexico and Robert Green from flying in from Nebraska. Hope everyone made it home safe.
Hopefully we can have another event like this next year! HOpe to see you all in 3 weeks in Hemet, California for the D7 Pattern contest.

Well guys its over and what a weekend it was. I cannot thank you all for coming out it was great seeing everyone and the memories will last me a lifetime. It was so cool on Sat. when you looked around and the pits were full of pattern flyers from both present and past. Along with Joe himself we had Clearance Lee and Bob Smith who stopped by just adding to everything else that was happening. Mike C. brought his girlfriend Jessica and his sister Jen. who who stepped right in and kept things going smoothly. We sold out of shirts almost immediately and plan to order some more. Thanks again Jon!!!!!!
I am completely wiped out today but plan on writing some more when I get a little energy. Kyle Dahl is not only hooked on pattern but did the most impressive demos I have ever seen with his heli. All in all it was a blast and we are already planning next year.

This was a very fun contest! I never thought that Gee Bee racing would add to a pattern contest, and even though I couldn't fly one, cuz I fly Mode 4, I got to do a lot of the releasing of planes. Was a huge blast watching the carnage. And a bunch of laughter from everyone watching these guys compete with them!
Chip, I can't thank you enough for putting this all together. You busted your butt to put this all together, and all weekend and it is highly appreciated! Caglia, thanks for everything you did for us bro! The food was great! Your sis and your girlfriend really added to the contest and really helped out a lot. And that is appreciated also!
Leon, thank you and the Bear Mountain Flyers for use of your great facility once again! It's a great site, and great people.
Jim Kimbro, I think the highlight of my whole weekend was watching you fly/call classic pattern. I would come out to the flight line to get the full effect of your "unique" calling. Was awesome to watch and listen to!
What a great time!!!!!!

Bummed I missed it. Traffic got the better of me. Here's my view with 60 miles left to go at 1:30 am Friday night. This was after was after it taking 3-1/2 hours to go 1-1/4 miles. I scooted across the median just after taking this photo and got home around 2:45. All was not lost however. I went to the RCX show in Long Beach and picked up a nearly ready to fly (just add servos and RX) 62-inch Osiris!! Nifty little practice plane.
See you guys in Hemet (God willin' and if the roads aren't dead stopped).

Add my vote for one of the best contests in recent history. It was so good to see the old guys, lots of new guys, as well as the regulars and to meet visitors Gayer and Green, RCU guys who we "talk to" all the time. Speaking of old guys, that damn Bob Smith looks like he is about 21. It pays to take care of yourself, boys and girls.
We flew a new format, two rounds about an hour apart on each day. Half of a class flew on one line and half on the other and then the pilots switched lines while the judges stayed in place. I'm still trying to decide if I like it. It would be great if you knew when your class would fly, but if you don't, you still need to be there early and stay late. The bad thing about it was I didn't see any complete flights of the guys I was competing against. I did see some great maneuvers by Kris F who flew just before me and I was impressed by the pace of his Nuance. Leon R also did some very nice maneuvers with his Contra Drive. After watching them, I plan to slow my plane down and slow down all my roll rates if it will stay in the air. I may have to take out all of the extra weight I'm carrying around. I'm also going to figure out how to spin. I had probably done 40 in a row with perfect exits prior to the contest, but on my second flight, it went into a spiral and I got zeros. I decided to set up a Spin condition for Sunday and it spun faster and I never came out on heading. Moral of the story, be prepared and don't make changes you don't get a chance to test before they count.
Thanks Chip, Leon, Tony and all who worked very hard to make it come true.

I would like to thank D8's Gordon Anderson.....without his hard work modifying his scoring program, Chip's job with scoring the classic pattern part of the contest would have been a tad more difficult. Classic guys were able to pick their sequence, and have their score sheets printed out.......what a time saver! Great job Gordon!

Wow! I also had to recover for a day before I could move! Thanks to Chip, Leon and the Bear Mountain club, Team Caglia, Jon Bruml for some awesome shirts and everyone else who worked hard to pull off an incredible pattern bash. We couldn't decide if "bash" or "festival" was more appropriate. I am leaning toward festival! Having Joe Bridi there with the autographed Dirty Birdy that I remember seeing in the magazines back in the day was very cool! Mike and Jean Greear kept the scoring running perfectly as usual. Having Classic and AMA pattern and Gee Bee racing (Thank you Tony for organizing and running that!) all together was just a blast! Chip, I know how much work you put into this and I sure hope we can do it again next year!
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!

For those interested in the Classic Pattern portion of this event please see the attached flyer for the So Cal Classic Pattern Get-Together being put on by Vertigo II on May 19th. Last years even was a ton of fun and this year should see even more models. Many, including myself, are bringing two classics this year.
Chip, Ihope you still plan to attend. Icould not join you guys last weekend as Ihad to take my daughter to see colleges in No Cal.
Hope to see you guys in a couple of weeks!

Hey Jim O...
You thought my pace was good with the Nuance? I just added a bit of right thrust to it and I didn't know it, but I had a 20x15 on it from the last flight I flew it at the Victorville contest in the super wind we had there. I think the 21x14 is a better prop for less wind.. Still, it had an ok pace IMO.. Just thought it funny as I had read your post..
Hope all is well. C ya at a contest soon hopefully!

Reconnected with old friends, made some new friends, and am officially hooked on pattern! Just picked up my first 2M plane this week ANC hope to have it ready for Hemet. Thank you Chip for all your hard work and promotion you did to give pattern a nice boost back where it should be. Good times with Team Caglia and great times hanging with my son! Watching Chris fly brought back a lot of memories of a great friend I had, and now I've reconnected with his brother!! Thanks again Tony for all your help and support. Wouldn't have made it trough that contest without it. Hoping to see Chris and Vic at the next pattern contest. I am hoping to improve my skills and look a lot more respectable at the next contest!!<div>

Chip,
It was a great event, I had a lot of fun. But I have to say, I felt deprived in the competition department. I *did not* like the shortened sportsman, at most you saved about 90 seconds per sportsman flight and you denied us the *least* repetitive part of the sequence (vertical upline, split-S turnaround, horizontal roll, the 2nd of 2 1/2 reverse cubans and the cobra). As someone who treked a couple hundred miles and shelled out for a hotel room to compete, not to mention the $40 to participate I felt denied the equal opportunity to participate. You had 8 folks show up for sportsman because you threw a fun bash. We had 3 in Sportsman at Victorville a few weeks before and we had 4 in Sacramento this past weekend. Please don't confuse correlation (we shortened the pattern and had 8 sportsman contestants) with causality (we had 8 sportsman contestants BECAUSE we shortened the pattern). I don't believe the latter is true. The guys that were in sportsman that I talked to would have liked to do the whole sequence. You had 8 because Arvin is centrally located and there was a bunch of other fun stuff built around the competition.
Let's please not have any more competitions that shorten the sequence, you are denying us the opportunity to perform in front of judges, which is what we need (other than lots of practice) to get better at managing our nerves and prepare ourselves to move up to intermediate. The only reason the sequence "feels" repetitive is because most of us choose to do 1/2 reverse cubans as our out of the box turnarounds. When you look at the sequence itself, there are 2 1/2 reverse cubans and 1 1/2 cuban, a stall turn, an immelmann and a split-S. Turnaround options are limited when you want to keep most of the stuff down low where it's easier for us to know the attitude of our planes so a certain amount of repetition is necessary.
As for IMAC, yeah, there are only 10 maneuvers, but you do them twice how is that LESS repetitive or better than 15 maneuvers only two of which are repeated (1/2 reverse and straight flight)?

I am not sure what to say other then (we had more entrants because we shortened the pattern) we had 8 and it should of been 10 but two guys had last minute emergencies come up.
That is 100% more then Sacramento and those four would not of flown if the pattern was the full length regardless of what might of been said at the contest. I know this because I worked with 6 guys for a couple weeks to get them through the short pattern without zeros and that was cutting it close as it was. I am not sure how we will do it in the future I think we need to finish out the year and see if we have an increased entrants. I have been thinking about it and I do have a few ideas but they are not things that can be done at any one contest so I am not going to get into it now.
Once again I am sorry you felt deprived we did what we thought was best for the event. Pattern, I meant, not the Contest.
C
