Come join us in the beautiful Hudson River Valley for a one day pattern contest for all classes. Our primer grew to a full schedule event but we will still have lots of coaching and training for sportsman pilots. Any AMA legal plane that is below 95 db @ 25' is allowed in sportsman. So bring your friends and come fly with us. The target is four rounds with the finals sequence optional for FAI pilots.

I am thrilled to announce that I will be Co-CD for this event! This will be the second annual Haverstraw Pattern Challenge located in Haverstraw, NY (30 miles north of NYC). We will be having a one day pattern contest on Saturday, May 17th.
One of the main goals of this contest is to recruit any pilots that are interested in flying pattern and having lots of fun! Since we want to encourage anyone interested in participating, any AMA legal airplane will be allowed to compete in Sportsman. I will be out at the flying field on Thursday and Friday to assist with setting up airplanes and coaching those who are interested.
The HVRCC flying field has a well-maintained grass runway (600 x 80) that is in pristine condition. Overlooking the Hudson River, this flying field is a great place to fly and take in the beautiful scenery.
Details of the Contest:
* Field will be open for practice Thursday and Friday from sunrise to sunset. We will be available all day Thursday and Friday for those that need assistance.
* Pilot registration will begin on Saturday, May 17th at 9:00 a.m.
* Registration fee will be $20 which includes pizza for lunch.
* Donuts and coffee will be provided for breakfast.
* Four rounds will be flown for each class (Sportsman, Intermediate, Advanced, Masters, FAI).
* FAI wil fly 2 rounds of P and 2 rounds of F (F is optional).
* Sportsman pilots are allowed to fly any AMA legal airplane.
* Awards will be given from 1st place to 3rd place for all classes.
Directions to the flying field: http://www.hvrcc.com/directions-to-the-field.html
For those of you that require a hotel in the area, we recommend Best Western or Super 8 in Nyack, NY, and Days Inn or Hilton Garden Inn in Nanuet, NY (all within 7 miles of flying field).
Look forward to seeing everyone next week! Please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or call 619-917-9171 for any questions about the contest.

Thanks to the club for hosting, it was a fun day! Here's some pics I took. If anyone finds one they want to download, doubleclick on the photo to bring it up then in the lower right hand corner you can select which size you want the photo to be. "Original" will be the largest and with the most resolution.

Awesome Jer!
Congrats to all the Sportsman contestants who flew on Saturday. This year's primer really built on the foundation that Anthony laid down last year and it was a privilege to be part of all that.
Looking back on Saturday, my favorite moments were calling for Ken, and Ken calling for me two rounds of Intermediate. Thanks Ken! After that, judging 2 rounds of Masters and 1 of Sportsman.
Thanks also to Jennifer and Bob Moulder for the scoring chores; the scoring folks are key to these contests and we can't thank them enough for all that they do for us. Way to go Mike!
Anthony, please do this one-day again next year, so worthwhile as a primer as well as a part of the D1 contest calendar. Hope to see all at Pocono in June and Lehigh Valley in July!

Dana, Jer, all the other attendees I met, and especially the great hosts at HVRCC, It was really nice to meet you all, fly, and watch everyone else fly at this Saturday's contest.
Some stuff I learned-
Being that I'm new, it's a lot more educational and fun watching the higher class if I have the sequence in hand. I did have the list and Aresti for intermediate and was able to follow along. Next contact I go to, I'll definitely print out the sequences for the other classes before hand.
It really helps to get feedback. Even if I know what I'm needing to correct, it helps to get reminders.
Take your time and let the plane fly bigger. I fly at tight fields and need to learn to fly bigger at other locations.
Practice in wind.
Get the wings level going into loops. It isn't just the wind; it's the pilot.

I'm glad that everyone had a good time! This was the first "serious" contest that we hosted. When we formed HVRCC, we wanted to make it club about people enjoying the hobby. We wanted to focus on the interests of our members. Right now some of that interest is in Pattern flying. The first time I saw a Pattern plane it was being flown by our own Dan Landis. He made the difficult seem easy and the impossible doable. Yesterday Mike Caglia flew my lowly Ugly Stik and made it look like something worth ten times more! I learned that "I" can benefit a lot from Pattern whether I enter another contest or not. It may take some time, but I'm going to learn as much as I can. You're
all a great bunch of people and I'm looking forward to hosting another contest again next year!
