If possible, please post some of the ZDZ 40 RE / Abbra install pics to this thread, or if available, send to me individually at [email protected]. I'm struggling with installing the engine and activating the choke. The choke of the Walbro carb has a 3/8" or so arm attached to the axis (or axle) that the choke flap is mounted to. This little arm has an 1/8" or larger hole in it. When you look at the amount of rotation needed to open/close the choke, the length of the arm, and the size of the hole, and the angle it is mounted, it looks like you can only activate it from directly behind the engine. Ideally, it would be oriented so that you can run a small pushrod out out the side or bottom of the plane. As is, I would need to install a second servo behind the motor to activate the choke and I don't want to do that. Further, unless you are a metal worker, replacing this arm is not as easy as with the throttle. Where as the throttle arm is held on by a set screw, this arm is a press fit with a cutout section that looks like a square, with 1/2 circles on two sides (sort of oval). Also, once the choke is in the "open" position, you must jerk it pretty good to start the rotation to the closed position, as it is held open by a knurl and ball detent or something similar.
If possible it would be sincerely appreciated to have some help with the following:
1. Pictures of the install and throttle/choke actuation
2. Modifications to the carb, if made, that facillitate R/C use
3. Any other modifications? Has anyone made an Aluminum "shaft-extention?" This motor has a stubby threaded shaft, and before mounting a prop you must screw on a steel shaft extension which also has the receiving threads for the spinner attachment. It would be a good way to save an oz.

the best part about building is that there are many different posibilities, use your enginering degree and perfect a lighter more geometric precise setup for this perplexing issue, maybe a 90 degree pivot arm w. carbon fiber rod exiting out the side? maybe you can drill a small hole in the existing choke arm to attach a clevis? when you come up with a technologically superior solution let me know so I can stop loosing sleep over it.

After looking at the choke articulation again last night, I decided that I could use some carbon fiber cloth and make two small circles with it. One circle would be cured hard and placed under the arm, the other circle of cloth would not have glue. Pre-position the bottom hard cirble with some CA, then use some aeropoxy to capture the original small arm, and place the second circle of cloth on top of it, thus capturing the choke arm completly and allowing arcitulation from all angles????

Top and bottom circle device with hard capture cirble interface - sounds great should work perfect, I like it from all angles. send some pics. Do I get that aeropoxy from aerobob?

A search for Aeropoxy on RCU will lead to all kinds of threads. This stuff is thrixotropic, meaning that if you put a bead on a vertical surface, it will not run. Thus, it stays where you put it and is incredibly hard. You can use it for all kind of GREAT uses, even filler if needed. It truly "locks" mechanically things in place and was my first idea to lock the carbon material to the metal little arm of the choke device.
Aeropoxy is sold by BVM, and is also a Lock-tite number which I can't remember now. The one I use takes 12 hrs to dry, but is worth the wait. You need an application 'gun' and mixing ends, which attach to the gun are about 6" long, which make them perfect for putting the glue where you want it.

Jim I was just having a look at a BME110 that I just got, for the throttle arm on this they cut a plastic disc with an arm location that was more convenient and used a couple of screws to mount it to the Walbros existing throttle lever. Seems like the ZDZ I had though had some kind of ball link arm on the throttle and choke though so maybe this wont work for yours.

The engine comes with a ball link which bolts thru the 1/8" hole - attach ball link -rotate as desired snap on link- If this is too hard - bolt on a Du Bro ball link (2/56 link )- then exit in a direction for maximum geometric efficiency - then go to a little bell crank to switch directions.
I have done a jillion of these and sometimes the small plastic aileron bellcrank is the most simple solution.
the DA 50 has same carb -same setup needed -so there are lots of guys who have resolved this .

Hey Pizza!
Looks just like mine, only mine is still on the bench! My plan is to retro fit (85% done), my ZDZ into a Gator Giles 202 for initial flying, then swap into the Abbra. In regards to the Abbra, the workmanship Jaroslav put into it is absolutely first class (Santa paid full price for mine). The paint is really nice, the rudder, stabs, wings, and fuselage are just super-ridicululously light. I wasn't keeping track, but I think it took 4-5 weeks to arrive at the Miami Airport. $25 later and I was through customs. About 15 minutes after opening the box, the wings and stabs were installed and looked straight to my eye. In the 16th minute, I weighed the whole airframe and it was under 4.75 lbs.
Did you add the white pieces in front of the gear plate? My fuselage is almost totally empty barring the gear plate, rudder tray, and aft horizontal plate. (for the casual reader, these plates look to be thin foam with a layer of class cloth on each side). VERY nice work Jaroslav!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, the props and headers that Ed is bringing in look good.
It looks like with the ZDZ, you do not have to close-out the bottom of the plane as you would with a glow setup. Thanks for posting the pics Ray. When I started considering the gas engine setup, I called and spoke to Ed S. about the plane. If you use Ed's pipes, you know that the quality is superb. I figured that if Ed was going to import the Abbra, that it too would be a superb product and to my and judgement so far, it definitely is.

The white panel is glass/rohacell/glass sandwich this stuff is stiff and unbelievably light good for non-structural servo trays, tank support, fuse partition, etc. it comes in 7"X24" panel weighs 66 grams. the brown panel is glass/herex/glass. they are 1/8" thick and cost $30/panel about 1/2 cost of other similar products

I was ordering some stuff from Ed when I stumbledover this plane. Is it a best kept secret or something????
Looking at the range between the Impact and the Pinnacle. Especially the range of finish, quality and price, it looks like there is a nice mid-priced almost finished product here.
