Default Paint?

How much weight should be added to an airplane after paint and sanding is done? 1-3 oz. 3-6oz or 6 - 10oz? Keep in mind that we fly pattern and weight is an issue

I use PPG concept paint, and on most of the planes that I paint the weight gain
is 3 to 6 oz. Depending on how much sanding you do. The Panacea that I painted
gained 6oz because of the filling that was done and the Hydeaway was only 3oz.
Hope this helps

If you paint the whole model, including wing panels, stab and rudder, fuse and landing gear, it should be in the 10-12 ozs area for a 2 meter type widebody, more or less depending on how large the fuse is. That includes covering material for the wing and stab, which for me is silkspan. If you are painting the fuse only, it shouldn't be more than around 4 ozs

I forgot to say the 3 to 6oz is fuse, landing gear and wheel paint's only. We monokote the wings, stab and rudder.

Robert,

I agree with Todd, 3-6 oz. The Eclipse that I painted for you last year was exactly 3.6 oz. in weight gain. I keep up with all that when I am in the process of painting. It helps to have a really good gun to atomize the paint in order to get the best coverage. I use Basecoat Clearcoat by Dupont and the main area I see people make a mistake with this paint is in the base colors. Keep in mind if you are using this system that you do not want to put the base colors on shiney. The clearcoat will take care of the shine.

I've just discovered this post so sorry to bring back an oldy back.
I had a glass fuse' from a 2x2 primed and painted (white only) at a car shop.
It added just over 800g!
To say I was reather pissed would be an understatement... all the shop had to say was: "Just look at that finish!"

Indeed it was a finish Rolls Royce would have been proud of.
Specially that last WET coat!

The trick to painting a plane is in light coats. Especially if using a Base/ Clear system. only use enough paint to provide coverage. Color choice also plays a part in wieght gain. Some colors cover in 2-3 light coats while others can take as much as 4-6. Also, a sealer applied to the primer coat will also aid in color coverage. The primer will not bleed through. The list goes on........

Hey Bla Bla,
Just remember: cars don't fly
I guess you'll be doing some serious sanding. Maybe you can sand off most of the base color then rub it out so you don't have to paint over it other than color (even clear adds weight).
Good luck,
Will B.

That's pretty impressive on the weight. What are you spraying with and what kind of paint? I use ppg base and clear. I like the 2 stage paints. They're fool proof. Even with my crappy hvlp gun.. How long do you have in that paint job. It looks good from here.... You should move to California so you can paint my planes, lol.....

Good luck with your business...

thanks chris

firstly id move to california tomorrow! id be able to get more flying done there than here trying to dodge the rain and the snow at the min.[]

i use a number of base coats. spies, lecher (im not sure on the spelling of that) and some others depending on what give the best colour match, then use maxiclear lacquer. sprayed with deffernt guns and airbrushes depending on the aera to be sprayed. but the secret to the light weight is the priming stage.[8D]
that oxalys has about 36-40 hours in it including all the seam work, masking, painting, remasking etc.
that photo dosnt show the true shine on the paint, ill get some photos posted soon of the model outside.

if your interseted find out the shipping costs lol
or if you like i can arrange a full package for self spraying a model with everthing you need (including the 'secret' primer)
