Genesis ARF build, glow version

Mike,
With all of the deadsticks on the glow engines, the electric setup looks better all the time. Just kidding. I ended up substituting 1/8" hard ply for the main gear plate. I also use the cut-out areas to loop my velcro straps to hold down the batteies. So far I have not even cracked the fuse with some rough landings. I prefer the CF gear as they do not spread with moderate landings. The aluminum gear won't keep it's shape after the first "spread" landing.

I would say during the break in you definitely need a starter. The 1.60 was pretty stiff when it was new. I still need a starter to crank mine. It starts easily with a starter, but I have to go through a priming ritual with the starter before I light the glow plug. Once the glow lighter is on it will usually fire up pretty easily...
The thing you have to watch is the engine can hit REALLY hard when it fires. I was taught by EHFAI to spin the engine up with the starter and then after its spinning turn the glow lighter on to minimize the pop. I check my spinner frequently as well as the prop nut and the exhaust system as the jar from the initial start seems to loosen things up after 10 flights or so.
Thats my personal experience.

Dont need any extra holes. You get plenty of airflow in through the chin and out through the pipe exhaust for the 1.60DZ. I have not had any engine problems other than the fact that its a very hard hitting engine so I have to make sure everything stays tight and the vibration does not knock things loose. [8D]

I dont know Walter, my engine runs well without any cutouts. I have not had any problems with it and I probably have about 120-150 flights. Right now its 95 degrees and about 100% humidity here and I'm still not having any problems whatsover.

I used to live in Louisiana, so I know how sucky it is at times. I still go down there a few times a year, I wish there were a pattern contest ya'lls way around Thanksgiving that I could go to.

Ray,
The closest you're going to get to Thanksgiving in that area is the SPARKS contest in Houston 10/06/06. It's certainly a LOT more comfortable in October!
The SPARKS contest was quite enjoyable last year, you should try and make it!

This is in response to the post about hand start the YS, start the YS always with a starter, not by hand, if it runs backwards there will be no lubrication at all on the connecting rod and it could the engine, it takes close to 20 seconds for this to happen, and there is a warning on the YS instructions to always use the starter as the only method to be used, all my oder engines I start by hand.

After using mine for most of this year I discovered that the original wing tube (unfinished aluminum) was eating its way into the foam core by as much as 3.5 inches into the left wing and 1 inch into the right wing. I discovered this last time I went flying when the wing tube was way off center upon removal. Probably due to the vibration of the YS160DZ that is beating up the airframe pretty good. I am using an old Hyde Mount that was probably meant for the YS140.
Solution is that I made two circular balsa end caps 3/8"thick and inserted and sealed them into the wing holes at 9.25"depth giving about .25"play to the tube on either side.
GREAT airplane by the way!
