What is the best prop combination for this engine? Anyone out there know? I am flying a 140 size pattern plane that is about 10 pounds.

16.5x12W is one of the more widely used props.

Default Props

The 16.5-12W like Chad stated or the 17-12.....These are the APC props.....If you want a ballistic missile the 16-12 works and works good for a break in type of application....The 17-10 regular tough to find not the narrow....its fairly new....Central has them....

Also the 16-13 works pretty well.

My preference goes to the 16.5-12W best overall acceleration and brakes....but its not the quiet choice....you will running 95-96db full open.....this busts the F3A noise rule.....But dial it back about 300rpm to around 8100 and its makes 92-93db and still has tons of power the as the 2 strokes at sea level.

This is of course on 30% cool Power heli Pro

Default What pipe when over the noise limit?

Troy,
What pipe are you running? We have not pulled out the DB meter on our DZ but I did not think it was so loud. It does make quite the growl, though.

We are using the ES 2-stroke pipe, length medium.

THanks,
Mark

It also depends on your plane, how clean and aerodynamic it is, what weight it is, what design it is, etc.....

I am running the Greve pipe and see the same db's as Troy on a full throttle 16.5x12W. If I go to the 16x13 and get it around 8100 I get the noise down to 91 dB's.

It does have a little bark to it, but its got soo much power that you dont really care if you back it off a couple hundred rpm

Like Troy said if you want some screamin' vertical the 16x12 will make you very happy I had that on my Evolis (9.4 lbs) and the power was just plain stupid :stupid: but fun

Default Hatori 693 pipe

Central Hobbies Header and Hatori 693 pipe.....The Asano pipe are quieter....and I have not tried one yet....

The ES pipes are louder than the Hatori's...even on the 2 strokes....People say they are quieter but the sound is a little different...on a meter they are noisy about 1-2db over the standard stuff....The make a gaaazzzzoooo time sound....

I have not had much luck with them they eventually will start to weep oil even if you use the right amount of teflon tube and so on....I treated one really nice for a two months and it started to leak....the resin is not up to the temps....IMHO.....they are of the best quality and are literally work of art....I don't need the weight savings...They seem to be well liked by the 2 stroke guys....I liked the Hatori 900 (OS pipe) when running my EFI...seemed to work the best...

but I have 3 of them if anyone is interested....cheap.

From what I have seen the Asano stuff is a bit better on the higher temps....The headers are different...and because of the header design and the way it fits into the pipe maybe its helping the heat issue...I know Quique's plane was very quiet and still same power as we had.....Also from the specs the Asano stuff is almost as light as the ES stuff....

I'm not biased in anyway just relaying my experiences many are very thrilled with the ES pipes....Ed is a nice guy and works very hard on a good product....I just like it bit more simple.....The Hatori is easy to setup and has never failed me......I plugged one up once it had tons of flights and got some teflon stuck down in it....plugged it up good...I cut it apart then had it welded back together.....works fine.

What fuel are you folks using with the DZ?

My DZ just arrived in the mail a few hours ago.

Default Fuel

Cool Power 30% Heli Pro.....

its Cool Power but Orange in color.....Morgan also makes a 20% heli pro also...same stuff less stink....The 30% really has a better idle and smoother transition....

I know that other manufacturers of fuel have come up with a DZ blend...or a Low Vis blend....These should work....

Last year running the DZ I found the absolute best results with the Cool Power 30% Heli....nothing else compared...I'm talking 15-20% performance....I tried them all....now this was before the low viscosity fuels came out especially formulated for the DZ.....I was running std pattern or Heli blends....

The COOL POWER WAS KING of them all! Not only that but my motors have lots of time...one was prototype and it has in the area of 500plus flights...the other was a pre-production motor that was identical to the production motors...It has about 200 flights...both of these save some 70 flights of trying fuels are now exclusively run on the Cool Power 30% heli pro.

YS plug, 16.5-12W or 17-12 APC prop and a 20 oz regular (crank) Tettra tank and the foam clunk supplied with the motor...Its a perfect setup.......

Troy,
I have a Tiger Shark .52,. Will that work in the Caprise I inherited from a local "famous pattern flyer"?

Troy,

The 20% heli fuel has less oil then the 30%. 30 heli has 23% and 20 heli has 20%.

I run mine on 18% oil....the quantity is less important then getting a good low viscosity fuel to run in the engine.

Can someone quantify "Low Viscosity"? For years in the UK some of us have run all our YS engines on fuel using Aerosave synthetic oil manufactured by Fuchs Oils in Germany. We have never had any running issues on all motors from the 120 AC up to the 140L.

Now that we are converting to the DZ we are looking at the viscosity issue. To put some numbers on this:

Aerosave Viscosity: 40degC=188mm2/s 100degC=32.5mm2/s

Fuchs also do a lower viscosity oil called AeroSynth-Competition
40degC=131mm2/s 100degC=22.5mm2/s

Question is how do these figures compare with "LowViscosity" oils used in US fuel production? We've never had a bearing failure in any motor since changing to Aerosave and we would rather stick with it. What are the running issues if the oil viscosity is too high?

Regards

Malcolm H

Come on Robbie,

You gotta do better than that...stick that Royal .12 in there baby!

Just use some 50% nitro...

Oh wait you built the Caprise right?

Oh...how bout the BME baby!

Its gonna need a new home

Default Viscosity

Malcolm,

I don't know the numbers...In fact I have no clue about them. In observations the oil is thinner lower viscosity. My suggestion would be to contact Morgan Fuels and Ask them.

The DZ will run on normal pattern type fuels....I know may people that have and are doing it....The Heli fuel or low Vis. fuels seem to perform better in the motor.....If you are running it in an L it will work in the DZ for sure.....These low Vis fuels also work great in the older YS motors like the L's the FZ's and even the 63's......It makes more power and works better than the standard fuels we were using.

I have no idea about the oil contents....I have heard the 30% was about 23% oil.....I run it and let Morgan Fuels Make it....

It seems to work really well. The people at Morgan know what they are doing. Its good stuff. I'm a happy customer.....

Other fuels will and can work. Its a preference thing....I tried it and found it to be superior in many ways to what I was using before...both in performance and availability and hassle.....So I run it and tell others my results.

My opinion is worht what you paid for it....just passing some advice take it or leave it....

And Kelly I don't need your wise cracks either...by the way give me a call sometime man...got the new Bird ready to go....and since you have a real job now 5 days a week haven't seen you out there.

Troy
