I am looking for a good set of plans for a nice little modern pattern ship. Does anyone have a set of plans, or know a place I can get a set. I want the airplane to be an all wood, built up wing type. I do not mind working with foam cores and could deal with that. I have seen 2 meter plans all over the place, but I am looking for a good .60-.90 size. Any info would be helpful. Thanks for any information given. Justin.

Hi,
If you do a search here, using the keyword "plans" or "pattern plans", you'll find that this subject has been discussed a lot here, and there are many sources of plans to buy and/or download.
In the .90 size and smaller size, you might be able to buy an ARF for what it would cost you to buy what you need to build one from scratch.
If .60 and 1.20 size ships suit you, check out this site that has some classic designs from a few years ago. Most were competitive, and would still be great aircraft to fly. http://www.precisionaerocomposite.com/
And, there will be a kit available in a few months of my own design, (image attached) built around a YS .91 to 1.20. More info at http://www.nextcraft.com/j45.html
Have fun!

Hi JDP8488,...
I can definitely sympathize and understand your desire to scratch build a .90 size pattern plane. I have fought this same battle and searched tirelessly for the past year and a half looking for a good competitive pattern design that could be scratch built from plans.
In all honesty,... I can't say I've found anything with a built up wing; however I do have a few foam wing candidates for you.
My current favorite (based on looks and ease of building) is the GITANO as published in the April '94 issue of R/C Modeler magazine. The LOADED DICE II is a possibility, also published in R/C Modeler November '94 issue.
If you look in Flying Models magazine, they published the DESIRE in their August '91 issue. Of course the Boxer 90 would be an ideal answer however plans and cores are getting hard to come by for those.
In any case those are a few that come to mind off the top of my head. If you need any more suggestions or details please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Steve T.

Gerry,...
Very nice job on your Loaded Dice II. I especially like the way you shaped the cowl to blend with the spinner. That was the major thing I didn't like about the design was the way Terry Westrop had only a prop nut on the front of the plane. Even if he did put a nose cone on the front, the cowl just didn't look like it would blend in very nicely. But as you've proven things like that can be changed to be aesthetically more pleasing.
Another question I had about the design is,... what canopy does he use?? Did you use the same canopy or substitute something else??
Once again,... very nice job. Guess I'll have to give the Loaded Dice II another look!! What engine are you using in your L.D. II??
Sincerely,
Steve T.

Thanks!
I didn't feel ambitious enough to make a canopy, so I used a 15" sig military canopy - lots of cutting to make it look good. I'm not sure if anyone makes one that would fit any better.
I'm using a MVVS .91 with a purple pipe, 13x10 apc - great performance - bought it from JustEngines (great people to deal with BTW)

Thanks for the info guys.I have never had a chance to work with foam core wings. When you buy the plans, how do you get a hold of the foam cores? Who sells them? Do you have to cut the wings out. Any info would help me a lot. Thanks. Justin.

I cut my own cores - really cheap and easy to do.
Plans can be ordered from RCM.
http://www.rcmmagazine.com/e/env/000...ns-list-8.html
I did a search and found this site for cores - the loaded dice II wing/stabs are listed, although I have never ordered from them.

Hope this helps,
Gerry

Gerry,
It's good to hear about your Loaded Dice II. I recently got a set of plans and cores for the Loaded Dice (.60-size) and hope to start building it soon as my first pattern plane (er...excuse me ---pattern SHIP!). Seems to be a fairly easy build, but if you have any comments/warnings about the construction, I'd appreciate them. Privately if you want.

flianbrian,
It goes together very easy - nothing very hard.
Mine came out tail heavy - needed ~5 oz to balance, but I think that was a result of my glassing and painting, not the design.
I would suggest you get a razor plane though - lots of shaping to do.
I think the only thing I would do different if I built another would be to use plug-in wings - the 68" wing is a pain to transport!!

I have noted that a lot of pilots are at a loss as to a 90/120 size model for competiton use. I noted the same around 18 months ago and as I comment favourably on such aircraft in AMI, I set about designing such a model. To date 3 have been built and every pilot that has flown the design had nothing but praise for it.
If anybody is interested in further details feel free to e-mail me!!

Where did you get the core from?

astropuppy,
I bought them from an individual in the for sale section here at RCU I think. He thought they were from McLain cores (I couldn't find a website). Try Dynamic Balsa mentioned above.

Here are contacts for McLain and other foam cutters:

Gerry_Wiens, I have been looking at the Loaded Dice II. It looks great, and if I buy the plans, what type of motor would you suggest. I was thinking a YS 1.20, or would that be too much? Let me know. Thanks, Justin.

jdp8488,
I'm not familiar with the ys 1.20 (or any 4 stroke for that matter), however my MVVS .91 2 stroke has more than enough power. Currently I'm getting about 11K with a 13-10 apc, not sure what that works out to be in thrust, but it is plenty, I only go above 1/2 throttle on uplines. If the weather cooperates I will be testing with some 13.5" and 14" props this week to lower the RPM's.
I believe the plane was designed around the Hanno .61.
Hope that helps,
Gerry

Hi Astropuppy
The Elation is around 70" square, typically coming in at around 8 to 81/4 pounds in weight. Not sure of the area, never got round to calculating it!
Three prototypes have been built so far with 3 different power plants. All had the same superb flying characteristics.
If you would l;ike any more info let me know.

Hi Thomasr
Initial plans have been drawn and I am collating all the information gained with the three prototypes to allow a definative set to be drawn up. I'll let you know when they are ready.
