Hi all,
News just in; The FAI move to ban LIPO's on safety (fire hazard) advice from the FAA.
This may be in place in just one month from last weekends meeting.

Well,....I guess I am going to stay glow for now. I have a few upcoming electric acqusitions that will need converting I see. Any alternative for substitution packs, etc?

TNWalker,
I agree for sure,...that would put a huge damper on the World's in August unless concessions were made. I would say it's to soon to abandon ship, the majority usually rules. Since the FAA appears to be involved this could be dropped on us like a ton of bricks? However,...since I have little invested at the moment in the terms of EP, I will keep it that way until a clear and defined conclussion is drawn by a rules committe or the FAA.
In saying that,...I will still continue to acquire my electric birds (BM-VF3's) and Fliton Aircraft stuff! I will just hold off on purchasing to many EP motors, chargers and batteries.

That's funny Jon,...
I actually had one puff and catch on fire several years ago on a foamie after flying. I was on the way home and had them (LIPO's) in a ceramic bowl in the truck. I pulled over a threw it out the window and watched it go boom! So,..it is possible,..but not very common as it was the only pack I had to ever do it to that extent.
It sounds more like an FAA issue with regards to transportation and safety.

I heard they are considering the same thing for glow fuel, and gas.....all too hazardous. I think this years worlds will see the first full field of rubber powered F3A.
I already have a new design on the table to accommodate these new rules....my current planes and motors are just a front to keep everyone confused (as are everyone else's)
I guess the jig is up now, so there should be lots of new posts about the latest rubber tech that will get us through that rolling loop

Chad,
I think you are on to something with rubber power.
It could become quite lucrative when the "cap and trade" regulations take effect and the glow guys
are scrambling to buy your carbon credits.
Do you anticipate brokering them here on RCU?

Sorry Chad, they're banning rubber too....tree conservation and all.
Which leaves gliders. Whatcha think, can you throw hard enough to get through F-09?
I needed a good chuckle this morning.

Not the FAA, but the Transportation Safety Authority (TSA) has regulations on lithium based batteries:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...batteries.shtm
The latest generation of lipos if used and charged properly are at least as safe as any other battery type. But they remain very intolerant of abuse. I have over 25 large capacity lipos (4S to 6S 4,000 mAh to 6,000 mAh) and have been around big lipos for a while now. Properly handled they are not an issue.
Good joke however. Caught my eye!!

Heh... I'll bet that was an interesting few minutes - could have turned out nasty though. We still have a large charred area in the middle of our runway from a lipo incident in a "forceful landing". They're always exciting to watch when they go wrong (he says with a quiet grin as he refills his glow fuel powered planes)

Don't think rubber band power is without it's own set of hazards. I once converted a .40 size plane to rubber power that I wound with an electric drill attached to the spinner before each flight. As I was carrying it to the runway one day the wingtip slipped out of my hand and the plane started spinning while I was holding onto the prop. The wingtips slapped me in the jaw 1100 times before I got it under control.
