Default YS170 CDI

Hello,
I would like to ask those of you which already experienced it:

1) What is the "Real" additional weight added to a model by assembling CDI kit?
2) Do you use the Receiver battery or separate pack for the ignition.
3) Content of fuel?

Now, I am truly able to read specifications and vendor comments, However, this time I am interested to
get not only their comments but also comments from people like myself who pay every single dollar for their models
thus do not wish/afford to take any risk...

Thanks you
Amram

1. I think my conversion was around 4.5 ounces. I added a micro switch for security, two 1/8" lite ply donuts with aluminum button head screws for a mounting hold down, and a few pieces of folded-over double sided stick tape to the bottom of the ignition module itself to secure it. I could have pulled out my header tank since it's no longer needed, but I was too lazy to take the foam clunk and put it in my main tank. No issues here.

2. I've run the ignition directly into the receiver since day one. JR/DSM (2.4) system, and I'm running a Fromeco 2600 mAh Relion battery. That's not to say that you can't get away with less, that's just what I've always run in the airplane. 2.4 is not bothered by ignition noise. If you fly on 72mHz or 35mHz or something still, I would advise against this and run a separate pack. I know Carlos Silva (Tuny here on RCU) runs a separate pack for the ignition for his own peace of mind. If you're that worried about it, the separate pack will 1000% guarantee that you won't have issues. FWIW, my Partner has considerable carbon around the receiver and one satellite, and the only one that I've got 100% out of the carbon is the one laying on a Depron crutch in the tail.

3. Regular 20% Coolpower Heli for me. Nothing exotic necessary.

It's a straightforward engine. Make sure you time the ignition module correctly if you do the conversion yourself. You can either have it set dead on or be 180* off. I have been busy this year and haven't flown much at all. I just took the airplane out this past Sunday for the first time in three months and it fired on the first blade. It's a damn good motor, otherwise I would not risk flying my airplane with it. While I'm sponsored, I still have to pay for some things, and I promise you if this Partner went in, I couldn't afford to replace it. So if it goes in, it'll be because of me- not the motor or the radio.

1. Between 3.5 and 4 oz. Depends on your mounting of the CDI and how much of the plastic spiral cable protection you use.
2. Receiver battery, but I'm on 2.4 gHz. I wouldn't do this on 72 mHz.
3. 30% Cool Power heli fuel.

Real benefits are about 40% better fuel economy and ability to swing a 19x11 APC.

Could be under 200gr.I am using 2s 800mah lipo(50gr) for the CDI.Fuel is 10% oil , 20% nitro

Amram

I picked up about 4oz of weight with the CDI unit. I run dual 950mah battery packs into the receiver and power the CDI out of the receiver. This gives a level of redundancy on all systems. I'm running the tech-aero dual regulator setup and have been very happy with it. I seem to use about 200-250mah per flight, so I will comfortably fly 3-4 flights on my dual 900 setup before even thinking of charging. Usually after 4 flights I will charge just because thats how I tend to be. I am currently running 30% Heli and the 19X11 prop. Both of my engines now have the low oil conversion, but I still have quite a few gallons of Cool Power 30% heli low smoke that I will use first. I can comfortably fly 11 minutes on a 16oz tank with the CDI setup. With the low smoke setup I see very little smoke trail. Maybe a little more than the 10% oil guys, but not significantly more. I've been doing this for a lot of years and I can't believe that a little extra oil isn't a good thing. I will at some point try the 10% oil setup, but to this point I have not. I am not 100% sure there is enough long term data to be able to validate how long things last. With the engine I received back from YS before the NATS I am keeping track of gallons flown and am flying it exclusively on the low smoke oil. Once I get my second plane flying (hopefully soon), then I will run it on the 10% oil simply because I want to compare the conditions of the engines flown on essentially identical airplanes, identical conditions, and identical patterns flown. I think after 20 gallons or so there should be some sign if there are going to be differences in the 2 and I think this will be valuable information to have.

Hi Amran,

I ran CDi in my Proline earlier in the year and eventually settled on a 1250 mAh 2S FP Lipo, which was sufficient for three flights, lasting about 12-14 min flying PO9 using 25% nitro / 10% KL198 oil. This powered both Futaba 2.4 GHz 608 Rx / 2 of 9150 / 2 of 9151 / 1 of 9650 servos AND CDi unit with about 350 mAh to spare. Voltage reduced down to ~7.7V. I think weight on that installation was ~140g. Never had a radio problem and this was ground tested power on intially.

My new Axiome is closer to the limit and for one competition flight only, I will use a 2S 800 mAh Lipo to run both CDi and R/C. So I'll be carrying round about four of these per competition. The pack weighs 44g and goes through the standard Digi switch as a regulator. I have a small ferrite ring close to the receiver though I've never tried removing this. For practice flying I'll stick with the 1250 mAh packs.

Just weighed the ignition unit, mounting, switch and extension lead to Rx and comes to 125g

Best wishes

Keith

Thank you all for your valuable comments. The issue of assembling the CDI is now clear.
Keith, good luck with your test flight of the new Axiome. Please inform the results....
After your PM comments and some clear-ups with CPLR, I have ordered 1 piece of Axiome from Oxai.
Let hope for the best. (I will use 170DZ CDI + YS mount and Oxai nose support)
