Default B&P Associates starter

I just got a B&P associates starter 14.4 volts, and it will not turn over my OS 160, my question is can you add more batttery cells to increase the voltage and torque if so are they Nicads or NImh bateries, thanks

if the engine is mounted upside down the motor could be dead locked..mine did that sometimes, the B&P starters are known to be the strongest around, and can turn over a DZ 170 with ease.
or this particular starter could be defective.

Try using a different charger. I had to do to that periodically with mine, but then it worked great. Also, I had it lose a cell once and that made it VERY weak. When the batteries are fully charged, it'll spin a 1.60 as well as anything else,

Anything that will do NiMH, I used to use my Triton from Great Planes. I've also used the cheap one I bought from Hobby City. This past fall though, I ordered two cheap LiPo packs from Hobby City and wired them up. That starter will turn over anything now.

What is the temperature where you're using the starter?

Sounds like a silly question but it isn't.. Trust me.

Cheers
Jason.

Jason,

I've used mine in everything from 25F - 110F and never had a problem. That is until I had a bad cell. His acts exactly like mine did with a bad cell, but you are right, if it is really cold it doesnt have as much juice, but still should be plenty for what he's doing,

G'day Arch,

I used to run my starter off 2 x 7.2V NiMh packs and on a cold day (<15C) it wouldn't turn over a 1.40Rx. If I charged the batteries prior to use i.e. warmed them up, it would work fine. I then fitted a 4S 2200mAh TP LiPo to my starter and never looked back. The LiPo will last for ages between charges too. I could use it for a month and only put back in ~500mAh. Basically, it transformed my starter. It has no problems starting a big gasser either.

Cheers
Jason.

I totally agree with the LiPo change. Makes it nice to maybe charge once a month, if that. And will turn over anything. I swear after the engine starts with the CDI unit, the idle comes DOWN when I take the starter off...

You're not wrong about the idle Arch. It's unfortunate that LiPo's have such a high voltage for this application i.e. 3S is not enough and 4S is a little too much... Would be nice if they did half cells. A123 cells may be a better option due to their lower voltage.

Cheers
Jason.

There could be a bad cell in the pack, if you can give Max a call he is very good about replacing the pack and making it right

I will agree with Todd on that. When I did have a bad cell Max got it fixed quickly. They are they only starter I recommend.

I have a set of 4 A123 cells on my starter. Works great! Turns over 140-170's with ease. I looked for years trying to find a good battery pack for starters. After trying A123's I'll never go back to other types of batteries.

What size A123 pack are you using.
Thanks
