RE: CMPRO LEO 110
pls do tell me how it flies, yes i have a YS110
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Hello Snap_Roll.
I have had only one flight to reference: Power with the YS110 is adequate. With an 15X8 prop and 22% mixed Heli fuel Leo would do 3 vertical rolls with no sag going level. Have to fix the weak landing gear before the next flight. If I were starting over I would strongly consider the retract version. They have more "give". Looks better too. AW |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Allie, the YS-110 engine is indeed available at this company: http://www.chiefaircraft.com/
I just received mine last week and am going to be receiving my Leo 110 next Wednesday :) I haven't decided which header and muffler combo to use yet, does anyone have any suggestions? |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Greetings:
Exhaust?---use the stock muffler. It doesn't look cool but will save you alot of headaches. Seriously, AW |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Three of us are building three Leo's...I am the only one who has opted to install a pipe in the belly pan. If I had it to do over I would go for the stock muffler installation, as my friends did. The header still requires a significant hole in the side of the belly pan and protrudes ~ 0.75".
I, also, had to shorten the plane by 5/16" to make up for the gap between the belly pan and the fuse. I also put in a nose ring for the YS-110. I had the advantage of my friends builing theirs first, so I knew the plane was going to be nose heavy. Hence, I mounted three servos in the tail so I do not have any long push rods. Larry |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Larry, I take it you are not using the YS-110 as suggested? Was that the only reason why you mounted those servos in the tail?
Aliie, Wouldn't using the stock muffler keep the engine from meeting the quiet requirements for F3A competition? Thanks! |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Yes, I am using the YS-110. I shorten the plane to eliminate the gap at the rear of the belly pan. Turned out to be a lot of work to eliminate a gap that no one will see anyway.
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Hmmm...now I'm a bit confused. Some say the plane balances out just right with the YS110 and others have to add tail weight? I wonder what the cause for this is?
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Swade,
Remember that I shortened my plane by 5/16", that means the moment arm for the YS-110 is 5/16" shorter. Also, if you do the CG calculations for this airplane, given a 28% MAC that the CG should be farther back of the factory recommended CG. Hence, My 5 cell battery pack is placed just ahead of the fuel tank. This was needed to compensate for the 3 servos in the rear. My CG is at 6" from leading edge at the wing root. Larry |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Gotcha Larry, thanks for the clarification. I think I am going to purchase a hatori muffler and header for it, I just hope that it fits without too much trouble. I want the plane to be as close to requirements as possible, so I want the noise level down to specs. I did order a kevlar pull/pull system to put in it, but I'm wondering what to use for the elevator. Any suggestions?

RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Scott,
Sounds like you are on your way.. with the muffler system. I did have trouble with the header coming loose because I could not find a decent way to mount a support clamp from the engine to the header. I initally had a flex pipe between the header and the pipe. Now i have a 7" piece of Teflon tubing..that seems to work so far. For the elevator I used two Hitec HS-225 MG servos mounted in the rear....These are light weight and have good torque based upon using two of them. One thing I did not mention about using the conventional muffler as my friends did is that they have to remove the muffer each time the take off the belly pan, as they were not willing to cut a slot in the belly pan. Good luck! Larry |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
in stalling a ys 120 sf what pipe can i use
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Swade,
The stock muffler cuts the rasp off well enough for me. Never took a db reading though. Will take a reading later , if I remember. Ifield, Cut the slot. Well, maybe not a slot. I cut a slit in mine. the pan material flexes around the exhaust pipe. jetgod, That YS120 is going to be kinda heavy, don't you think? Maybe wide too. Allie33 |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Well, after having it for 2 years, I finally tried to test fly a Leo 110 on Saturday. My Leo has a YS120FZ, Greve's pipe, hatori header, blah blah blah. After a dozen attempts to take off I finally gave up. The small wheels, wheel pants, and soft gear wouldn't allow it to rotate from the grass for anything.
After pulling the belly pan and wing off again I discovered all the plywood formers in the front of the fuse are totally loose. The covering started coming off all around the front as well. For the amount of time it will take to pull all my gear out again to be able to reglue all the formers I'm leaning more towards buying a different airplane than bothering to fix this one. I was pretty let down, I've really been looking forward to flying this bird, I have very little spare time which is why it took so long for me to finally get around to finishing it, so then to not even be able to fly it was definitely dissappointing. I've had other CMP ARF's before, still fly the crap out of one of their 50 size Giles, never a single problem. Biggest problem I have with the Leo now is confidence, I can reglue the formers I can see that are loose, but I don't feel confident in the rest of the plane at this point, what will let go next :( |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
LGM
Sorry if you have already said somewhere, but do you have the fixed UC on this or the Regracts, the reason I ask is that I have had both on mine and with the retracts you need lots of speed and up elevator to haul this thing off the ground, it will try to nose over on the ground run also, the legs are just too far back for any kind of draggy grass operation when retracts are fitted. I have to admit, I have still got one, but it just sits in my hanger not being used as there are so many better modern aircraft in my fleet, the leo is a bit old hat now, even my SebArt Angel fly's the FAI schedule better, is cheaper to buy and much less expensive to run a highly recommended plane. RE: CMPRO LEO 110
I flew the life outta mine, I had a love/hate relationship with mine...loved the way it flew, hated the trim peeling off all the time.
I flew with a YS120fz hatori flexi header with a hatori 50/60 size 2 stroke pipe (superb) servos monted where they were suposed to be using a MK coupler at the back attached to a 6mm carbon pushrod. Had to reinforce the UC area and one very hot summer day one of the carbon legs melted! Trim peeling off and belly pan rattling lose got the better of me at the end and I gave the airframe away. |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
I am building one leo and two weeks already.. finished everything except waiting for Digital servo to arrive.. plan on using 14kg torque digital servo's all over.. fixed thundertiger 120 pro and 90 sized tuned pipe.. hope can test fly this weekend..
anybody get the latest picture of Their Leo? thanks nubli |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
How is the covering on these planes? Is it holding up for you guys?
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
The covering (i.e., trim) is poor. CA all around the exposed edges or you will be flying an all white airplane.
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
Reinforce the gear mounting block as well, and check all the glue joints in the fuse. Take a look at my post #139 for the things that happened to mine before it even took off :(
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
No, I don't have one but do know of a mate that flies it competitively in F3A pattern. He does run a 4-stroke in it but i'm not sure what it is=quite a good plane!!!!![8D]
Cheers, |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
1 Attachment(s)
this how my Leo look like still waiting for Digital servo (14kg) to arrive . look at the thunder tiger pro 120 and home made manifold (yet to be tested)
|
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
yesterday run in/broke in the engine bolted it on the model.. using 2/12" plastic spinner.. hand flick more than a dosen times.. at last it ran.. I had to run it rich for full tank.. no tachometer used yet.. I could feel the power already with 16X5 wooden prop.. looks like the homemade manifold is gonna work alright... tomorrow can tune the engine to optimum RPM and hope have gut to maiden the plane..

RE: CMPRO LEO 110
I will put an Os 140 RX , i actually have the 91 FX with OS pipe, but the power is too limitate couse i fligth at 5000 feet.
i think to move 1 servo(maybe elevator servo) ,the receiver, and the battery back to get balance.i will post some pictures when the airplane will ready. |
RE: CMPRO LEO 110
yup put some pictures checho4..
I found out the servo tray of elevator and rudder are too close.. it touched each other if I set the throw to max..cause some binding.. maybe its wise to just put servo of elevator at the at the tail, might help balancing also with bigger engine at front.. |
