RE: NEW QUEST
I put a apc 13 x 6 for break in and the first flight, It seem like it might of over rev a little but with the wind and all I am not sure, I have a 14 x 4, I think , I will try. any suggestions? also I need to cover the slots in the belly pan, fuel is getting in to the fuselage

RE: NEW QUEST
would a webra 120 be to much on this model is there room for a mueller header and macs pipe..........................thanks
|
RE: NEW QUEST
Speaking as guy who has used a YS 1.40L on his with no problems, I would guess that the Webra would be just fine. You will probably need to lengthen the back of the pipe tunnel. Can't guess on your header question, but Karl can give you any drop that you need. I ran a YS with a pipe - no problem.

RE: NEW QUEST
I have one of the new OS 1.20 AX two strokes to stick in mine. Should have plenty of power with something like a 15 X 10 prop out front. The engine with muffler only weighs 4 oz. more than an OS .61.

RE: NEW QUEST
Hot Rod Todd - I'm thinking of going the same (120AX) engine with my Quest. Are you planing to put the tank in the forward or back position? With or without a pump?
|
RE: NEW QUEST
I'm just going to put the tank in the front. With a full tank of fuel I'm ready for pattern, when the tank gets lower it's time to do some 3D. I'm using the stock muffler, so I should have good fuel draw without a pump.

RE: NEW QUEST
would a Evolution 1.6 gas engine at 2lb make a good combo for this bird, as I really like the idea of a gas motor. I fly pattern style aerobatics, no flip flip 3D stuff. thanks

RE: NEW QUEST
UPS, says mine will be here tomorrow!! What servos are fitting into the wings? Will a standard fit? Anyone have link to order Hyde mount?

RE: NEW QUEST
I just broke my quest. I was landing on our grass field, it was windy, and the wind was variable, so I came in a little fast and when the gear hit the grass it snap the whole front end off. I had the battier and the throttle servo up there to make it balance with the ST90. But it just broke in half. I had fiber glassed a strip over the landing gear ply on the inside of the fuel tank compartment, but should of glass the sides too. It was a very clean break. And it is fixable. But I think that maybe the whole front end needs to be boxed in if you are going to add a heavy motor. Those sidepieces are very weak. tg

RE: NEW QUEST
Craptech,
Do you have the Quest I or Quest II? JLK |
RE: NEW QUEST
Sorry you broke your Quest. So if you glassed the LG plate then the sides were the weak part of the front end assembly? I guess one has to do a bit of glassing or land softly as designed to do.
|
RE: NEW QUEST
It is the quest 2. I am still looking at it. I really don't think I landed that hard, I think that the wheels may of sunk a little in the grass. I think if I had not fiber glassed the gear, maybe the just the gear would of rip out. I am going to rebuild the entire front end, box it in on all four sides, this will all a little weight to the plane but maybe I can put the throttle servo and the battier back over the wing. I really like the plane. I think it is just perfect, well if it had a motor still hook to the front. Terry

RE: NEW QUEST
Taildrager, you are correct. If I were going to do it over again I would make a stronger fuel tank compartment lid and rap it in glass too. terry

I lost my D-drive and a lot of QUEST mofifications pics. Here are some that I saved that are mine and from other QUEST users.
The 1/8" lite-ply doublers shown are similar to what I did wth the three that I put together. What you can't see is that there are simlar ply doublers in front of the former the touches the leading edge of the wing. This provides great strength in the weakest area without add a ton of weight. |
RE: NEW QUEST
craptech - sorry to hear it broke. where exactly did it break? In the front (LG) compartment, front of the radio compartment, or at the front of the cockpit (instrument panel) bulkhead? Eric's idea to beef those-up those doublers look good. Will do to my two Quests. Thanks for the heads-up.
|
RE: NEW QUEST
Seth, The front compartment (fuel tank) broke off, the sides broke away from the bulkhead where the wing slot is. The wing bulkhead remained in place. There is not much material for support on the sides. And the top of the fuel tank compartment was not glued, to complete a box structure. I believe you would be ok if you put some small triangle stock in the corners and glued and glassed the top cover on the fuel tank compartment.

RE: NEW QUEST
I will be starting to assemble a Quest II soon so I am especially interested in these posts.
I am very tempted not to glue that hatch on but sounds like the prudent thing will be to do it. I wonder if fiberglass cloth and CA would be as good as glass cloth and epoxy? JLK |
RE: NEW QUEST
I got my top tank hatch held in with a screw, no real issues so far, with close to a hundred flights
|
RE: NEW QUEST
I installed a plate under the hatch; covering the front 1/3 of the opening. Opening remaining is big enough to get battery pack in. My thinking is it would tie the firewall into the side panels, increasing torsional strength. I have not flown the plane yet.

RE: NEW QUEST
Hi All,
I believe after reading this thread, I have found the pattern plane to purchase. This will be my first patten and I'm going to ask another engine question. I want a 4 stroke, but don't like the YS price, what do you guys think of a Magnum 120 on the Quest 2? It weighs 31 oz and I could mount everything as instructed and use the battery torward the rear of the compartment. Any thoughts? |
RE: NEW QUEST
Does any one know engine used in the vidoes? this looks like a kick ass bird that can be as mild or wild as you want depending on engine size installed. Great price now $200. am ordering one for this flying season. I have a 91FX but a Saito 125 might be the ticket if not too heavy. Thoughts anyone?
|
RE: NEW QUEST
You can "Buy it Now" on Ebay from Ultra R/C for $175.00. I received mine yesterday evening from UPS -- in great shape! I'm looking at a Saito 125, but I think they used a YS 110 for the video.

RE: NEW QUEST
A Saito 125 will not be too heavy. I have run the YS 1.40 on mine. Several others have done so as well. I have seen one fly well with the bigger Saito. I would sugest you fit some ply doublers if you go beyond a 110.
