Hey Pete,
In what way are you mounting the engine cowling? Your paint job is looking good and I'm looking forward in seeing how the whole thing put together. We should have a couple of V2.2 and 1 VF3 hitting the shies in about 45 days. Larry |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
I went the removable cowl route. I am gonig to try Dubro's new cowl mount.

ORIGINAL: MHester Right after it starts raining monkeys? http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOit. -Mike You must have forgot how far along these V2's are and I know this V3 is not too far from glass. One is from you and the other is from Tom Stennis that is built. Just a little minor fabrication and it will be ready for glass, paint and covering. So I'm cheating a little here. They all will have been flying and trimmed and ready for Huntsville.I'm going to use Chris's old stabs for my V3. They are about an once lighter and the hard points for the control arms are in the correct place for the deps system. The prototype stabs will be put up and saved for a later date, or if anyone needs them for dual servo setup. Now what's this raining monkeys crap. Just because it's starting to look like and jungle around here and a few banana trees has poped up doesn't mean anything. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif Lawrence Team Monkey Doody |

Paint is on and the clear is shot. Now to rub it out, install the engine, radio and landing gear. I got the kits when Chris was pregnant with our soon to be 3 year old son...man has this plane been a long time in the making. The other one is still at my buddy's house awaiting covering. Now to start on my electric VF3.
Anyone want to bet on how long that will take? |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
I'll bet it doesn't take as long as my one Pete... lol
Should have my foam today and will start cutting it up this week. Will then finish my fuse jig off. Will send you photos once it's done. Cheers Jason. |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
I hope to have it done by Sept.

Well the V2 that I'd been working on for Danny Burnham is now finished and flying. This plane I believe was framed by Mike Hester for Jon Lowe. Jon did more work to it then sold it to Tom Stennis who decided to sell it to Danny. Danny became interested in pattern last year when I had my first contest in Lakeland, FL. I let him fly an old Focus in the contest, he did very well and became hooked. When he purchased the V2 from Tom I told him I would help him get it going. The fuse is glass with PPG Concept finish and wings and stabs are monokote. I worked on this plane right along with working on my VF3 that was just recently finished. The V2 is powered with the OS 160 with the Jon Lowe conversion and Aeroslave pipe. Radio is Futaba 2.4, but JR servos. I've not flown the plane myself yet, but Danny says it flies wonderful.

RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
Hi Pete:
What treatment to the CF canopy is done to get it to shine? My BM V2 canopy has some weave that is not totally filled and the canopy has somewhat of a dull finish. Also, If I was planning on painting the canopy, a different color such as a very light blue or a silver color. Do I prep it the same as the the remainder of the airplane, that is, primer, sand and paint? Thanks. Orlando |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
I sprayed mine with a heavy (thicker than normal) coat of clear to fill in the weave a bit and give it a shine.
If you want to paint the canopy, prime, sand paint... |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
Hey Orlando,
I was taught to use the BVM pinhole filler on the canopy and prime and paint the borders of the canopy then clear the entire thing go get the carbon weave to really shine. I did this method on the V2 canopy above and also on my VF3 canopy. The carbon canopy cleared really looks nice. But all paint or clear use the BVM pinhole filler. Now I'm sure there are other methods just as successful, but that's the one I know. As far as clear goes I would recommend the PPG 2042 speed clear, DCX61 hardener and DT870 reducer. I hope this helps. Larry |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
Thanks for the ideas Pete and Larry.
I'll have to decide. Right now, I'm looking thru Mike H's website photos to get some ideas for paint schemes. I'm getting close to paint. The colors are what I have available, red, white, blue and cub yellow-all auto paint; acrylic enamel single stage. Goes on real nice, no clear required. Thanks again. Orlando |

I have enclosed a couple of photos of pattern planes that might help ;). The photos are of the following Sommenzini Yak that I did for someone here in San Antonio, my Evolution and finally two shots of my Shinden. I am in the process of finishing the paint job on my Black Magic V2 and I will post as soon as finished. One of the things I do is to go thru my model magazines and cut out pictures of planes with paint schemes or colors that I like and then generate a design from these photos. I tape the photos up to my garage wall and then desing the scheme from there. I also shoot single stage PPG (Delstar acrylic enamel) with a hardener. The Yak and the Evolution are PPG over the base white Ultracote. The Shinden is all composite. PM me if I can be of any assistance. Ed |

Here are a few more photos. The Black, White and red plane is a Dave Guerin built temptation that I repaired for a friend. The other plane is my SL -1 from about 5 years ago. Ed |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
That is some mighty fine work. I really like the yellow on white with the dark stripes on the underside of the airplane.
They are all beautiful. I will keep in touch. Thanks Ed. Orlando |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
Hi Pete:
On the application of the primer, how much of did you sand off? On my BM, I sanded about 95% of the primer off the fuselage. I am wondering if this is enough to provide a good base for the finish paint? Please adfvise. Orlando |
RE: Black Magic v2 builder's thread! *Updated*
I sanded it down until I was thin enough to see the silkspan under it in some places. Then I hit it those spots with a thinned out coat and gave it a light sanding.
