Well, got the urge to build again and here is where things ended up..
I have to comment on the quality of the laser parts and how everything fits so nicely together. its like putting together a 100 piece puzzle! The canopy goes together so quickly it surprised me... i left it in the saddle when i put in the stringer to maintain the proper distances, worked out nicely.. very rigid structure already. i am thnking about removing a LOT of extra wood in the base of the canopy.. PLEASE remember am building electric and not sure how weight will turn out so i am being over cautious on weight. The prototype with no lightening done and built totally stock with ys 160 dz in it weighs 10 lbs 10oz with a fiberglassed/painted fuse. SO.... it will easily make weight as a glow plane. |

Mark, check this out.. seen this before? hahaha, i need a dust collection system soon... or maybe i should just fly the plane and clean it more often?
hahaha , enjoy... Chuck |

OK, had to set the beauty up to get a shot as she is coming together!!!
Man i am getting excited, bottom turtle decks and some filling and a lot of final sanding should work out nicely! Enjoy... |

Did some sanding on the "spine" of the rear turtle deck.. lots of dust here, was making good time but it started rainng and need to get to the house so here you go... bitmore progress.
here are the children at rest.... Top- Insight ala me... next to the wall hidden is the biplane fuse.... then the new pentathlon... enjoy |

OK, got some more sanding done.. things are going quite well actually, quicker than the insight of last year... i could go on and on about how this plane magically goes together with the parts interlocking but i think most of the pictures can speak for me.
Here are some pics of the recent progress. Also had a chance to flip it over and afix the lower portion of the rudder. Enjoy |

OK, well, a few energy drinks, finished off that case of beer... i think i may have gone a bit too far.. what do you think????
I promise, mark said to just keep sanding until things look right.... looks good to me, but i am gonna need a smaller motor.. can you say 50% scale???? hahaha BTW, this will be available in the near future, if you are interested, pm me and we will work on geting you one. ENJOY!! forogot the pics.. duh |

ok made a bit more progress this evening.... got the lower rear deck on, and started assembling the "pipe tunnel" area.. here are some pics.
|
RE: Pentathlon Build Thread
okook, i am a little confused by the pipe tunnel at first, i figured i would just ask for some pics and maybe you can explain it a bit better.
Mark?!?!?!?! pics please.. and also i am fixing to start attacking my noze.. and i am not sure how you did it, if i fill from the outside and sand... then i sand down to nothing. sooo HOW BOUT SOME INSIGHT BUDDY.... no really, mabe some of your build pics or manual pics could clear this up some.. thanks... here is where i am at: |

ok, maybe i should add the pics... here is the basic tunnel framed up and no glue.. LOOK MA... NO HANDS!!!
hehe i love this kit. enjoy Just a note... the plywood structure in the middle of the sides.. hmm see the plywood... ok, that is the mounting tabs for the subfin.. we use nylon bolts to attach so in the event that it has an encounter with terra irma for whatever reason it will shear the bolts and hopefully lessen the dmage to the airframe. |

Chuck,
You've been making some good progress! This is very cool. As for the pipe tunnel: It can be a bit confusing because the fuse sides have very little curvature in this area and therby making it very easy to get the floor on backwards. I have attached a pic showing how the outside edges of the pipe floor should meet up flush with the fuse sides. In your case I will be very interested to see what you do with the pipe tunnel since you are running electric. As for the little holes at the nose: I filled these with some scrap 3/8" sheet balsa (use the scrap from the sheets that have your L.E.'s and Hinge caps) from the inside. I shaped them so that they protruded through the holes. I did the same in the spaces between the nose ring former and F-1. I rough sanded them flush, then went back with some light filler and final sanded. It was very easy. In the last picture you can see the remnants of the filler and the end result. Hope this helps, Mark |

Chuck,
I failed to mention....I think you're doing a good job of lightening the airframe (I overdesigned the fusebox for sure). I have a 160dz up front and the plane sits at 10lbs. 9oz. I know making weight with electric will not be trivial, but judging by your pictures, I think you have a good shot. Also, I'm sure it is of little consolation to you, but the production kits now have significantly less volume of lite ply (see pic). It should be interesting to see what kind of RTF weight you end up with on the cored out wing panels (mine as you know are solid....I cut mine by hand.... before I got the foam machine figured out :) -mark |
RE: Pentathlon Build Thread
u suck, i want a refund... hahahaha.. ne how, yes, those help out considerably... I will be putting the tunnel together this evening and hopefully have what looks to be a complete plane when i am through, i will try and throw it on the scale and see where we end up?? or maybe just wait and see...
More this evening all, thanks Chuck |
RE: Pentathlon Build Thread
Um. Wow. Mark that kit looks incredible, and Chuckles your airplane looks fantastic. I really like that foamy too. I may need one.
Keep it up!! |

Ryan, thanks so much.. and you are right, the kit is terrific, so many little odds and ends that i cant begin to tell you how much time you save not having to make those "special" pieces.
OK, got a good run at the front lower fuse section ( ala pipe tunnel) Went together nicely, then i hogged out all that i did not think was needed, and cut the weight in HALF.. then sheeted and added the same weight back, hahaha, go ME!! so here you go: |

OK, changed sanding drums, MORE HOGGING!!! YEAH BABY!!!....
Here is where i ended up with it all done! Enjoy |
RE: Pentathlon Build Thread
It's looking great, Chuck! All this progress is making me start to twitch waiting for Mark to ship my kit...Hear that, Mark? I need a fix and you're depriving me of my drug of choice.:D

here it is all taped together, (i could not help myself).. girl got some curves to her finally.. (prettier than the ole insight i must say) BUT, i know she wil perform fantastic just like the ole hag did! Anyways, enough jaw jacking.. enjoy the view. |

Mark,
I'm sorry I have not shipped your kit yet, but I should receive a batch of laser parts on Friday, or Monday at the latest. As you know, the laser vendor had a bit of an equipment problem, but all is good and back up to speed again. Your kit will go out asap. I have the foam parts, the instruction CD, c.f. stab tubes, aluminum wing studs, etc, etc. all ready to go. Thanks for your patience and I will eagerly await seeing your gasser build develop. Best Regards, Mark |
RE: Pentathlon Build Thread
ORIGINAL: flyintexan Mark, I'm sorry I have not shipped your kit yet, Best Regards, Mark No problem, I'm just giving you a hard time. I am currently swamped with consulting work again and will not get near my building board for a few weeks at least. I have been talking to Scott about some tweaks for the 46GT and will see what can be done with the "budget" engine option. Man, too many planes and not nearly enough time... Mark |

OK, had to use some extra resources to try and finish this bad boy maybe before Toledo and possibly but not looking good before temple (our first contest).
Mark was kind enough to take the wings on for me and shared a few pics with me of his process. First, he squars up all the sheets and tapes them together making a nice well-bonded sheet. then he draws out where everything is going to lay up for the carbon support and ailerons, wing tube, false rib and wing tube support. Here are the pics, mark, please feel free to chime in here. thanks again!!! |
