John
You are definetly doing something right.
Everyone don't forget Mark built John's Insight for him also. So this is the 2nd plane you've conned ( ah persuaded ) Mark to use "your" plane as the detail build thread example. :D Keep it up !!

All Hail the Creator!!

Chuck you are as aware as anyone of the Creators talents and benevolence. He is truley a wise and gracious man! If I am truly fortunate I will be able to talk him into making some replacement wings for an Impact I have that has an eating disorder.(not anorexia)

Cant wait until Temple and getting to see your new bird in person along with the usual suspects!!!

RE: Pentathlon Build Thread

I got a chance to fly the Benevolent Creators prototype again this weekend as i delivered the fuse for the addition of a beauty spot or two.

Let me share a little about the plane...

WOW.

nuff said. haha, no, seriously, i was able to fly some more, Mark has moved the CG slightly by going to a lithium battery back and i think the plane is totally dialed in right now.
I flew the entire advanced sequence for the first time ever with ease (cept for WRONG RUDDER). I guess no matter how good they fly you cant hide wrong rudder inputs.. hahahaha.

Mark is running a YS 160 and i struggle with using the throttle stick to my liking but i learned slowly that ht eplane flies very constant speeds with the YS in is.
Vertical lines are dead straight, down lines go exactly where you point it.
Point rolls require the thought of rudder if slying at a good pace and if you fly slowly obviously a tad bit more and it locks in. Inverted flight is a breath of down curently set up along with 45deg uplines... just point, roll it over and lean into the elevator.
Snaps are crisp and break well, ofcouse, so much f a snap is personal pilot setup, i over rotated a lot but when asked to stop it stopped.. not sure if i am clear, the plane flew great, i suck. hehehe

i flew in a dead cross wind today and it tracks nicely, even with the fins, its crabs gently to maintain a solid predicatable track. Stall turns are great, it does require a little (2 clicks) of power to rotate nicely i felt, i think this is because of the fins, too much and you will "crave" the stall so let the plane slow down, keep a little throttle then get in the rudder, it rotates beautifully and drops true.

I am very anxious to get the electric version in the air, i know it will slow like i want it to and allow me to present well.

More to come as the build continues... thanks for everyones attention.

RE: Pentathlon Build Thread

On a side note, we had the opportunity to compare 2 fuses in the same stage of building and the changes i made during contruction have saved me a total of 7 ounces!

I think going electric the changes were necessary but some of them i would not do if i were flying glow.. like the fuse side doublers being eliminated BUT.. I know that the new kits have been lightened to some extend already through holes or thinning the non essential parts as i discovered during my build.

Anyhow, thought i would share, later all...

Can't wait to see it Chuck :D. Sounds like you're having fun with the build (or maybe it's just the beers?).

RE: Pentathlon Build Thread

I must say Brett, if you ge a chance ( i know you are buried at school) and you want to learn or appreciate building, get a kit and take your time.

i have really enjoyed this a lot, the beer is an added bonus. I have not run into an real challenges.. seriously, only the firewall thingy in the beginning which could have been avoided if i had paid attention, but otherwise, nothing major.. just simple building techiques painstakingly put together.

i am hoping that things will come together so i can at least display the plane at Temple, and then debut in contest form at the next event.

SOME MIRACLE could ring this thing together and we might maiden the Friday before Temple if the pattern gods and other planets line up but we will see.

I have spent the last 4 hours sanding, shaping, trimming, cutting servo pockets in the wings and its almost ready to cover. i am very very excited.

i would take pics but no need just yet, a few maybe tomorrow wil sum up my progress.

RE: Pentathlon Build Thread

Well, i got through with wings this evening and had to dry assemble them to see where i was at. Ok, sorry, i have not yet covered them.

Wings, ailerons, servo ext, servo (jr811), horn, push rod and 2 clevises, and retaining bolts.

11.5 oz

YIPEE, i am so darn pumped at the way things are turning out, remember, this wing is not small... i think 550 sq approximately each? just a guess.

Anyhow, am going to try and start cutting patterns tomorrow night and begin the covering.

Ok, so i have been covering a bunch this weekend, the stabs are to a point where all i need to do is match the paint on the fuse, red at the leading edge, then some yellow swooshs (nike like) to blend to the fuse at the root area.

Here are the stabs, blue stripes on bottom. I used coverite microfilm for the black and due to outstanding availability the white is ultracote and the blue in monokote neon blue.
As you can see i have great BRAND loyalty, hahaha.

As far as some weights... stabs are identical in weight, before covering stab and elevator: 1.8 oz after 2.1 oz
note, still need red and yellow stripes.

Not to mention, i will be flying JR servos with a Futaba Reciever and transmitter and a Dualsky motor package.

moving on, pics please!

RE: Pentathlon Build Thread

the wings are coming out great. weight before covering was: 8.5 w/o ail and 9.5 covered identical to the stabs. looking nice.

i am predicting that the wings ready to fly will weight 13 oz.

Back to cutting trim.

Chuck,

How well does the microfilm covering go on? I will be interested to see it in Temple.

I guess it is finally time to make good on my promise of doing an more detailed build. Now that there are a handful of kits out there, it's time I got started. I still have a few odd things to finish up this week, but I will be getting started on the build.

Step 1

First, inspect the contents of the kit...make sure everything is there.

Have a look at all the foam parts and make sure there was no shipping damage, etc.

I start by sheeting the foam parts. I prefer to do this for a couple of reasons. The most important, being that the sheeting process can take up a good bit of workspace. Those with a big shop (and/or awesome shop like hanglider) can afford to do this while building on the wood fuse frame....read envy here.

Those that purchase the kit with all of the 1/16" sheeting will need to inpsect the sheeting and begin truing the edges of these sheets. I normally use a long straight edge and a sharp razor. You can also setup a straight edge sanding jig to do the job.

Ok, so i finally got through with covering as far as i can and things are going great.

Wings are curently at 10.6 oz with 80% covered. i figure as best i can ready to fly weight to be 13 oz each.

here are some pics of the bottom of the wing.

RE: Pentathlon Build Thread

I forgot to mention about the Coverite film. this stuf is easy to use, shrinks nicely and adheres just fine to the surface. here is the down sides.

i would not coer open areas with it, not enough surface srength.
if you get it a bit to hot it clouds as the color is absorbed into the wood.
it is so thin that even a hair from a cat can stand out under the covering, yes a piece of kitty with be with her always.

If you are fine with that, it is great, i wil use it again if weight is a factor in future builds.

o yeah, and if you think you have done an mazing jb prepping the wing .. like i had, it was the best prep had ever done, you shoud see the flaws, because it is so lite it conforms to EVERYTHING.. hehehe.. oh well, i am an amateur. it will be fine.

Thanks
Chuck

hey rc pattern flyer

what is a jr 811 servo?

rwlewis 04-10-2007 09:36 AM

RE: Pentathlon Build Thread

I ain't Chucky, but.....

JR Sport Digital Servo - Basically a digital version of JR 517 or 537.
DS811
54.0 oz/in of torque
0.18 sec/60° speed

I beleive that this servo is no longer available and is replaced by
DS821
72 oz/in of torque
0.19 sec/60 deg.

Richard, right on, the pentathlon will have its ailerons driven by Jr 821's.
originally 9.5 oz bare

i have completed the wing except for graphics... here it is: weighing in at 10.9 oz currently. servo=1.5oz leaving .6oz for servo ext. and pushrod.

enjoy.

No doubt! i wil probably flying ole reliable "Insight" at Temple. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and getting back into flying. Right now everyday is a build day intstead of mixing it up with flying days!

Hope to recieve a little package today and will share some goodies with the rest, also finish up the aileron installation.

Thanks. I used all JR 821's in my Venus2. They have been moved to a Seagull Yak54 - 90; as I sold the Venus 2 to a pattern newbie. I am really impressed by these servos. I swear my Venus2 flew better on the Jr 821s than the Fut 9202s I had in it. I had not thought of using them in a 2 meter bird; other than throttle. Should be strong enough for roll and pitch controls.

I'd reccomend JR 8231's if you can get them. A little more expensive but digital and coreless.

I'm using them on my ship for elevators and ailerons and I'm happy as a pig in the brown stuff.
