Default Pentathlon Build Thread

Here it is guys!!! The long awaited second build thread by me Chuck Hochhalter.

I know that the entertainment value of my builds always start and end with lots of head scratching, what the heck was he thinking and OMG i cant believe he got away with that screw up. I promise.. past performance predicts future results!

With all that in mind, i recieved the kit from Mark and went straight to the corner store. Thats right, the fridge was bare!

Now, back with a 20 pack in the fridge, lets begin...

Here is the end result we are trying to end up with:

Here is the basics to the kit. I recieved one box of laser cut parts, one stack of foam.
Of couse i started rifling through the box and found the stick plane... pictures to follow, i am glassing and painting, waiting for the micro-servos to follow, i figure on those foggy mornings I WILL be FLYING! Ok, just kidding but Mark does include a stick plane. very nifty.

Here is a picture of the laser cut parts, i am sorry Mark but i had already started seperating parts into piles when i remebered PICTURES.. i just want to mention that a roll of tape is used to hold all the parts in the appropriate slots when cut out to protect them, none were loose in the box when i recieved it.

Here are the foam vertical and horizontal stabs as well.

I have been lucky enough to have developed a great relationship with Mark Grohe with 2DogRC . ( www.2DogRC.com )

Here are a few picture of the power system and controller. I am very impressed with the quality of everything i have gotten my hands on.

2DogRC also carries Lipo transmitter packs (1800 and 2500mah), voltage regulators, chargers (up to 10S in series now) and an array of other electric odds and ends.

Specifically here is the nuts and bolts of my setup:

1.40 power sytem 16 turn( XM6350CA-16), 235rpm/V, 10S, 470 grams
90Amp speedcontroller 44V capability

Looks like a nice kit. Are those wing panels cored all the way through to the tip? Any pics of the tips?

Hey Chuck,

I just picked up my kit Sunday and am going to be watching this thread with great interest!! Both for the good information I'll get and the entertainment value! I am really impressed with the quality of the kit. Mark showed me his foam cutting system and it is just too slick!! I am going with a 140RX and cant wait to get her going!!! The stick plane is too cool!! Good luck with your Pentathlon and hope to see you in Temple!!

Ok, now is when i start the first humorous part of the thread.. i call it humorous cause if i didnt laugh about it i would be crying my eyes out, thanks god i am going to make this one electric... let me explain.

Mark designed the fuse to be built upside down, when it is upside down, there are laser words say "top fuse this side up" , "bottom fuse this side up".

SO.. here i go, i get out the big ole ruler, draw my line on the building table and start gluing.. woo woo, look at me go, 10 mins and the fuse top and bottom are slotted together, dead straight.

Next, test fit all the formers, landing gear plates, nose ring, nose former, wow, this thing is built and together with no glue awesome.
-Disassemble and grab the square.

Slot, tab, glue slot tab glue (squaring each piece), more slotting tabbing and gluing... look at me go, i am awesome.

well, NOTE TO THOSE WITH A.D.D. DOUBLE CHECK THAT THE FUSEBOX IS BEING BUILT UPSIDE DOWN!!!!!

so i assemble the model and stand over it proud father on the machine to be.. i rock. i take pics, i send to mark ....

THEN.. i take measurements and send to mark, he quickly slices the 3d model and sends me back the EXACT former i need to cut out. SO, off to the band saw, whack slice and dice, one new firewall for electric motor from www.2Dogrc.com and i am on a roll. ( i used birch ply for this as i fear the dreaded outrunner flex front)

SO.. then i get another email and Mark has generously taken a top view of the plane with the former in place. yes, where to cut new slots and tabs so it just DROPS in, OMG this is too easy.

Back to the band saw, more cutting, more sanding, more pride (silly me) and away i go... notch here and notch there on the fusebox....it slides together perfectly.

At this point in time i crack open a refreshing cold beverage of choice and admire my work... onto beverage # 2 as i imagine everything dropping in place but something keeps giving me that not so fresh feeling.. whatever could it be...

i measure some more before i decide to glue in the firewalls...things seem different, or at least uncomfortable, i keep having to flip marks drawings to get them to fit properly.

nother refreshment, if i keep em coming maybe things will get back to normal....

Ok, tings are just to wierd, then it hits me like a bullet train and a flyin the wrong spot at the wrong time. I ASSEMBLED THE BLOODY FUSE RIGHT SIDE UP.

Now, you might think this is no big deal but as geometry and my enthusiasm collide, i have built in 2 Deg of perfect left thrust. oh yes, i said LEFT.

How in the heck did i do that, back to marks instructions, reading the fuse tops, everything says this side up.. oh yes, another beverage to now start easing the pain...

a quick phone call to mark to let him know i am a MORON and i can se him shaking his head, why did i have CHUCK do a build thread for me... why why why

mark, you are my ambassador of Quam... anyways, more notching, shifting.. THANK GODDING I DIDNT GLUE IT.

I now have 2 deg of right thrust and 0 deg of down thrust.

So, it didnt take too long for me to CUSTOMIZE another of Marks designs, its amazing, i could screw up an arf i bet.

Anyhow... things are back on track again and away we go....

Just a few more cases.....

[8D]

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing recently. Luckily I only built the fuse sides backward, I didn't actually glue it up. just lost the fuse sides, doublers and stringers.....let this be a lesson, I wasn't drinking anything at the time!

Atta boy Chuck, I can't wait to see this one turn out!

No doubt that this thread will have extrememly high entertainment value! I have to admit though, it is easy to get carried away due to the assembly speed of the fuse frame.

Other than the upside part, the fusebox looks good. Please make me aware of any (yes, ANY) issues with tabs not fitting into notches and the like. I have found that even with a couple updated laser drawings, it is still easy to miss a small offset for the laser cutting here or there. It is usually not a big issue though as the laser burn width is a scant 0.010". However, for a nice, tight fit (), it is necessary to account for the burn width. I would like to keep updating the files so that within the first 20 kits we will have every little issue worked out.

Love the pics, keep them coming. Also, let me know if you are going to be in H-town anytime soon. I would love for you to get some stick time on mine....I know it will provide good motivation for your build.

See the pic below....I added a couple pieces of light balsa stick to strenghten the joints on those long fusetop and bottom pieces (I think I mentioned this in the build notes).

Regards,
Mark

I will be in Htown this wekend, arriving Friday night. Not sure my schedule, i have a couple of plane to test and also deliver one plane to a fellow friday night.
Maybe we can fly at Scobee early saturday?

More pics to come all.

Maybe afternoon on Saturday?....soccer for the boys in the morning. Also, I am waiting on a new elevator servo...one of mine was not centering correctly...but that is supposed to be here before the end of the week...I hope.

BTW, be warned...this is what happens to the rest of your planes after building a Pentathlon . My son was not thrilled with the idea of cleaning dad's old airplane.

Chuck,

Just in case you feel like sheeting the chin cowl...don't. Not yet anyway. It is alot easier to align the chin cowl pins without the sheeting in place. I have updated the laser parts to have the holes on the front end of the pipe tunnel already in place...but you got one of the early kits.

It's hard not to get ahead of yourself isn't it? Snapping together all those lite ply bits is kind of fun.

Uh, huhuh, huh uh huhh uhuh.. wish you had posted that 2 hrs before, as I got builders fever and sheeted it. I did my sheeting a bit differently than yours as I enclosed the center portion and left the side open. I did this for looks that i saw that i liked and without the head of an IC motor to clear/cool. So... i will however before i build the "pipe tunnel" mark the front pieces with the chin cowl so i can easily drill it out.

Thanks for nothing! hehe j/k for others building TAKE NOTE!

Here is the motor mounted to the new firewall, note that the large shaft out the back was intended for a nosering mount installation which was not practical for me so i ordered the adapter and mounted it MY way, hehehehe.

Anyhow, fits nicely and as good airflow with nice large holes in the back to allow air to pass through the motor.

Enjoy..

The Entire side of the fuselage is upposed to be sheeted with crosgrainsheeting from behind the doubler to the tail. I choose to just use a capsrip method to space the siding enough to make up for the missing sheeting. this takes a little strength away but without the vibration of a thumping IC motor we fiured it would be ok
here is a little shot of what i am refering too.

Well, just went searching fo the picture and it is not so great, i will post anyways but sorry for that! Basically, whereever there was a former , joint, top or bottow of fuse, i put a cap strip of balsa to space the fuse side the proper distance out and allow the doubler to fit properly.
