Central Hobbies (www.centralhobbies.com) stocks the "low oil" YS DZ 170. Basically, all of the "new batch" or "newer batch" engines have the low-oil parts. To be doubly sure, send email to NICOLE at [email protected] and ask tell her explicitly that you want the engine with the "low oil" parts.

As far as I know, there's no difference in "reference number" between the "normal" and "low oil" versions of the engine. It's just that the later bunch of engines have the low oil parts.

Did I understand correctly that for newer 170DZ's You only need the conversion kit? But for the older 170's You need the kit + possibly a new crankshaft if You want to run low oil? But no other parts than the kit + crank even for the older engines?

I have 2 that I purchased sometime last winter. How can I check if I have the low oil crank or not? A photo of that oil passage in the low oil crank would much be appriciated!

To my understanding, if there is a hole in the back of the crankpin, then you have the low oil version. My CDI has a hole that's about .7mm in diameter, maybe a little smaller in the crank pin.

hi guys whats your battery connection on you CDI, do you connect the CDI unit directly on spare the battery. How do you stop the engine. My Japanese friend told me that his using electric switch for igniter which can be controlled by aux control in the TX. Any idea where can we buy this gadget. Any suggestions?

I got information elsewhere that also the cam followers need to be replaced for "older" engines to run low oil, in addition to the crankshaft.

yepe, I believe at least Emcotec has such units, probably other manufacturers as well. Check:
http://shop.rc-electronic.com/e-vend...=6&c=541&p=541
http://shop.rc-electronic.com/e-vend...=6&c=541&p=541

The cheaper one is just a switch, the higher priced one has a built in regulator. The regulated unit might be handy, I do not think the YS CDI unit is rated for 2S lipo? I have no experience with these, but I have been using the other units in the same DSPI Micro line for the Rx in my pattern planes.

Hobbynet in Japan lists them, but they don't apparently have any in stock. I tried to place an order, but haven't heard back.

RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report

Hi Torben!

No, this is the old type!
It should be a smaller hole in the crank pin going in to the rear bearing.
On yours you can see the lubrication hole beside the crank pin that's going to the rear bearing.
There should also be a hole going 90 degrees from the crank pin to lubricate the connecting rod.

The connecting rod has also a bit larger lubrication holes, but that is not critical!

Is the conversion available yet,..everytime I've asked its' still undergoing field testing? If it is available, does anyone know what the price is and where can I order one in the USA? I would assume Central Hobbies,..but you know what they say about assuming.:D

Well it's true isn't it? I thought you guys would get a kick out of that. Don't worry, my 2 new airplanes will have DZ 170's in them. Of course I still have a few with OS power "just in case". LOL

Bill.

Yes, the Conversion Kit has been released by Yamada and it’s available (at least in Sweden)!
Sorry, but I don't know where you can get it in the US....

Bill,

The conversion kits will be in the US soon. They haven't quite made it yet, but they are on their way. Richard at YS is hoping to get them in the next couple of weeks.

Well, what can I say Torben. Your new Airplane is a very nice one too.
Hope it flies as well as it looks.

PS. The drilled holes on the low percetage YS 170 is 0,7 mm and not 7 mm.
