Wow, lots of good info and a really neat engine but I'm suprized nobody mentioned prospark yet... I put one on a saito 180, helps out a bunch with the vibration and fuel usage... not to mention it runs great on low nitro fuel. Not that it's a powerhouse or anything but I don't need to feed it 30% anymore just to make it run right.
Might make a good retrofit on a YS160.

Great feedback, Bill. Obviously the motor is burning the fuel more efficiently now - do you think we'll see a lessening in the carboning of the exhaust valve?

The tuner of the engine isn't fighting preignition that is caused by the glow plug by running a richer mixture. Spark allows you to lean the mixture far more than a hot glow plug that needs to be quenched in order to prevent preignition.

The CDi kit must be availible by now!![:o]

Does anyone know the weight that is added when fitting the CDi Kit?
And what does the kit include?

Wally,

The CDI ignition system adds 4.5 ounces according to a recent article I read in the US AMA magazine. One would still need to consider whether to power it with the RX battery or stand alone battery.

Here's a link to a review....[link=http://www.patternflyer.com/troy/?p=89]YS CDI[/link]

A stand alone battery is recommended. A 2 cell Li-Ion is a good way to go. The extra 2-3 ounces is worth it and if you are fighting weight, shave the 3 ounces somewhere else

Thanks Guys

So i can use a 2cell lipo directly, no regulator? about 800mah?
10% oil LV (or normal HV?) 20-30% nitro
and a 19*11 apc?

I want to get the CDi kit as i already have a 170DZ. Does it include all the extra parts for use with low oil?

Thanks:D

Yes about 9 percent oil and I run it rich. The engine smokes some on takeoff after its idled for a while but in the air it’s really not noticeable.

Don
Hi Don

I used 11% LV oil and 30%nitro it works great. A bit careful on amount of oil?

Please tell me the mix and prop that works for u?:) Or any one else for that matter??

Thanks
Wally

Caution:

It is my understanding that the CDI unit by itself does not allow the use of lower oil content. The CDI motors that are currently using lower oil content have had other modifications than just the CDI unit.

The easy way to tell is to pull the cam cover off, there should be a spiral groove on the cam follower if you have the low oil version. To me the pic in post 132 doesnt show a cam follower!

RE: YS-170CDI Flight Report

I have confirmed with Y.S. Service here in the U.S. the following:

The lower oil set-up includes a different crankshaft and cam follower, some of the newer 170's already may have these items in place. You can tell if your your motor is set-up for lower oil content by looking at the cam follower and crankshaft. The newer cam follower has a spiral cut on the side of it and the newer crankshaft has a hole on the back of the crank pin. I'm sorry that I don't have any pictures to post.

The CDI conversion unit has a new head to accept the spark plug and spark plug cap.

Hi Yepe

What kind of fuel do you use ? % nitro , % oil ?
Thanks
Claude

Yepe,

Try and get another picture a little more in focus, it's hard to see the back of the crank pin.

And what kind of fuel are you running? My DZs never look like that on the inside. Mine are always a honey brown color, and never have any buildup.

Guys i'm using coolpower 30% heli blend with 23% oil neddle valve setting 2 turns. This engine has not run for 4 months after CAOCC in Taiwan I run dried the engine did not put any lubrication on it. What do you think of my engine? shall I lubricated it with Mobil synthetic oil before storing it. Please check the new attached picture I don't know to check if this engine can run with low oil content fuel.

Been running the CDI for 10 liters now and I have to say :D:D brilliant

Only use 8 ounces for a P or F flight and with a 19x11apc at 7500 rpm only use half throttle for most manoeuvres

My question is: The plug gap, what should it be?? I do get misfires sometimes
