What particular plane are you interested in? there are 3 different planes on that page.. I'm guessing you want the Top plane? The color of that plane is PC10 like the others on that page. Both the right and left side of the plane should be the same with the same lettering and graphics. The bottom of the plane wings will be Natural Linen in color, most likely the entire fuse will be PC10 but I'm not sure about that. As you can see by the picture the stab and fin are white as are the wheel covers.
Sorry I don't have any more info on that particular plane. I have several sources for the SE5a but the information I have on that plane is the same as yours (the windsock book).
I hope you don't me posting a picture of my SE5a. Its the bottom scheme, I reproduced the French finished SE5a scheme of that plane which is a little different (a later version of that plane).

Hi Bobh,

I've been following your SE5 build on rcscalebuilder, you have made a masterpiece!Pitty about Toledo, but you had my vote there.

In as regards the US se5 I wanted to produce a colour scheme of something not usually modelled and i thought that one looked nice,Im trying to get some details particularly of the right hand side of the aircraft.

Im much obliged for your responce, have many enjoyable fight with your se5

Loukis, thank you so much for watching my build over on RCSB. I do hope you enjoyed it and thanks for the vote of confidence about Toledo!!..
I would be willing to bet that the right side of the plane looks exactly like the left side. The SE5a at the AF Museum in Dayton Ohio is a restored plane of the early American squadrons. On that plane both sides of the plane are the same. So a very safe bet would be for you to paint both sides of the plane exactly alike. You'll be on safe grounds and I don't think any one can challenge you on that.
What kit/ plans are you using for your plane?.. Thanks

Hi Bob,

I stumbled across the example at the AF museum thats a potential candidate also.

Im building a club scale model of the se5 using a flair kit but highly modified, i changed the kit's semi cymetrical airfoil to an undercambered section and certain other cosmetic changes.

Will post some photos when i get round to finishing it.

lukos,
Try posting this question on The Aerodrome. Somebody there is sure to have something for you. They live for this.

Loukis, a friend of mine flies the Flair kit and it's a good flyer. I do have seen the AF Museum plane in person several times. It's identicle on both sides of the plane so you only need the view of one side to get you going. Yes please post some pictures when you get things going.

Thanx papermache ive just registered will go on to post something there, those chaps might have some other interesting schemes.

Bob, I will post pictures when i manage to understand the issues between my new computer and old digital cam[sm=spinnyeyes.gif], the plane has been an ongoing project since my university years in the UK and a string of exams and now the office have left it in the rafters for a while. Its finally complete and covered only painting and some detail remains

As a sidelight to this discussion, I have an old book about Ray Brooks which shows a drawing for a U.S. SE-5 with yellow wings and tail. It was a plane flown by Brooks in the 94th Squadron

Frank Tallman wrote a book called "Flying the Old Planes" that has photos, at least one in color, of an SE-5a restored to 1920s colors--yellow wings and stab, olive (not PC-10) fuse, very large star insignia on the wings. Jim

Published by Doubleday, 1973. I had computer trouble that left me unable to do scans for now, so I can't send pics from the book. But if you like WWI types this would probably be worth your while to search out on the internet--there have to be old copies out there.

Tallman was a Hollywood stunt pilot who flew an amazing variety of planes, from a 1910 Bleriot to Al William's Gulfhawk, including most of the famous WWI planes. The book is full of excellent photos and Tallman's descriptions of flying characteristics.

If this is for contest purposes, you'd be modeling a modern reconstruction. There is no documentation of the color scheme provided in the book, though it shows Air Service registration numbers. The SE-5A was used as a fighter trainer; Lindberg mentions flying them in "Spirit of St. Louis". There are no machine guns. Jim

Hi Jim

you seem to have all the facts there! ill run a search to see if i can find a copy of the book.

The plane is not for "masters" competitions its more for club scale, as its rather small (52").However i wanted to deviate from the RFC examples, any SE5 you see is of that colour scheme.

The Stars on that top SE-5 where not applied until 1922 , there fore not WW -I and definatly not that yellow and olive scheme ,a early National Guard color of the early 1920's. All US aircraft used only red, white and blue roundals during WW-I

Tom, that's correct, as I explained in my first post, it's a 1920s scheme; but Loukos didn't ask for WWI colors only. The scheme appeared on British-built SE-5As that were rebuilt here by Eberhart Steel to serve as fighter trainers for the U.S.A.S.

Loukos, do keep us posted. I was thinking about the Flair SE-5A myself. I bought Flair's Taube for a friend and it had excellent wood and built into a light model that looks so much better than the Balsa USA Taubes, even though it is certainly not true scale. It has an 80 inch span and it is overpowered with an old Saito 45. I've heard nothing but good things about Flair kits. Jim

Yup im not after a WWI scheme per se any nice and different scale scheme will do.

Buzzard bait regarding the flair kits, i have built this one, their 1/4 scale ASK glider and i have their fokker d7 in the attic. Now they are excellent flying kits you will never hear anything against this, however it depends how lucky you are in locating a recent kit as the older kits were die cut and at some points i think some of their blades were a bit blunt....the ASK being a recent kit was excellent, my SE5 was bought a while back, and i can almost say i have scratch built that one, i changed almost 80% of the parts. Will post pictures when i start painting in a few weeks....sorry for the delay

Ah, thanks for the warning. One for five on the parts must be pretty disappointing. Jim
