I am a Futaba guy so keep that in mind when answering.... I have purchased my first large project (yes, Sigs 1/4 scale Cub, Clipped) and want some experienced input to the correct gear; inparticuarly, servo size and strength. I will go with a 5 servo setup but don't want to get too small or overkill on torque.... who has had good luck with their equipment and what is it???
Thanks.
Thanks.

Most all radio companys supplie 1/4 scale servos. I would think ypu could use any of them. Just depends how much money you want to spend. But remember not to skimp on servos buy the best you can afford. There is no danger in getting a servo that is a bit overpowered... way better than the other way.

When I flew my Sig 1/4 scale clipped wing, I used a servo on each elevator half. Actually, it's a good insurance practice for any plane.
Take a look at the HiTec HS 425 BB, or the HS 625 MG. Big torque in a standard size package. And of course, they are Futaba compatable.

Both my Cubs have 5 servos and the transmitters are Futaba. I'm with GeeBeeJim all the way on servo selection, the models in the pic have; HS645M for the Rudder (pull pull) and HS645M for the Elevator (pushrod), HS425 for each aileron and whatever for the throttle. Battery packs are homemade 2300 NiMh AA cells from Costco. My only issue is a sluggish roll rate but I'm not sure if stronger servos will make a difference.

For what it's worth ............. I have always used parallel packs in my giant scaley's. Usually two 1300 mah packs in parallel to equal 2600 mah total.

These pics show the rudder pull pull. These aren't wooden Cubs but the installation is straight forward. Cables are kevlar (Sullivan 30' kit) and the battery is Sanyo 2300 NiMH from Costco (I soldered the AA cells together myself). Rudder horn is a Sig HS716. The HS645M servo is definitely strong enough for the rudder because it'll knife edge all day long.

My SIG 1/4th Clipped wing Cub has been flying with all standard JR servo (517 type servo) for the last 15 years. Has a 120 engine (2stroke) and do mild aerobatics (Top hat, inverted, loops and rolls). Last flown was 2 days ago. Never had any problem at all. It is one of the veteran planes of the club!

Thanks guys, keep the pics and info flowing.... I think I heard Sullivan pull-pull gear with an HS645 for power. I like the double battery pack idea, two 1300 packs; are those all 4 cell setups? Where is the best place to get reliable battery packs? Is Tower as good as any? Do the Sullivan pull-pull systems have simple setup directions? I do not want to lose this kit over a faulty setup.
I would like to see Gary's pull-pull setup if possible also.

Well, I bought two HS645's for the rudder pull-pull and the elevators...... does this kit (SIG) require two servos for the elevators? I had planned on using only one but I will do what previous fliers have had the best luck with.... I will use HS425's for the ailerons and probably a standard for the Throttle.... any concerns?
I also bought the slimline snaplocks for the connectors... I read a good review on them from kit builders forum.
What is the best tailwheel setup? Might as well keep all my questions going.....

I used a HS 425 BB on each elevator half, great little servo. Yes, I use dual 1300 mah, 4 cell packs, along with two seperate switch harnesses for insurance.

I had a 1/4 Cub a few years ago. I put a OS 120 twin in it. What a sweet put-put. Four standard servos except for a 70 inoz on rudder for a bit more than scale flight and aerobatics. I use 1000 ma 5 cell packs in most of my planes.

Actually dual elevator servos is a good idea...otherwise you have to make a bloody big hole through the fin post for the elevator joiner......building covering and installation would be much easier as well.
Great Planes makes a great scale tailwheel..pull pull as well
