RE: Albatros DVa
Cockpit is done except belt buckles. I put it up on the wheels today!!! I need to make the tail skid and rig it and it is done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I plan to fly it for at least a gallon without the spinner to maximize cooling. Attached are CP photos.

Hi Dave,
Those look really sweet! Can I ask about your masking? How did you get such clean lines from blue tape? It always seems to bleed a bit for me. I've been using electrical tape lately and that has worked well, but you have to remove the tape really slowly. Also, what kind of paint did you use?
It certainly looks amazing!!
Thanks,
Franny

Hi Franny,
First off the lines are not as clean as they might look in the pictures. The white came out fine but I didnt seal down the tape very well for the black and it found its way under a bit. Dave J fixed this with a bit of thinner magic. The trick to this is going over the edges of the tape with a finger just before spraying. Seal down the edges of the tape with pressure and then spray light coats. I always get some bleed when I paint but I bet the germans did too . I use dope for all of this. The stuff we used on the albatros is sig but I am going to start using randolph from wicks aircraft supply. It is cheaper by a bit and since Dave J and I are building together we buy in bulk. We already buy our clear dope by the gallon from wicks.
Regards,
Dave S

Holy cow! By the gallon! Now that is serious!
Thanks for the info. Here is a photo of my little DVIII. It was my first time with a paint job like this and, after a few trials decided on electrical tape for masking. The edges are really clean (actually better than the photo). I was amazed. Usually the blue tape makes a huge mess - at least with all my house remodeling paint work. So aggravating! So, just a thought. Oh, it stretches really well around complex corners and curves, just don't leave it on too long and remove it really slowly with a constant pull. I did see at the paint store there is a green tape that is supposed to be better than the blue. I haven't tried it though.
The paint is Krylon for the yellow and Master Models I think for the black.
Thanks again for all your posts! They are really helping me add detail to mine. That engine is too cool not to go a little nuts. That's where I am now...

I never tried it on fabric but I use paint mask film it gets into every nook and cranny and leaves a nice perfect line. the only prob is make sure you have a thick enough covering on it

Hey guys after u apply the tape, take a small brush and (lightly) seal the edge of the tape with the same paint your masking off. The paint that bleeds will be the same color as the color under the tape and the edge will be sealed, then apply your other color. With the Lozenge I just use a bit of clear dope to seal the tape. Have a great day.

Ok, Ihave a bit more progress on my airplane. Ipainted the white part of the crosses on the fuse and tail. Built some hatches and cowl panels and started putting the engine together. Also got a start on the cockpit combing. Here are a couple of pictures.

Igot more painting done the other day. All the white except for the stars is on the fuselage. Here are some pictures that show the results. The moon shape was damaged a bit at the bottom when I pulled up the tape. And there are some bleeds where the panel edges leaked but other than that it came out all right. The other side came out perfect. I can touch up the left side of the plane with a brush. All in all not bad.

Nice dave too bad abt the paint but it can be touched up. Ilike that scheme too. Iam decideding whether to do a DVa or the DII when Iget done with my Albatross series which will have the DI, DII, DIII, and DVa all on one planset since they so close to each other

Hi Prof.
This scheme is Hans Waldhousen's airplane from Jasta 37. Earnst Udet flew a similar plane ( on the cover of the Osprey Albatros Aces vol II) that Ilike also. Everyone does Udet so I chose this scheme. Ijust love the wood fuselages and lozenge wings. Iplan on doing another wood/lozenge airplane next. You have to love the DV. It has such nice lines.
I will do the paint touch up in a few days. Other matters have slowed my progress on the airplane. Getting close though.

Since the wings are covered in Lozinge fabric, matching colored paint at the paintline might be more work then just using clear dope to seal the edges. I have used this method for years with good results and clear dope you guys have by the gallon!

RE: Albatros DVa
Ihave heard about the method of sealing the tape edge before. I just have never tried it. The bleeds Ihave are not too bad and can probably be cleaned up fairly easily. The big flaw is on the bottom of the moon where I pulled up some white when Iremoved the tape. I think there was too much paint there and Ipulled the tape off wrong. A little brush touch up will fix it. All in all I am fairly happy with the markings so far. They will look much better when Iadd the black of course. There are stars inside the moon marking that Ihave yet to apply. They are black with white borders like the other markings. The stab is white with black stripes. The unit marking of Jasta 37.

Ilike using liquid masking film to do markings. its really great for getting in and sealing things off. you just need to make sure you have a thick enough coat on so it will peal off easily.

Ran it up last night. After undoing a case of the stupids, it ran like a top. Gotta love a new engine that hand starts in a couple of flips!! Maiden tonight if it doesn't rain. i will be flying Austrian style without the cone as it isn't cut yet.
