RE: Albatros DVa
Thanks ScaleGuy,
I hope to make it out to a couple of Dawn Patrols with Dave J this summer. Hoosier and the one in Cincinatti are on the list. Also hope to compete some. I am really looking forward to getting this ship finished and flying. Anyway, I will see you at one of those events I am sure.

Put together some detail parts for the ammo cans. Picture attached. It is dark. If I use flash it washes out the image. The aluminum tube is supposed to simulate hinge. It should look better after I add some glue drop rivets.

Hi Jim,
I work in the basement and the lighting is not too good. It is one of the things I should fix. The basement if finished though and Barb would not want me hanging shop lights all over the place. I got the detail bits glued on the ammo cans last night. They still look like bits of paper and tube. It will look better once it is painted.
So have you started a winter project yet?

Hey Jim,
I dont think I will be much help. Any of those airplanes would be great. I have to tell you though I have seen Dave's 1/3 spad fuse and it is going to be a beautiful ship. He has the other fuse just sitting there. It is a great chance to build a really neat unique design. Dave's will be more scale than the Balsa USA version I am willing to bet.
I have always like the Sopwith Pup too. BUSA makes 1/3 and 1/4 ( 1/6 too but that is too small ). I have seen several BUSA pups and they are neat. I will have one of those too one of these days.
See, I told you I would be no help. You know, I am interested in WWII models too but I wonder if I will ever get around to building one since I am having so much fun with Dave in WWI land. There are just so many WWI subjects that can be built without the complexity and expense of flaps and retracts. WWI observation planes and bombers in 1/4 scale would be awsome. Dave has plans for a 1/4 LVG that would have a 10 ft wingspan. That would look sooo cool in the air. I would go broke buying the Glen Torrance Lozenge fabric for it though. . Maybe next winter.

D.J. Well that sound’s mighty tempting. But I don’t know if it would fit in the back of my Pickup? [&:] !/3 scale? OH Boy!!!. What would the fuse length be? I only have that short bed you know! But, maybe? I need to get together with you and look this baby over. 1/3 scale. You guys are a bad influence. [>:] No Dave you where not much help! Pushing me towards 1/3 scale you Aught to be ashamed Jim

Jim,
Once you are used to looking at 1/3 scale models the 1/4 scale stuff really does look small. This coming from a guy that used to say he was not interested in giant scale. At the moment I think I will stay with 1/4 but I have made such irrational statements before.

This from my own plans based on data files Albatros special. It is essentially my 1/3rd scale reduced in size with slightly changed structure. Bhole, you are correct as it is a actual monocoque(sp) construction. The formers are slid onto a square piece of Al tube on temporary cross pieces and once about 2/3rds of the sheeting is on, the tube is removed. there is a 1/8th ply box built into the nose which ties the firewall, struts and landing gear together. Very very light and strong.

Dave & Dave,
You have both inspired me with your beautiful hand-crafted models. I think I need to hang up the flying erector sets and try my hand at some real modeling.

Wilson,
Thanks for the link. Those photos are also on another site but it in German so I have trouble finding my way around it. I am making a 1/4 scale OFFAG DIII (late 153 series) from DJ's plans. There are a few subtle differences between the Offag and Albatros built machines so take care when using the photos.

RE: Albatros DVa
I am not sure if I should ask here or start a thread. So I will ask. I need to know where I can find the size of many things such as the size ot the tubing for the wing struts, landind gear and wing attachment fittings and others. If I buy a document package will I be able to mesure these things? Do I need 3 veiws? If so where can I buy these. thanks

Check out the GTM website. He has these in scale sizes and they are strong enough by themselves for flight and landing loads.

RE: Albatros DVa
Ya thats the stuff. Thank you. Any ideas for turnbuckles and flying wires stuff. I have been making my attachment fittings (landing gear, cabanes and V struts) but do not want to start making turnbuckles. I have been searching but all I seem to find is for full scale.

Every time I check this forum I want to take my stuff out back and burn it.
Dave J:
I still don't see where you have time to do all this building?? A new 1/3 scale Spad, I hear that there may be a couple of these at 2009 HDP????
Wouldn't have any 1/3 scale SE5A plans laying around?
BTW: The 2009 Edition of the Hoosier Dawn Patrol will be August 21,22,23, 2009 at the AMA site in Muncie, In.

RE: Albatros DVa
Thanks guys. I did find the proctor site last night and it looks like they have what I need. For some reason I had not heard anything about proctor for years and thought maybe they did not exist anymore. Glad I was wrong. I will also check with Glen at GTM.

Dubro has 1/4 scale steel turn buckles part # 300 and are about 1 1/2" long. They may work for you at 1/3 scale also. Have to measure the length.
On my plans the turnbuckles ( turnbarrels) and such are not shown. On the Proctor website they are listed in inches not scale. How do I measure. I suppose I should have done my research first, but I did not. I have never built WW1 before so sourcing the info and items is new to me. Actually I never built scale anything before except out of the box. I do apreciate the time that you fellas take to post and answer my questions. Thanks again Mike.

RE: Albatros DVa
Mike, Dave Johnson will be able to tell you what size turnbuckles to use. How about it DJ the next time you look in? I also think DJ will steer you toward the steel instead of brass turnbuckles.
