RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Anthony,
Coming along very nicely. It looks like AMR has significantly improved their glass work. The wing fairings on my were almost useless. They were very distorted and a real pain to get them to fit. I put them on before covering and always regretted it. However, they were so bad I had little choice. I really like your idea about fastening with #2 screws. That's going to look very clean.
Looking at the anchor for the forward flying wire (just above the landing gear) I am reminded of a problem. Since the anchor is not in line with the flying wire, there is a significant flight load that is trying to pull the anchor straight. I kept finding the forward wire loose after a couple of flights although the locking nuts were still tight and didn't realize what was happening. The anchor was slowly cutting into the fuselage and realigning itself with the flying wire. I ended up removing the landing gear and encapsulating the anchor in a small block of white oak and epoxy. It hasn't move since. Just food for thought.
Best,

Thanks for the tip Bob,
I was a little concerned about that myself. I will take your advice and I will add a block over top of the strap. Overall my glass parts fit pretty good. They do take some coaxing to get them to straighten up and lay in place correctly but the screws should do a good job of that. The installation should look very scale. I should have approx. 400 screws holding all the glass parts on when it is all said and done. I am drilling a small hole through the glass and into the wood then taking a #43 drill bit and drillling a hole through the glass for clearance. I am hardening all the holes in the wood with thin CA. I may even install some 1/4" dowels in certain locations to have something more substantual for the screws to bite into.
Later!!

It sure is a great looking aircraft. Keep up the good work.
I really enjoy seening an airplane in the bare bones without covering. It really makes an individual appreciate the work

I live right outside of Nashvillle in Hendersonville. I'm the President of the Hendersonville RC Club. Grew up in Oak Ridge. The temp here is going down to around zero and I have no heat in my shop so I have to wait until it warms up a bit before I can start my build. I see you have done a lot of work in a short period of time. Hope I can move that fast. I'm going to hang a DA 150 on the front end along with smoke. Will build it after the Waco documented by Air Borne Media. When do you think you will have some more updates on yours.

When you get a chance, tell George Quinn hello for me. Is Jeff Jordan still a member? I heard from Fred a few months ago, but I can't get in touch with Percy. Keep them on the dry side of the island. George told me that they had built another picnic shelter down by the boat ramp. That will make it a tad tight for the 33% Waco, but I guess you can do it. Just don't let Bill Carroll make any passes at it while you are on the maiden

Howdy Neighbor. I hadn't noticed that you lived in Howey. Sure is cold here this morning. I went out to the shop about 5 to work on my baggage compartment hatch, and nearly froze to my chair. We ain't supposed to be this way.

Hey Bill
I regret to say that George passed away on Christmas Eve of cancer. Jeff is still a member of the club and is the secretary. He will be doing the maiden on my Waco. Saw Fred last night at our meeting, still hard of hearing. Persy just had a hip replaced and he is doing fine. He was at our meeting last night. Yes they did build a shelter by the boat dock for about 100 people. It should not present a problem. Just come in on approach between it and the water and your fine. I don't fly when Bill Carrol is in the air. He may be old but he is a wild man. Good pilot just wild. We will be having a memorial airshow for George this October. We hope that a lot of pilots show up. George new a lot of people in all the surrounding clubs. He was an awesome modeler.

Anthony,
It is looking great. I'm almost to the point of braving the cold and starting mine. But at my age the cold and I do not get along very well. You are an imspiration.

Hey Bill seeing as you know so many of the club members thought you might like to see some of them. Our club produces a 30 minute TV show that appears on a local Hendersonville station. The shows can also be viewed from our web site, http://fly-hrcc.org/. On the home page you will see a TV and under it is a link to each show. You can see Jeff, Bill Carrol, Fred and Percy in these shows. Hope you enjoy

Lonnie,
That is a 657 Robart strut, I am happy with how it fits and looks in the plane. I changed the control arm to a dual control arm for pull/pull operation. I just got home from work and I am going to work on the Waco some more. I have a 11x17 room in my basement for building so the temp is not an issue for me. I did have a nice big 13x25 room down there but I gave that up for a Home Theatre.
Trimming the fiberglass parts for proper fit is tedious work.

Lonnie,
George was my best friend. I talked with him about the first of December. I'll give Joyce a call. Dammit! Back when he was a young man, and I was just a kid, he would give me a ride out to Edwin Warner so we could fly, or go flying out back of the Chocolate Shop off 8th Avenue. Lord, I hate to hear that. He had several of my old planes. You have probably seen them.

Bill sorry for the loss of your friend,
Cutting on the fiberglass parts makes me nervous, I measure and check 10 times then cut. I have the length of the hood cut and the rear cockpit cutout complete. I trimmed the nose bowl and it needs just a minor adjustment here and there. It snugly fits over the formers and the stringers on the sides perfectly, should look very scale after covering and final mounting. I will be adding wood for securing the mounting screws for the nose bowl. The cowl mounts to the nose bowl so it must be secured very well. I also need to add some strips for the screws to secure the turtle deck.
Of course a few pics of my progress.

I almost forgot,
I ordered 500 #2 screws yesterday for attaching all the fiberglass parts and I also ordered LED lights for the navigation lights with Kens assistance. He was nice enough to send me a schematic with the part#'s I would need to build the lighting system. The LED's cost under $3 and I will pick up a diode at Radio Shack, they will be powered by an empty channel on the receiver.
Here is a link to SuperbrightLEDS if anyone is interested. [link]http://www.superbrightleds.com/[/link]

Bill, of course I didn't know him but I know how awful it is to loose a good friend and flying buddy. This has happened several times to me. The older we get, the more it happens.
The plane is looking great Anthony. Here is the schematic that I sent Anthony if anyone is interested.

hi
looks good.
Just remember the 1/3 rule. Air in Air out. !/3 in 2/3 out. How is the air going to get out at 2/3rds. looks a bit to close to the fuse. Did the same thing and almost cooked my DA 150. was lucky someone checked the temp on the first flight. Had to open it up for the second flight.
Also got some ideas on the bottom of the fuse to get it closer to scale.

Hey Anthony
Thanks for the info on the tail wheel. Got it on order today. I'm collecting a lot of stuff for this bird. I like to have as much of everything I need up front rather than waiting on it during the build. Are you going to use a power distribution system in yours. I'm thinking I will go with battery backup and dual recievers. Just need to figure out which one.

TR,
Glad to see you have popped back in. That is the boot cowl (cowl at the firewall) that Anthony has shown fitted. The Engine cowl (according to Anthony) fits in front of and is attached to the boot cowl. The Modern Wacos from WCA have an optional wide cowl that I believe is 2" larger in diameter at the rear edge than the standard cowl to help with the cooling. The front diameter is the same and you really have to look close to see the difference but it is there.

TR,
John beat me to the reply I will make sure I get ample cooling. I will block off sections of the cowl to get as much air as possible across the cylinders.
Lonnie,
I plan on using dual receivers and splitting the plane left and right so If I lose one receiver I will have reasonable control. I still have to work out what battery setup I will be using. It looks like I am making good progress and in a way I am but things will slow down in a hurry shortly when I start adding all the detail work.
I didn't get anymore done on the Waco today as I took the wife shopping and out for dinner. I decided to take the day off from going to work tomorrow and I will try to knock out some more on the Waco and watch a little football.
Later!!

I am working on the fiberglass hood, I remounted the top cabane and I am marking the locations of the cabane strut wires to cut clearance in the hood. I had to remove a section of the hood support at each wire mounting location. I will box in around where the wires mount to give something for the covering to adhere to and to attach some aluminum plates that will dress it up once finished.
I think I will mount the wheel pants next and get the plane assembled up and see how it is looking.

This is the 1st time I have installed the wing panels with the center sections mounted to the fuse and all I can say is WOW!!! This plane is huge[8D] The only space I have in the house big enough to assemble the plane is in my home theatre and getting far enough away from the plane to get it all in the picture is a challenge. I am really happy with how the plane is looking so far. Sorry about the dark pics but my home theatre is dark by design, black ceiling and screen wall and dark red everywhere else with dark grey carpet and recessed lighting.
Here are a few pics.

Thanks Ken,
I need to cut the axles to length before I can mount the wheels and pants so I will save that for another day as I am running out of cutoff wheels. I will get them marked up and take them into work and cut them to length on a lathe.

Here is what I did with Bobs plane for top gun. I took a pair of Peter Barth's fairing and increased them. They were two small. Interesting thing happened at installation. They stopped the pants from rotating. So beef them up with fiberglass to handle the strain. Really stops rotation.
Also here is what a Old Marine looks like.
