Default Horner tips on TF Cessna 182

Im almost ready to cover the plane but before i do im wondering about the horner wing tips. Will they really make much of a differance or not? I prefur not to have them because i can see them gettign broke before i even get offa the bench. Also im powering it with a TT91FS what would be a good prop size for the plane 14X6? im guessing

Thanks
Pat

Default Horner tips on TF Cessna 182

I have the horner tips on my TF Cessna and they aren't any problem. I guess if you are prone to banging the wings around (hanger rash) you might break them but they are used on the scale plane. I really don't know how much difference they make (can't take them off ).

I had an OS 91 4-stroke on mine at first but it was not quite enough power. It flew very scale like but did not have any resurve power during take off from a grass field. I put on a 1.20 and it is now just fine. However, I did have to cut a hole in the cowl for the valve cover.

What is a Cessna 182 w/ all the bells and whistles without horner wing tips.
I don't believe I've ever seen a full scale without them. I have seen full scales with extremely enlarged horner tips though.
Not rippin', just wondering why you would forego the scale tips.

Hi.
In the full scale the horner tips and the washout helps to reduce the induced drag, so the plane can have much less drag at slower speeds. I have a Top-Flite cessna also with the horner tips but I don´t know the difference because haven´t flew any without them.
Besides this they are very beautiful and scale and I love those wing tips (offcourse you would have to be very carefull with the wing).

I do have the robart nose gear. I tend to bang planes around. It seams no matter how careful i try to be im always running them into something so. I just made regular tips and tacked them on and covered them. I will fly it like that for a while then this winter i will make horner tips for it out of something like urathine. Have to say tho man them flaps look GREAT. Now i just have to finish up the fuse.

I elected not to because i built this as a sport scale version, next rebuild i will probably glass and paint! It has been around 5-7 years no major crash damage, those robarts bend unless you make perfect landings though

Robart nose gear bends... how easy? I think it feels pretty stout but now that i think about it it is only a tube. Thank goodness my landings are pretty tame. Also how does the sideways mounted fuel tank workout for everyone good or bad?

Tank is no problem sideways, the robart u strut will bend on any sideways stress at all, the oleo is great but anything less than a perfect landing has the pliers out straightening the gear. Very durable plane though have had no crashes with it so far 7 years!!

I do know that neither the 654 Robostrut or the mains and their mounting blocks hold up very well in a highspeed aborted TO run into a curb :-)
My heavy-arsed bird tip stalled and KO'd a tip on second flight (I wasn't piloting, or it would have been worse). Very superficial damage...I mounted them to break-away easily. I am surpeised that fiberglass aftermarket tips are not readily available...or maybe they are and I am unaware of it. Probably because of shape differences in the wing nuances from builder to builder.

that sure would be easy they make them on the Lancair arf, look real nice too. Going to fly my P-47 if the wind calms down tommorow, been blowing 25-30mph all day

Yeah, I'm just finishing up the Lancair...the tips are nice but don't fit well (at least on mine anyway). I'll be building a rib to fit in the tip and lightly mount that to the wings end. If they get banged they'll pop off easy.

Well so far i have the wing covered and im thinking about taking off the tips and doing up some horner tips for it after all. I did mount one of my aileron servos backword thinking i could use the ailerons as flaparons or spoilerons. That wont work with a y harness that i can figureout. Good thing there mounted to hatches.

Default Flaperons on a Cessna

PatinIdaho,
I am confused about what you are trying to do with your Cessna. Why would you want to program your ailerons as flaperons? The flaps are huge and very effective on the TF model.

I also agree with the previous comments about the horner tips - why build a scale model and not do the tips. As far as breaking them off, mine are fairly strong. Just take a little more care to prevent "hanger rash".

I was tryng to do that with the ailerons for no real reason other then just playing around.Yeah ok im goign to take the other tips back off and make some horner tips for it. Im not trying to get totaly scale tho but i spose it will look better and be something to talk about at the field.

As the kit says Hoerner wing tips were an option on the cessna 182, so the full scale version could be found without them on it! The Hoerner tips were added to help add alittle to some acrobatics. The plane will fly with a reg wingtip quite well! If you build this kit with the flaps, then you can make the tips. They are easy to make! I'm building theplane now and with all the bells and whistles I'm finding that a hatch door for all the switches and charging plugs is a necessity.
