large scale war ships

I might have to unsubscribe this thread. I'm seeing too many things that I like here.
Tim, under no circumstance, would I ever consider shooting ball bearings. Let me correct that. I would NEVER let you shoot ball bearings at my ship!!!

You have to look at this in the proper context.
If you build the ship to the proper specifications,..
We will let you shoot ball bearings at our ships.

1. Two 56 inch destroyers
2. Two 8 foot heavy cruisers

Hello Guys,
I have enjoyed reading thru this forum. If I was closer I would offer to grapple for the sunk ships for you. This is my first attempt to biuld a scratch scale ship. Here are some pictures. It is incomplete and nothing has been painted yet The rear crane is fully operational. Twin 550's on 3:1 gearbox turning 2" 3 blade brass props. 2 Gel Cells in series for 12 volts To much fun. It is tough though as I am torn between my plane and my ship.

From: Center of the Flyover States,
The Last One........a little blurry (got to hold that camera steadier) The museum had a red laser beam guarding the ships that was set to trip an alarm if you tried to touch them. Guess I was a little nervous on this one.

Well there is large, and then there is Large.
If you can't stand shooting at our pretty ships, there is always this sort of large scale modeling.

wow, now that's large scale. I think that's a little out of my league though, I doubt I could get it in my workshop. I keep drooling over a 111" iowa class but I don't have room for that either. Until I get that house scratchbuilt I will have to stoop to building the tiny 52"-72" stuff. LOL.[&o]

Well, it's about 1:45am and soon I will be heading off for the big Toledo show. I'm taking along the camera so anything that applies to this thread I'll post when I get back. Maybe I'll post it even if it doesn't apply. The last time I was down there I saw a carrier that was probably 15' long. VERY IMPRESSIVE!

You guys are doing a good job of luring me to ship building. The pictures you are posting are very impressive.
The ship models Tim and I saw in Toledo were great. Tim should have some nice pictures to post.
The vendors we talked to were also very friendly and informative. I egged Tim into dropping some big $$$ oon accessories for his Narvik.
Jim B, I understand what you are going through. model airplanes and boats are both fascinatng. Do both. That's probably what I will end up doing. Right now, I'm eyeball deep in airplane projects, but I can see a large ship in my future. (Don't tell Tim I said that)

When it comes to my decision on model boats vs mode airplanes.
We run our combat events once a year at a model airplane field, because of the large pond they have. There is typically one unfortunate plane in the garbage can when we arrive on Friday, and we see at least one airplane land in a tree, or pond over the weekend. Most of the time they do not suffer too much damage.
However, my destroyer has been getting shot by ball bearings since 1989. I have only lost two servos to water damage. I was looking at helicopters a few months ago, and had a couple target my pocket book. When I talked to a friend at the local hobby shop, he said, "You always tell me planes crash, your ships just floats there when something goes wrong." I ended up ordering the new "Graupner" Voith Schneider drives instead.
As far as myself and aircraft are concerned, I think that the my ships longevity speaks for itself.

You know when Tom gives me a hard time about being a "boat guy" after my leaving the airplane hobby, I remind him that if his plane hits the ground it's a box of toothpicks, if my boat sinks (which I have never had happen) it's still in one piece and could probably be retrieved.

I cannot argue with the longevity andf the ease of boats. I own a real 26 foot Bayliner so why not have a scale ship in the cabin. Planes are also very subject to weather so I will boat on the over 10mph wind days and fly the rest. And on many occasions, "and dont tell my wife this" I have done both. RC is a great hobby full of great poeple just lookin to have some fun.

Jim,
I couldn't agree more. RC is about having fun. One area is no better than another. All you have to do is find something you enjoy and do it.
With the longevity of your ships, how do you guys find room for the "Next One"? With airplanes, when you crash one, you have just made room for the next!!!

Maybe that's why ya'll shoot 1/4" ball bearings at each other. You just needed room for another project. I do have to agree with Tom though, I've got boats all over my house including a huge 75lb tug boat in the corner of my workshop. I haven't figured out where I'm going to put this destroyer yet but alas, I will find room! Anybody interested in buying some stuff? LOL.

Check out the Scale shipyard.
I am building two of their models at the same time. The First is a 71" Aegis Cruiser, and the Second, my favorite , is the USS Iowa BB61 "modern. The battleship is 9 Feet- four inches long, and will have four turning screws. I am building both models with turning radars, and lights. Operating anchors is an option. With models this large, the amount of scale almost has no limit(real teak deck, hollow-steel barrels, training guns, interior bridge lights, nav and search lights. ) . The battleship can only be launched with two people since the bulk of her, and the fact that she is close to 200 lbs. These are shop fillers too at this size. My project now is to make it shoot rockets(missiles) like the real Iowa.
I will be happy to send pics.
